Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sign of good luck. I recently planted a few Cleomes in the garden, partly to attract those moths. I have only seen them at twilight, but it's said they are around in daytime too. Flash BoysJust finishing Michael Lewis' Flash Boys, a terrific history of high frequency trading, front-running and markets in general. It reads like a thriller. You'd expect a Wall Street drama to be all about ego, bad guys ripping people off, and money being 'stolen'. Certainly that all plays a role, but it's not central to the story. One of the best parts is the side story of Serge Aleynikov, one of the few people arrested, tried, and imprisoned after the crash in 2008. What's truly sad is that he had little to no involvement in any of the events leading up to that, nor was he involved in any transaction coding or theft of any kind (though Goldman Sachs and the US Government said otherwise). It's a sad state of affairs when someone capable of 'fixing' the problems that lead to flash crashes and other tech-driven market impairments is listed as a 'bad guy'. At any rate, he lost his money, his family, his reputation - but eventually won his case and was freed. He has a great quote: “If the incarceration experience doesn’t break your spirit, it changes you in a way that you lose many fears. You begin to realize that your life is not ruled by your ego and ambition and that it can end at any time. So why worry? You learn that just like on the street, there is life in prison, and random people get there based on the jeopardy of the system. The prisons are filled by people who crossed the law, as well as by those who were incidentally and circumstantially picked and crushed by somebody else’s agenda. On the other hand, as a vivid benefit, you become very much independent of material property and learn to appreciate very simple pleasures in life such as the sunlight and morning breeze.”~Serge Aleynikov Carentan1944Besides everything else interesting about Ambrose's Band of Brothers is the explanations of how much detailed planning went into the invasion.

Our current fitness program for the middle-aged (ie, 40-100 years old)We're talking about general fitness and energy for life during the years of sarcopenia, arthritis, and other various age and accident-related things. Younger people can take on tougher programs but few of them do. - 3 hrs of resistance exercises/wk: weights +/- machines. It's for muscle and bone. - 2 hrs/wk of "cardio." Includes HIIT. Gotta challenge that heart muscle or it will give out on you. Even so, it might anyway unless some cancer kills ya. - 2 hrs/wk of exercise class or your own calisthenics. Classes push you harder. These are for agility, athleticism, cardio, balance, endurance, etc. To make your body do what's it's meant to do. That's a good program, because it permits space to miss a random day without losing a step. A 5-hour hill hike can be a sub for any day. What about sports, yard work, gardening, etc? Unless you are playing a few sets of tennis in the US Open, these sorts of things are why you work to stay fit. Doing ordinary life things are the rewards of fitness, but provide no fitness.

To save the planet, never go anywhereIn my deeply considered view, all of the global whatever you call it is either virtue signalling or power politics. It's all bullsh-t. If one more person tells me "I recycle for the planet" I will just laugh. And maybe ask them what they are doing for other planets.

I had the delight of attending a Connecticut Shad Bake on Sunday after a day of trout fishing. My pic above of shad (with lardons) on planks, with a tray of shad roe above. Shad roe is a special food for us. Shad Bakes are done on rough planks over an open wood fire. Some pics of somebody else's Shad Bake. Yes, you nail the filets on the planks. The only seasonings are salt and pepper. Shad are anadromous fish which migrate up rivers to breed in April and the beginning of May. The jolly bake I was invited to attend had Connecticut River shad, expertly-boned (few people know how to filet a Shad) along with whatever sacks of roe that the female Shad contained. Nice outdoor party, in the woods by a large pond. Seemed like I had two degrees of separation from people I met there. Serve it up with beer, cole slaw, potato salad, and strawberry shortcake for dessert.
