Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

This is superb: The History of Political Correctness, with "Cultural Terrorism"All readers should listen to this piece of history, in which a disappointing "proletariat" - which refused revolution - was replaced by a Gramscian program for an intellectual elite-driven neo-Marxism designed to bring down Western civilization to replace it with...whatever...run by them. (For Marcuse, it seems to have been all about random sex with interesting strangers rather than anything economic, which is fine with me but Mrs. B., who I am quite fond of and to whom I am quite attached and comfortable, would never go along with that idea. Therefore I comply with her wishes and am not a sexual revolutionary despite my many and almost continuous adventurous and curious thoughts about all of the charming females one encounters in life. That was the deal I made with her, and keeping my word is important to me. I guess that makes me a reactionary.) A big wave of an old Montecristo and a glass of single malt to Thompson for finding this excellent 20-minute piece:

Calling Dr. FreudDino is trying to understand what makes Obama tick, and he rightly wonders what would cause a 33 year-old to write an autobiography. Dino is looking for clues to the man's underlying personality structure. He is especially puzzled by this recent O quote:
Puzzles me too. It does sound like transparent preaching of the "Do what I say, not what I do" variety. Anyway, I have no interest in trying to analyze the guy's character nor am I qualified to try. I just wonder two things: 1) Where does he smoke in the WH? and 2) How is he going to try to screw me next? A "Tutela valui" tattoo, and other things about the uses of LatinOne quote from the NYT Op-Ed:
All of my kids took Latin in grade school and high school. Good fun, and it has served them well. I took ancient Greek instead, plus French and German. Only fairly fluent in French now. Sorta-kinda. Can still read French or German OK if it's non-technical. Struggle with the Greek but have a feel for it, I think. From today's Lectionary: "Greater love..."John 15: 9-17 9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other. TomatoesI am putting mine in the ground today, after using my car as a greenhouse for a couple of weeks. I have 6 varieties this time. Always those Sweet Million cherry tomatoes, and always the classic Beefsteaks, even though they aren't ready around here until mid-late August. Still worth it for a few weeks of them. Some yellows. No plum tomatoes - the canned are fine with me if they are going to be cooked anyway. Are yours in yet? The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth -- After This Guy's Done With It, No Sooner

Despondex, for the Annoyingly CheerfulFriday, May 15. 2009More farm pron - or is it True Love?Everybody is showing this one, so we might as well too. The old guy is shameless, isn't he? A good thing he prefers elephant-style to missionary style or her riders might be in a heap of trouble. She is a cute lil' thing, if a bit on the heavy side. They both seem to be smiling, and that's what matters.

Cracks in the facadeVDH begins:
Whole thing here. Galloway folliesh/t, Moonbattery The Commons and StewardshipWe have posted many times about the tragedy of the commons here. This handy concept goes far beyond the original meaning. It is the most basic human nature to take care of your own. Unless you have a close, small, closed society with strong affinity and who are on the same page, people will rape the commons for their own purposes. We posted the other day about plans to try to maintain the fisheries. John Stossel discusses Eat the Tigers! Same point. Most people need a sense of ownership to really care about stewardship.

ForecastingQQQ: Another word to the wiseNever put it in writing. Unless you want it on the front page of the newspaper...assuming there is a newspaper any more. Writing includes email. It's a wonder we can even feed ourselvesGrowing new neurons throughout life: Micro mRNA and neurogenesis. Dang brain is quite remarkable. Current advances in neuroscience go under-reported because the press doesn't understand it any better than they understand any science or basic economics. Journalists seem, to me, to be the ultimate "I was told there would be no math" people, who should never have been admitted to any college.
