Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, July 5. 2016You can’t avoid the truth, sad as it may be: Trump is the only revolution we’ve got.”When in the course of human events…” Well, we’ve reached that course. Hillary Clinton is corrupt and corrupting of everyone she touches. President Obama has engaged in outrageous executive conduct so often as to be numbing. Those in powerful positions throughout this administration behave like lawless thugs and keep getting away with it. The courts have been packed with judges who find excuses to not enforce the laws or who create ones out of ideology contrary to intent. The major media shamelessly look away or cover up for the lawless and abusers, and seek every opportunity – or blow out of proportion every trivial thing – to damn opponents of the regime. Much of the Republicans in office lack the guts or integrity to fight back, outside of mewing noises. Where does that leave us now? The Tea Party movement occurred at a point in time between elections, and succeeded in electing many who promised to be better. Some have been. Many have been useless or become tools. Now, it is election time, and the demonstration we require is at the ballot box. Donald Trump is far from the perfect leader. But, then it takes someone with gumption and determination who will not be intimidated to take on the rot that permeates our government and self-appointed ruling class. And, Trump is the only revolution we have available. Anyone deserves the end of our once-renowned Republic who stays home or turns coat or otherwise fails to stand up for recovering an America with basic laws and justice, an America which is not beholden to those who would exploit the government for self-aggrandizement or profits, an America with justice for all which does not favor the wealthy or powerful sycophants of state power. Get out and work for local candidates and for Trump. Otherwise, be part of the ruination. It's that simple and brutal a truth. New Canaan, CTWe posted Paul Simon this weekend. He lives in New Canaan, CT which is a slightly-distant NYC suburb. Who else lives there? Keith Richards! Of all people. Those two, plus many other celebs, can be seen pushing their carts through the market in the village with no special attention paid. Connecticut is not Hollywood. Some rich celebs do not care about taxes, and just want a quiet, homey place to live where they can take a town car to the city whenever they want some fun.

Euroland
Euroland has been a slo-mo disaster. After Brexit, Top EU bureaucrat wants a ‘European Government’ Good luck with that. The EU is becoming a backwater, living in the past. Sad. Orban vs the EU - Hungary to Hold Referendum on Migrants in Fall Breaking: To Nobody's Surprise, the FBI Recommends Against Bringing ChargesWe all knew it wasn't going to happen. It's the how it didn't happen that is most unsurprising. "Lack of malicious intent." We all know she's clean as a whistle. Our nation has been unique in that it rarely prosecutes politicians for crimes related to the execution of official duties. There is a good reason for this, since that kind of prosecution can often be driven by political goals and outcomes (a hallmark of banana republics and third world nations). However, in this case, there is a clear dereliction of duty and, in my mind, benign neglect (the best you can say about her behavior) is the same as malicious intent. In fact, benign neglect in any corporate situation can and will get you fired. But government is not a corporate environment. Which is why I hold politicians and government in such low regard. The real problem I have to face here in NYC is the stupidity of her supporters who say "The FBI says she's not guilty." No, they didn't. They just didn't feel the case would derive an outcome worthy of taking it to court, but clearly pointed out that she engaged in plenty of illegal activity. Just not maliciously. I'll remember that next time I decide to not pay my taxes.

Monday, July 4. 2016Damn. Another painful loss this week, this time in Montana
First The Campbell Apartment, and now Pine Butte. The 10,000-acre Pine Butte guest ranch in Montana's Rocky Mtn. foothills has been a favorite remote getaway for the Bird Dog family for many years. It's right on the edge of "the Bob" wilderness and south of Glacier. It is is a Grizzly preserve. Famous Ear Mountain is out the window. My lad even spent a summer doing ranch work there, and got trapped in the outhouse by a bear who presumably did not wish to shit in the woods. Horseback in the mountains, fossil-hunting on the prairie, hiking, bird watching, fishing in the mountain streams and lakes, rib-sticking home cookin, and steaks and campfires and pine logs sizzling in the cabin fireplaces. Also, gallons of Sun Tea. Whiskey and cigars as the sun sets. God's country. Many other such places, but this was what we liked. For huddled Easterners, big sky in June is a dramatic revelation of Creation. There is a fine book, too. Ear Mountain figures prominently in it. I understand why they decided to shut it down to the public. However, trust me, they will keep this special place open for major donors to the Nature Conservancy. I would have loved to take some grandkids there. It is America at its finest and wildest where antelope play, with crazy horses and real cowboys. I love it, but cannot be a Major Donor to The Nature Conservancy. I did not go into Wall St. finance despite several gracious invitations to do so. Had to follow my own path. Sometimes I wonder whether I am oversensitive to loss. Probably I am, somewhat. I do have lots of pictures of that land with us on horses, somewhere.

