Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, September 8. 2008Hating SarahRemember when feminism was concerned with overcoming artificial and essentially irrational “glass ceilings” in employment and other activities? Well, with time and legislation, those areas are pretty well fixed – as the positions of Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton, Carly Fiorina, Sally Krawcheck, etc., etc. have demonstrated. What now for the Departments of Feminist Studies at universities all over our country? Unemployment? Hardly. The feminist movement has morphed into the Feminist Party, and it has An Agenda. Gwynnie spoke to a Feminist Chair at a big university this weekend and got an education. Suggesting that Sarah’s nomination might have appeal to what we thought were feminists (shattering another ceiling, inspirational to young girls, etc.), we were bowled over by the furious attack – turns out that Sarah is hated by the “Feminist” Party. We asked the professor what the “Feminists” regard as their major issues, and it turns out that they are:
We had guessed that abortion would be a criteria for admission to the “Feminist” elite, but gun control? Creationism? It’s sort of sad that as real feminism has almost blown away the glass ceilings, “Feminists” would dilute themselves into becoming merely liberals with skirts (or pantsuits). This whole week has been educational. The following letter was written by a Bryn Mawr graduate in Dear classmates - As an Alaskan, I am writing to give all of you some information on Sarah Palin, Senator McCain's choice for VP. As an The most accurate description of her is red neck. Her husband works in the oil fields of She has been a strong supporter of increased use of fossil fuels, yet the McCain campaign has the nerve to say she has "green" policies. The only thing green about Sarah Palin is her lack of experience. She has consistently supported drilling in ANWR, use of coal-burning power plants (as I write this, a new coal plant is being built in her home town of Prior to her one year as governor of These people don't have a concept of the world around them or of the serious issues facing the Sarah Palin is currently involved in a political corruption scandal. She fired an individual in law enforcement here because she didn't like how he treated one of her relatives during a divorce. The man's performance and ability weren't considered; it was a totally personal firing and is currently under investigation. While the issue isn't close to the scandal of Ted Steven's corruption, it shows that Palin isn't "squeaky clean" and causes me to think there may be more issues that could come to light. Clearly McCain doesn't care. When you line Palin up with Biden, the comparison would be laughable if it weren't so serious. Sarah Palin knows nothing of economics (admittedly a weak area for McCain), or of international affairs, knows nothing of national government, Social Security, unemployment, health care systems - you name it. The idea of her meeting with heads of foreign governments around the world truly frightens me. In an increasingly dangerous world, with the economy in shambles in the John McCain is not a young man. Should something happen to him such that the vice president had to step in, it would destroy our country and possibly the world to have someone as inexperienced and inappropriate as
To those of you who, like me, supported Hillary and were upset that she did not get the nomination, please don't think that Sarah Palin is a worthy substitute. If you supported Hillary, regardless of what you think the media and the Democratic party may have done to undermine her campaign, the person to support now is Obama, not Sarah Palin. To those of you who are independent or undecided, don't let the choice of Palin sway you in favor of McCain. Choosing her shows how unqualified McCain is to be president. To those of you who are conservative, I guess you have no choice for president. But please try to see how the poor choice of Palin tells us a great deal about McCain's judgment. While the political posturing inherent in the choice of Palin is obvious, the more serious issue is the fact that the VP is, literally, a heartbeat away from the presidency. Sarah Palin is totally and unequivocally unqualified to be vice president, let alone president. I know this is a lengthy and emotional email, but the stakes are high. I thought it might help for all of you, regardless of political affiliation, to know something about Palin from someone who has to live with her administration in Jackie S. Then a friend sent us a fishing guide’s description of Sarah. Take your pick:

