Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I bailed when the First World narrator, whose uncallused hands surely ooze First-Worldness, intoned "...This is the age of darkness."

Well, where did he think recycled steel came from?

What's that logo in the corner? Is it CBS or a guy standing with his hands on the top of his head, in utter horror?

The only thing missing is a better narrator, one who can make his voice throb a little bit more with compassionate irony, maybe even interject a little weeping.

Turned if off after about 5 minutes, no doubt I missed the part about the majestic endangered sand crabs whose habitat has been ruined by the evil (but once proud) oily hulks driven onto the beach by capitalist greed.

And then let's cut to the starving homeless puppies threatened by....let's see, is it still global warming? Let's make it poverty-stricken homeless puppies starving-while-freezing in Russia - because of Capitalist Oligarchs who stole the election. That oughta do it. Here's a number to call where a throbbing voice is standing by to take your call and your money.

Entirely true, but remember that this is coming from the National Film Board of Canada, where the histrionics are always in a lower key.

Decades ago, it seems, National Geographic had an article on the Pakis breaking up ships. It was very dangerous work, but it was very interesting.

feeble - I remember the same thing. They do this in Bangladesh and some of the countries in Africa, too Actually kind of a step down for the Indians.

Read a couple of months back of layoffs at the ship-breaking places after companies bought too many ships, based on China's need for more millions rebars for construction. The market for rebars dropped dramatically, and subsequent heart-wrenching stories blamed coming hunger of workers and families on China.