An American TuneKeeping it simple. I am grilling burgers and vegetables (Sicilian-style) on charcoal. Tater salad from the market because I am lazy. Rhubarb crumble with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Iced tea, beer, wine. I think I have some sparklers in the closet, for the kids. Monday morning links - Happy US Independence Day

Bishop Barron on College Campus “Safe Spaces”Red meat is evil!
So claims the WaPo. It made me laugh because this is America's #1 barbecue weekend and only quite peculiar people are not grilling meat. A few thoughts. If cows and sheep and goats are killing the planet, what about all of the wild animals that roamed the globe before domestication? Should we kill all the farting deer, caribou, bison, wild pigs and Wildebeests? Why do they always talk about Red Meat? What's so specially bad about it compared to pork or chicken? Not a thing, as far as I know. That old beef about red meat's health badness has long been disproven. And how bad can red meat be, given that the human body is made of it? Are the cannibals worried? Anyway, it's all silliness.

How to Quickly Peel a Boiled EggThis is great info. We fitness nuts eat one or two daily, just with a little salt or hot sauce on 'em. An easy wholesome meal if you make 10 at once and put them in the fridge. A hard-boiled egg or two with hot pepper jelly on them is a perfect breakfast after a morning hour of moving heavy weights.
A long-weekend patriotic survey of our readers: What do most Americans do that most other people do not?
It's not the old thing about the Constitution and history and all that. My survey is about what individuals, citizens, do that are far less common in other lands. This survey was stimulated by Z-man's thoughts about citizenship in The Case of the Citizen Truly Stated. He makes good points, but I think the main one is that a nation needs some tribal aspects to function as any sort of unity. To be a nation, there has to be a common Code. I'll start it off: - Americans have bake sales to raise money for their kids' schools - Americans start businesses, fail, and try another one - Americans start charities for people who died of rare diseases and have bike rides and runs to raise money - Americans love to support their high school sports teams just for the fun of it - Americans have millions of clubs and churches, and join them and work at them - Enjoy many firearm sports - Americans are ashamed to receive charity, and ashamed when they do not contribute to their community in positive ways. - Bitch about government constantly What's on your list?

I prefer a crumble with vanilla ice cream to a pie. Re rhubarb, I can munch the raw stalks. Refreshing. My daughter's boy-toy does too, which is just one of many reasons he is a good fellow. Rice Salad, Greek-style, for your summer weekend get-togetherDelicious summer side dish for meat on the barbie, but it can function as a full meal for me if served on top of some Boston Lettuce: A pile of cooked white rice (Basmati is best). Or couscous instead. Cool rice to cool or room temp. Then add: roughly chopped - peeled and seeded - cucumber (you can add some chopped red, green, and/or yellow bell peppers too if you want.) Salt and pepper, fresh-squeezed lemon juice to taste, then toss with your best olive oil. Serve cool or room temp. A sad loss: The Campbell Apartment
By being a hipster-free zone, a quiet, dark, cozy bar filled with sofas where people behave and dress nicely, it had become one of my favorite retreats from the NYC streets. It has been almost like belonging to a fancy NY club, or a real speak-easy down to the gal at the door deciding whether you were appropriate for the place. Cool. I am skeptical that one more trendy bar scene will support the $1 million/year rent on this little place, but who knows? As for me, I avoid the glitzy and the trendy. The Apartment, as it will remain for a final month:

We Wouldn’t Need Affirmative Action...
Indeed, if public K-12 schools worked well, we wouldn't need so many colleges either. Summer Cocktails: Gin Fizz with Dr. Tom More
There's also the Royal Gin Fizz (with an egg), and, of course, the Sloe Gin Fizz if you can find any Sloe Gin around - or any loose Sloes to soak in your gin. Looks like a Beach Plum. Cape Cod Beach Plums would probably work just fine. They are bitter, flavor-packed wild plums. Maybe I will give that a try. Photo is the Royal. nb: Some old comments below from our late pal Marianne Matthews. Miss her.
