Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Hummingbird Moths, and D-Day

It is said that the D-Day armada witnessed a swarm of Hummingbird Moths (aka Hummingbird Hawk Moths) over the English Channel. Sign of good luck.


I recently planted a few Cleomes in the garden, partly to attract those moths. 


I have only seen them at twilight, but it's said they are around in daytime too.

If you want to attract hummingbird moths then plant an abelia shrub. That's where I see them (and the real hummingbirds) in my garden.

We have lots of them here on the Gulf Coast, or at least something that looks just like them. They seem to like all the same flowers as hummingbirds do, anything tubular. They never come to the feeders, though. I have not really noticed a day/night pattern.

They like Four O'Clocks too. And tomato plants are a host for their larva, as long as you aren't growing tomatoes... the lovely hawk moths come from the despised Tomato Horn Worm
