Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, March 18. 2009Justice for Chessani and Other Haditha MarinesIn a 2006 interview, then- prospective candidate Barack Obama praised our troops in Iraq but when asked whether “Did [Congressman John] Murtha say that in the right way?” his charge that Haditha Marines committed “cold-blooded murder," Obama deferred to Murtha:
One after another, the Haditha Marines have been found not guilty. I’ve written many, many blog posts on the details of each case. I’ve yet to read anywhere, including the leftist blogs, any substantive criticism of the proceedings’ consideration of the facts. Two cases remain open: Platoon leader SSgt Frank Wuterich and Battalion Commander LtCol Jeffrey Chessani. As in the other cases, the politically-propelled zealous prosecution has been handed a series of setbacks to their legal position. The latest is the appeals court upholding of the dismissal of charges against Chessani because of undue command influence. The entire judgment is here. A portion gets down to tacks:
The prosecution can appeal further, up to the US Supreme Court. Otherwise, the prosecution can choose to restart the case from scratch, under new leadership. The same cause of dismissal, for SSgt Wuterich, is expected. These Marines have suffered from a runaway frenzy in prosecution. It’s time it ended. The father of one of the boys in my son’s Little League team is a similarly distinguished LtCol of many years service in the Marine Corps, preparing to assume a vital and very challenging command. Is the message we want to give him and his family that they may face similar ruinous consequences of simply doing their duty? Unlike Obama, I won’t defer to Murtha but to the known honor and courage of my fellow Marines.

Tuesday, March 17. 2009AIGRoger's post here today captures some of the inanity swirling around the AIG situation over the past few days. In my view, the AIG focus is populist, boob-bait scapegoating - along with a (doubtless welcome) chance to trash Wall St. Everybody loves to trash it until they need a loan, want to make an investment, or want to start a business. It's a distraction from the real issues in the economy which pose hard and complicated questions. Tough finance and tough politics. The previous owners of AIG (the shareholders and bond holders - me included, I am sorry to say) have already been thoroughly punished. Like it or not, though, AIG is still one stone in the arch that holds up the superstructure of the global economy, same as Citigroup (same as Lehman was, and we saw how that worked out). Unlike Citi, We The People now own AIG, so it behooves us to run it well in a businesslike fashion unless or until it is broken into parts and sold. Thus of course those folks should get their contractual bonuses. That's how these folks get paid: it's not "extra" for doing a good job. Their salaries are token, and generally quite modest. Not getting your bonus is a finance company's gentle way of saying "Start looking for another job. We don't need you here anymore because you are not adding enough value to our enterprise." If they don't get paid they will leave, and our national "investment" in AIG will go down the toilet. We are getting these guys cheap, too. Our friend Tigerhawk has written one of the clearest and most succinct pieces on the background of the financial mess. Too much easy money from governments too politically timid to sit through economic contractions, too many greedy borrowers, and overly-lax lending. We are headed back in that same direction again. We took an 11.2 trillion dollar hitThat's the evaporation of wealth in the US in 2008 - not including 2009. Some of that was mine - enough to make a difference in my plans and in my comfort level. No, I do not expect markets to only go up, nor do I ever expect to sell our house (which still has a significant mortgage) - but this was a tornado. A fluke. Being no longer a young fellow, I must admit that it causes me some anxiety. We don't have pensions (who does these days, except government employees?). We have 401-Ks. I have no problem with working forever, but I did want some choice about it. I like choices. IBD explains why it matters to everyone. Tigerhawk explains why Lefties should be pleased about wealth destruction. More equality, etc. Tigerhawk can be a bit flip about it, though, because he is a young guy, full of beans and ideas, and clever enough to outsmart Obama's Socialist plans for us.

Thursday, March 12. 2009Do the facts matter at all?A Mr. Free Marketesque wave of a fine cigar to all of the sites that linked with Bruce Kesler's excellent and well-researched post on ObamaCare here. Light one up for the cause of freedom and choice in medical treatment, with our thanks. We do want to get those facts out there because in a DC health care debate we will be the recipients of many self-serving and emotionally-manipulative lies and scare tactics. Our Editor and I have had an email discussion about Kesler's post. Sad to say, we agree that the facts often play a minor role in politics because Lefty politics is all about accumulating State power. Their term is "by all means necessary." Of course, that means removing notions of freedom, free choice, and self-reliance from all of their political equations. It isn't even discussed. Except for abortion (which is arguably a political issue of self-determination but not, of course, for the tiny new life that is snuffed out), have you ever heard a single Dem or Lefty argument for more freedom, more independence, and less State power over the individual person? Or his/her hard-earned money? Here at Maggie's, we tend to believe in the virtues of freedom and self-reliance for most, and the human tragedy of dependency only for those unfortunates who require it. That's the only way to build people with strong spirits. The only "universal" things we want from the Feds are protection from foreign enemies and law-enforcement. (We should note that our blog friend Shrinkwrapped posted a simultaneous and fine piece on the same subject: Preparing for the "Healthcare Reform in the United States" Debate: Beware of GIGO)

Sometimes I speculate about how many jobs, professions, and industries are ultimately parasitic to Business-produced wealth: law, medicine, advertising, academia, the entire investment and finance industry, every "service" industry, all of government...the list goes on and on. That's why any rational government would be thankful to business enterprise, and would try to get out of the way of those who want to produce and create.
