Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, September 10. 2008Attribution Error, Freud, and Peter GayWe somehow lost the original of this post, with its comments. Sorry - If I see you run through a stop sign once, my tendency - or bias - is to assume that you are a jerk who does things like that all the time.

LipstickWeds. linksThe witch-trial hysteria of the past two incendiary weeks unfortunately reveals a disturbing trend in the Democratic Party, which has worsened over the past decade. Democrats are quick to attack the religiosity of Republicans, but Democratic ideology itself seems to have become a secular substitute religion. Since when did Democrats become so judgmental and intolerant? Mrs. Palin is mobilizing women of all sorts. Good on her. We are all sick of the unattractive feminazi academic lesbians. Takes 3-4 hrs of activity/day to fight your fat genes. Chop some wood. Clean the house. Peel some potatoes. Carry that load. Mow the lawn. Turn off the TV. Turn off the internet (except for Maggie's Farm). Weed the garden. Carry some rocks. Go to Costco. Tip some cows. Shoot a caribou. Carbon is a lost cause. Sure is. The coming global cooling crisis. Lehman is screwed. I feel badly for the long-time Lehman guys who thought they were wealthy. A great American company which, I assume, did not listen to their risk managers. Obama dies on O'Reilly. He really cannot give a straight answer, only lawyerly evasions. But his people can do the dozens (that's a ghetto expression). Steyn on the world wanting Obama. Funny. Certainly PM Brown's endorsement will not carry much water in the US. We do not want to be like today's UK. Europe is in a death-spiral. What about all those "green jobs"? People in government couldn't run a profitable candy store. Obama's big contribution to education? Sex ed for kindergartners. That is perverted, sick. It's the big education debate. I happen to want the feds entirely out of education. "Oh, I wish I'd looked after me tits." Bush revealed as Lincoln and Grant. Someday the nation will appreciate Bush. Obama unplugged. Herald

More fun with VanderleunVanderleun's American Digest is one of our favorite and most-admired websites. Thus sibling rivalry drives us to try to make him insane, permanently if possible. He apparently is neither a fan of the outer Cape nor of the t-shirt, kite, and beach towel stores along Route 6 - which is his loss. This t-shirt image might do the job, for good (sorry, it's soiled from farm chores and kinda stinky):

Escaping the Malthusian trapHow do societies do it, and how come some don't? The Culture of Prosperity Tuesday, September 9. 2008Too much good stuff todayIt's just this simple! Now go vote! Independents moving to McCain. Duh. Even Jules now alarmed about global cooling. T. Boone Pickens cares only about one thing. Jeremiah Wright has a new scandal. Skirt-chasing. I thought he was offensive enough before this. Africans pay the price for greenie moonbattery Gaffe Central: My Muslim Faith. Sheesh. It's sad. Obama now is for Charter schools. With a wink to the unions? I do not believe this. Sarah on the basketball court. Shoots and scores. Now they say Obama is running against Palin. Weird. Two on one, since Biden is a joke (somebody forgot to tell Obama). Sipp on politics: All politics is the prayer for a deus ex machina. Yes, always. Do not look to those jokers for your life's salvation. Mankind will never be ready for democracy, or dictatorship either. Dems have no respect for regular Americans. That is true. I am a regular American, neither elite nor a victim, and not interested in being either. I guess that makes me a Repub. Michelle's boot camp for radical propaganda. Shades of Stalin and Mao. Rejecting Obama for the right reasons. That's me. I'd vote for a black Conservative without any hesitation. Poll: Lefties against the Constitution. Horrifying...but somehow not surprising either. It's OK, Oprah. No, really! It's OK! Got to add that site to our blogroll.

Sociology of FootballOver the transom: Planning for the fall football season in the South is radically different from up North. For those who are planning a football trip south, here are some helpful hints.
Women's Accessories: NORTH: Chap Stick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket. SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, waterproof mascara, and a fifth of bourbon. Money not necessary - that's what dates are for.
Stadium Size: NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people. SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
Fathers: NORTH: Expect their daughters to understand Sylvia Plath. SOUTH: Expect their daughters to understand pass interference.
Campus Decor: NORTH: Statues of founding fathers. SOUTH: Statues of Heisman trophy winners. Continue reading "Sociology of Football"

"What happened?"StatistsShould libertarians fear the Dem nominee? asks Chapman at Reason. He begins:
Read the whole thing. Of course, Repubs are only marginally better because people in government tend to become enamored of - and dependent upon - the power. To vote as a statist, you must believe in the supreme wisdom of the State and its (our) employees. Few Americans believe that. In the end, the dividing line is between those who trust in the power and wisdom of The State vs. those who have faith in the wisdom and potential of the individual. I happen to think that The State is an ass, and foolish when it is not self-interested. No Pasaran has a bit on Statism. These are the things folks need to be considering in these elections. Americans are ambivalent about government. More from Chapman: This election season, both the left and right promise big government.A 4-Star Deer standTuesday linksUS mulls Google lawsuit Command and control? From Outside the Beltway:

Monday, September 8. 2008Hating SarahRemember when feminism was concerned with overcoming artificial and essentially irrational “glass ceilings” in employment and other activities? Well, with time and legislation, those areas are pretty well fixed – as the positions of Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, Carly Fiorina, Sally Krawcheck, etc., etc. have demonstrated. What now for the Departments of Feminist Studies at universities all over our country? Unemployment? Hardly. The feminist movement has morphed into the Feminist Party, and it has An Agenda. Gwynnie spoke to a Feminist Chair at a big university this weekend and got an education. Suggesting that Sarah’s nomination might have appeal to what we thought were feminists (shattering another ceiling, inspirational to young girls, etc.), we were bowled over by the furious attack – turns out that Sarah is hated by the “Feminist” Party. We asked the professor what the “Feminists” regard as their major issues, and it turns out that they are:
We had guessed that abortion would be a criteria for admission to the “Feminist” elite, but gun control? Creationism? It’s sort of sad that as real feminism has almost blown away the glass ceilings, “Feminists” would dilute themselves into becoming merely liberals with skirts (or pantsuits). This whole week has been educational. The following letter was written by a Bryn Mawr graduate in Continue reading "Hating Sarah"

