Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, January 1. 2019Muscle agingHow Muscles Age, and How Exercise Can Slow It. Researchers untangle the multifarious nature of muscle aging. So far, the only reliable treatment is exercise. As we have often pointed out, resistance exercise addresses bone aging too. Re comment, unfortunately it is orthopedic surgeons who deal with joint problems.
A nutritional comment on yesterday's strength postThree one-hour-long sessions of heavy weight-moving (ie to the max you can perform 3-8 reps, or, in other words, 60-70% of one's one-rep max) definitely demands extra daily protein in a nutrition program. Probably extra food in general to repair and grow muscle. We would not recommend more than three days/week of heavy for any ordinary people. Women are different than men, though, whether pre- or post-menopausal. Very few women spend 3 hrs/week on heavy weights (I only know one who does. I do weights twice weekly. I focus on calisthenics for my sports.). Heavy weight work for an osteopenia or osteoporosis diagnosis is a good idea. Twice weekly fighting gravity hard ought to suffice. Not to worry, gals. You will never become unattractively bulky. For guys who want to focus on strength and muscle development for a while, 3 heavy hours works at any age. Progress is just slower with age. At Maggie's, we like to balance cardio, calisthenics, and resistance to maximize vigor, general life, and recreational activities. Readers know that calisthenics, hand weights, and cardio demand no special attention to protein intake. That is, just normal eating unless you want fat loss.

It doesn't take long to get the daily predictability: Bad things: Orange Man, the economy, guns, White Supremacists (where do they find those?), the climate crisis, Putin, Russia Russia Russia, oil companies, border security, the obsolete US Constitution, people who won't recycle Good things: The UN, Nancy Pelosi, The SPLC, any LGBT movement, illegal immigrants, government regulations, Pocohontas, Romney (they suddenly love him), anybody who feels oppressed or offended. And recycling is the highest form of virtue. They have pretty good taste in music, though.

Those all-white canvases pretty much were the dead end. Or maybe Pop Art. However, thousands of people still make compelling and appealing pictures that people want to decorate their homes. Besides that, painting itself remains a highly-popular hobby because it is difficult, semi-relaxing, you have total control for once in your life, and there is always room for improvement. What about the modernist abstractionists like Pollock? Decorative to some people, definitely investments and status symbols. Could I tell a real Pollock from a Rockwell Pollock? Nope. I think Rockwell did a fine Pollock.
5X5 strength For example, I've spent the past 3 months emphasizing my cardio endurance (while doing heavy wts only twice a week). I've seen some improvement in my running and stair machine work, but far from enough to reach my goals. Darn it, I get tired! I'd like my 25 year-old body back... Anyway, time for a change so I will add a third weights day to replace one of my calisthenics/athleticism classes. I hate to do that because the classes are great fun and damn stressful, but I can switch back in 3 or 4 months. What do I mean by "weights days"? Barbell or goblet squats, deads, dumbell rows or seated rows, bench. I can't do overhead presses due to a bum shoulder (which needs replacement but I don't want to go through the down time). Also, I do accessory efforts like curls, press-downs, pullups, dips, kettlebell lunges. Because of time constraints (1 hr/day usually) I tend to do 3 sets of the accessories, and 5 sets of the basics. I usually do 50 jump ropes between sets as part of 90-second recovery. Don't ask me why. For those who want to spend a few months emphasizing strength and power-building, a 5X5 program is known to be effective. Anyway, for a few months my program will be 3 days of weights, 1 calis/cardio class, 1 day higher intensity and HIIT cardio, one day with 1/2 hr calis and 1/2 hr HIIT cardio, and one day "endurance" long slower cardio (just jogging as long as I can) as a "recovery" day. Doing the same things all the time is not the most effective plan. How do our readers keep their fitness programs changing?

How people try to find replacements for religionFrom today's Lectionary: Lost childLuke 2:41-52 2:41 Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. 2:42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. 2:43 When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. 2:44 Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. 2:45 When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. 2:46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 2:47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 2:48 When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety." 2:49 He said to them, "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house? 2:50 But they did not understand what he said to them. 2:51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. Higher ed tests were introduced to foster a meritocracy in admissions. As it happens (with the SAT, for example) the test is essentially an IQ test. IQ is one measure of a person's intellectual potential, but is it "merit"? Would a college want a very high IQ lazy guy or gal with lousy grades? Yes, they might - and might guess right. And what about people showing great promise in one area, but no interest or energy in others? Elite schools used to want the "well-rounded" kid (academically solid if not brilliant, athletic, good social skills, etc). Anyway, nowadays there are so many colleges desperate for paying butts on seats that there is opportunity for everybody to show what they bring to the table. I am continually seeing words which are difficult to define. Merit is one, happiness is another. There are more on my list... Jerash