Feminism was never just about women...it was just a branch of the liberal/socialist movement to rebuild society in their image.Whenever a woman achieves in a way that doesn't conform to their revolutionary template (Thatcher) they try to denigrate and destroy.
Dude's close an italic tag. Maybe in the entry posted just before this.
Is calling people red necks racist?
I usually take it as a compliment. An Alaskan would not refer to 'snow mobiles,' but 'snow machines.' It is a silly, simple thing, but it seems the author is being less than honest when claiming to be an Alaskan then using terminology that is simply not used there.
Loved Butch King's letter. Really disliked the Bryn Mawr lady's careless, libelous harangue.
I've been thinking of writing an open letter to the 1960s so-called "feminist" types, including such worthies as Steinem, Sally Quinn, Maureen Dowd, and other holier-than-thou effete, elite liberal women, who pride themselves on their innate superiority and have behaved so wretchedly toward Sarah Palin, a woman who lives up so completely to the feminist principles they themselves fail to achieve. Thank God I went into the working world in the 1950s, and became an editor and writer without their much touted "help." Back then I found the men of the business world much more open minded toward women's capabilities than today's feminists would have you believe. In the final analysis, success in anything is all about the fierce will of the individual to do his or her best, make the best effort he or she can give. Sarah Palin personifies that. It's instantly recognizable. And instantly feared and hated by those who don't have it and can't give it. As lawyer Joseph Welch said to Joe McCarthy during his infamous Communist hearings, "Have you no shame, sir, have you no shame?" Marianne Everyone used to take their cue from the Arts & Humanities feminists. Now that there are Business feminists, Science and Technology feminists, and other sub-groups, they no longer take orders from the top. Those women decided, quite rightly, that they were competent and need answer neither to men nor women.
Ever notice how the feminists look more like hockey players than hockey moms?
I'm still trying to figure whats wrong with:
"So long as they can go out and hunt their moose every fall, kill wolves and bears and drive their snow mobiles and ATVs through every corner of the wilderness, they're happy. I wish I were exaggerating" as a way of life. Seems much more fun than agonizing over the fate of Quemoy and Matsu. Dear Mr. Moffett,
The population of California would take years to drive "through every corner of the wilderness". I suggest that you quit reading the Sierra Club magazine in your urban cocoon and go someplace where you can walks for a week and never see a sign of human intrusion. I, have - for years. You don't have to go to Alaska to do that. You can find those places all over the country. Regards, Roy I see that expressing incomprehension over distaste of an admirable life style is best appreciated over viennas, a half case or two and dip in my double wide urban cocoon. Sierra Club? Is that the new dance place over on the Walker County Line?
Dear Mr. Moffett,
I was responding to your contention that Alaskans had invaded every nook and cranny of the wilderness. That is a sentiment that I've only ever heard expressed in urban areas. People who have lived near to or in the vast wilderness areas of this country view statements like that as what? - tinfoil hat stuff. That is not a reflection on you, sir. Just tellin ya what other folks think. Regards, Roy Roy,
With all due respect. I think you may be misinterpreting Mr Moffett's original comment. I believe, know really, that he was quoting from the letter above written by the Bryn Mawr graduate. His comment was in respect to that. Dear Mr. Moffett and Mr. McLeod,
Mea culpa. My apologies. Open mouth, insert foot - then think. Regards, Roy

No problem, Roy. I enjoy your contributions too much to let a little misunderstanding get in the way of friends. Which, here, we mostly all are, in one fashion or another. And please, Luther works very well.

Dear Luther,
This is one of the most comfortable, civil places in all webdom. I look forward forward to talking to you and Mr Moffet on many issues. I hope I am not being too forward in my closing. Love, Roy

Well, Roy, I was being colloquial in my use of the term friends. As there are many differences of opinion to be found here at MF, opinions oftentimes debated quite fiercely. Quite the normal 'family' with common interests in other words.

Dear Luther,
To me that is not colloquial. Some of my fiercest enemies have become lifelong friends. I guess it comes from playing hockey for 40 years. You know - have a guy knock you ass over teakettle then have a couple of beers with him after the game. Regards, Roy Seig heil orthodoxy! Palin dares be female and redneck. rednecks must be killled! Once the Fourth Reich is fully in control, those rednecks and jews will be destroyed, media permitting. seig heil katie couric! Dear Teresa,
