Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, June 5. 2019QQQFalsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it; so that when Men come to be undeceiv’d, it is too late; the Jest is over, and the Tale has had its Effect. Jonathan Swift (1710) (h/t, AVI) I still prefer Mark Twain's version: "A lie can go halfway around the world before the truth gets its pants on." Our current fitness program for the middle-aged (ie, 40-100 years old)We're talking about general fitness and energy for life during the years of sarcopenia, arthritis, and other various age and accident-related things. Younger people can take on tougher programs but few of them do. - 3 hrs of resistance exercises/wk: weights +/- machines. It's for muscle and bone. - 2 hrs/wk of "cardio." Includes HIIT. Gotta challenge that heart muscle or it will give out on you. Even so, it might anyway unless some cancer kills ya. - 2 hrs/wk of exercise class or your own calisthenics. Classes push you harder. These are for agility, athleticism, cardio, balance, endurance, etc. To make your body do what's it's meant to do. That's a good program, because it permits space to miss a random day without losing a step. A 5-hour hill hike can be a sub for any day. What about sports, yard work, gardening, etc? Unless you are playing a few sets of tennis in the US Open, these sorts of things are why you work to stay fit. Doing ordinary life things are the rewards of fitness, but provide no fitness.

I had the delight of attending a Connecticut Shad Bake on Sunday after a day of trout fishing. My pic above of shad (with lardons) on planks, with a tray of shad roe above. Shad roe is a special food for us. Shad Bakes are done on rough planks over an open wood fire. Some pics of somebody else's Shad Bake. Yes, you nail the filets on the planks. The only seasonings are salt and pepper. Shad are anadromous fish which migrate up rivers to breed in April and the beginning of May. The jolly bake I was invited to attend had Connecticut River shad, expertly-boned (few people know how to filet a Shad) along with whatever sacks of roe that the female Shad contained. Nice outdoor party, in the woods by a large pond. Seemed like I had two degrees of separation from people I met there. Serve it up with beer, cole slaw, potato salad, and strawberry shortcake for dessert. From today's Lectionary: A jail storyActs 16: 16-34 16:16 One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. 16:17 While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation." 16:18 She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. 16:19 But when her owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. 16:20 When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said, "These men are disturbing our city; they are Jews 16:21 and are advocating customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe." 16:22 The crowd joined in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and ordered them to be beaten with rods. 16:23 After they had given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to keep them securely. 16:24 Following these instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 16:25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 16:26 Suddenly there was an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were unfastened. 16:27 When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. 16:28 But Paul shouted in a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here." 16:29 The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. 16:30 Then he brought them outside and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 16:31 They answered, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." 16:32 They spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 16:33 At the same hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire family were baptized without delay. 16:34 He brought them up into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God. Saturday, June 1. 2019Rhubarb TarteA daughter visiting from LA helped me work the garden today, and decided to make a tart for her friend. Crust from scratch, of course. That's a BD family specialty- flakey pie crusts. Rhubarb tarte is amazing, in my opinion. We grow good rhubarb here. I took it from my Mom's rhubarb patch when she died. It is planting time for tropical things like tomatoes and peppers up here in Yankeeland. Everybody likes to get an early jump on the season, but it's never worth the trouble. Annual plants do not get going until late May and June here. On the other hand, from now on it's too late for planting shrubs and trees. Water them all you can for the first growing season, but transplantation stress and hot weather is tough. If they hold their own, next Spring they will grow fine on their own - if they like the spot you selected for them. The great Ralph Snodsmith who had a gardening show on WQXR or somewhere for 100 years always said "Prepare a $50 hole for a $5 plant." With inflation, I'd say a $300 hole for a $30 plant. Loosen up the roots of a potted plant, or chop them up a bit if the new plant is root-bound. After that, the hole is the thing. Double the diameter of the shrub or tree. A firm base, and fill with enhanced dirt (peat moss, planter soil, manure, whatever). I mix it all up for fill in a wheelbarrow to give the thing an easy start. Then soaker water plentifully the first year. Why? Because the plant doesn't have a sustainable root system yet, and to make it easier to send out new roots. Dry or compacted soil doesn't have the water space between soil particles in which to send new roots. We planted a bunch of hollies this Spring. Actually, two batches. They are looking good thus far.
Is it a government's job to make us happy?Should Government Produce Happiness? If governments know how to do that, I am all in as long as it does not involve distribution of soma. Maybe governments do know something, because they seem to know how to make themselves happy. Mostly, government seems to annoy and burden me, though.
