We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
In my deeply considered view, all of the global whatever you call it is either virtue signalling or power politics. It's all bullsh-t. If one more person tells me "I recycle for the planet" I will just laugh. And maybe ask them what they are doing for other planets.
It is inevitable that when you separate the good stuff from the bad stuff so you can reuse the good stuff, you will be left with a pile of concentrated bad stuff. Hence at one point, something like 12 of the 20 most polluted Superfund sites were former recycling facilities.

I know that no one will believe this, but the use of crude oil can easily be reduced by 50%. Cars don't need to get 20 miles to the gallon. With modern technology, they can easily get 50 miles to the gallon. The reason that cars get such poor fuel economy is that the Mob owns the energy business. Yes, the Mob. Most people think that the Mafia is a mythical organization; or like "The Sopranos" it's just a bunch of good guys.
The mafia, in reality, is huge organization with branches all over the world. And they really do kill people. The Mob make a fortune in the gasoline business; and they plan to make another fortune in the carbon trading business. So it's not an issue of reducing our "carbon footprint." It's an issue of getting rid of the Mob. But that won't be easy, because they own almost everyone.
Let me give you an example. In Louisville, KY there is a health care company called "Humana." This company makes a fortune by selling drugs and services at a 100% to 500% mark-up. The cash flows are huge, and there is no inventory. It's a perfect Mob business. That's why the company is impossible to audit. In Louisville, about two miles from the Humana building, is a large F.B.I. headquarters. So if the F.B.I. decided to audit Humana's books, the would simply show up with a warrant. And do you know what would happen? There would be a single phone call from Washington; and the F.B.I. would be told to go home.
That's the Mob. The cancer is Washington is a lot deeper than you think.
Lots of assertion here, but no evidence. Your argument is equivalent to the joke about the elephants hiding in the bags of M&M's. Never saw them? That's because they hide so well.
Assistant Village Idiot
Humana is a public corporation. The requirements for their openness about their income and assets are quite strict and it is all available to the public just as any publicly traded stock requires. They compete with other companies and if they were making 500% profit the competition would increase. There is a vast difference between what you think is going on and reality.
Hmm, my dad was in the international oil business. Wasn't a member of the mob as far as I know. One thing, though, the oil business was very anti-Semitic back then, but that was partly because of who you had to deal with. Back then (in the days of the Shah) we were getting a lot of our oil from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Indonesia. A bunch of those folks refused to deal with Jews. I know in my Dad's firm one of his fellow execs had to go to an oil meeting in Iran. He was Catholic, but had a Jewish sounding last name. He actually had to get a letter from his bishop vouching that he was a Catholic in good standing, in order to get his visa or other papers. Back then entities like Aramco and OPEC were all-powerful. My Dad didn't have to make those trips, although he did go to Indonesia a couple of times. In Indonesia you had to be nice to the generals who ran everything. He actually said the general he worked with most was a nice guy, and he liked him. Most of his business was done in New York.
Jim, you completely underestimate the Mob. People think of them as a bunch of thugs. They are; but they're educated thugs. The Mob deals in politics, philosophy, law, religion, metaphysics, everything. That organization is a thousand years old.
By the way, I'll tell you something. My Dad grew up in Israel, and when he was young he went to work for the Shah's Anglo-Iranian oil company. At that time, bring Jewish wasn't a problem. And it wouldn't be a problem today, except for the fact that Israel makes all the Arab countries look bad. If the price of oil dropped by 50%, they would all be in deep doo doo. They know who the boss is.
Biden, Gore, and the other clowns who claim to want a greener world while diminishing carbon dioxide were probably goofing off in class when photosynthesis was explained. They certainly missed the part explaining how that carbon atom found its way into the chlorophyll molecule.
I recycle and here's why: the town where i live charges $2.50 per barrel (you have to purchase stickers that are affixed to the trash bag in the barrel) which they come around to empty once a week. The town also picks up the recycling once a week, but for no charge to me. So, everything I can possibly put (hide) in the recycling bin reduces the amount of trash we have to put out. I'm down to a trash barrel every other week, or less. Doesn't save me a ton of money but, as my mother used to say, 20 nickels make a dollar.
Most of us recycle but most recycled garbage simply makes it to the landfill OR worse the government spends a small fortune of your tax money to subsidize recyleing it. Even worse they spend a lot of energy to turn useless paper and cardboard into cheap and almost useless recycled product. Recycling is mostly a myth.