Monday linksThe Feds should have privatized Fanny and Freddie, not taken them over. Running the mortgage market is not part of the government's job according to the Constitution. One day later, now the auto biz asks for Fed support. It's a slippery slope if failing businesses can run to the Feds (eg our wallets). Scientists get death threats re Hadron Collider VW Microbus to return? Flower decals and peace symbols optional. Biden: Life begins at conception What's up with Andrew Sullivan and Obama? Kristol: "McCain didn’t just pick a politician who could appeal to Wal-Mart Moms. He picked a Wal-Mart Mom." It's refreshing. I tire of these elites who always are certain that they know what's best for me. Related: Tammy on Palin (via Insty), a quote:

Aviation QQQsIf you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger, if you pull the stick back they get smaller. Flying is not dangerous; crashing is dangerous. If something hasn't broken on your helicopter, it's about to. I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers. Flying at night is the same as flying in the day, except you can't see. I had a fighter pilot’s breakfast - two aspirin, a cup of coffee and a puke. The three best things in life are a good landing, a good orgasm, and a good shit. A night carrier landing is one of the few opportunities to experience all three at the same time. Lots more here. Pomo Libs reject "the other"Well, so much for diversity and appreciating and embracing "the other." I think that thing only applies when "the other" is pathetic or damaged in some way, or manages to wiggle their way into some victim class. Or perhaps some pomo reader, if we have one, could help me distinguish between the "good other" and the "bad other." It sure doesn't apply when "the other" is a regular American woman, albeit one with unusual energy and coping skills. Nick Cohen on When Obama's berserkers lost the plot. (h/t, Lucianne). One quote:
Some animals are more other than others. Addendum: Apparently those folks at the Guardian also view people like me as "the other" - and as a primitive, apeish ignorant "other" for whom they hold contempt. They have clearly never met me. I'm an Ivy guy, and I wear ties and like guns. Call me a knuckle-dragging redneck if you want to. Story at Jules. Addendum: From our commenter "People on the left are breaking the teeth of reason on the irrefutable fact of Sarah Palin--the other--as they gnash the grinders in their dismay. They have attacked her strength and accomplishments with sexism; they have belittled her origins with classism; and they have mocked her beliefs, leaving only the shell of their multiculturalism. Thus the lie of identity politics and multiculturalism lay in ruins." Addendum: The Palin Problem. Rick Moran. One quote:
Photo is our refined, sophisticated, Euro-sensitive, metrosexual editor Bird Dog. Just your typical American voter... The Messiah visits The DonThe TempestWent to see a preview of the new production of The Tempest at the Classic Stage Company on E. 13th st. in NYC yesterday, with the great Mandy Patinkin. We like the 41 year-old CSC so much that we have become supporters, and it's always good to see Mandy. However much presence he has, he had a little trouble bringing the sorcerer Prospero to life, in my humble opinion. Ariel is perfect.
Here's the firehouse down the street. My crappy camera cannot pick up that the image painted on the door is a flaming WTC with an eagle, or that the banner above welcomes a member of the station home from his tour in Afghanistan. Way past time for a new mini-camera.

Sunday, September 7. 2008Good stuffHad some of this last weekend. Tastiest wine I've had in quite a while, and excellent for the price - but I am not good with wine jargon. Oregon's Willamette Valley Vineyards Whole Cluster Pinot, 2007. Too young to drink? That's a matter of taste. I am old enough to drink and that's what counts. Sunday linksThe latest McCain video ad. Not bad. The Palin book-banning lies. Lies of all sorts are swirling around her. Throw enough sh-t at the wall and hope some sticks. That's the approach. Grasso's compensation and the courts. Prof B Palin rises above the shrill media What does a "community organizer" do? Why Ayers matters. Neoneo Raul, Cuba, and the internet What's all this about speeches? Althouse All the gals now want the Palin look Two small(?)-town Dems wonder whether local Repubs care about small towns The UN wants me to have meatless Fridays? I guess it's a new religion. I have plenty of meatless days, but not to be good - just because I like other stuff too. Good news on the free speech front. Coyote Death from above in Afghanistan Are we watching the end of boomer wierdness? Are all of the photo-shopped Palin photos ethical? Probably not, unless identified as such. The Dems' hidden Soros slush fund A visit to Palin's church. The Pastor is from NJ. Extremist claims Palin is an extremist. Compared to Boxer, probably so. Roger Simon with general thoughts about the election and the culture of narcissism How McCain is running as the candidate of an unpopular president's party. Barone Palin did it. Surber. She's the one we've been waiting for! Krauthammer disagrees, but everybody's allowed to be wrong once in a while. Meanwhile, Palinomania is spreading overseas! Good for them. What's the matter with Connecticut? Will Wilkinson directed us to a piece of poli-sci research titled Rich State, Poor State, Red State, Blue state. What's the matter with Connecticut? They are asking why wealthier states tend to vote Dem, and vice versa. In wealthy states (CT is the wealthiest in the US), income has no correlation with voting patterns. An interesting piece of work.
Absolutes? Yea or Nay?Fun with metaphysics. It's always easy to forget that "no absolutes" is an absolute itself. Dr. Bob. Eastern Front Artifacts
