Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, January 7. 2007Supermodels in my Maserati SyndromeYou know about PEBD, right? (h/t, Jules C):
Whole heart-breaking article here. I think we need a Federal program to help these people. Teams of counselors and social workers, ready to go at a moment's notice. Maybe involve FEMA, too.

If you marry her/them, is it bigamy?Definitely unusual - but life is strange. Here. Piece at Ace. Ace, predictably, wondered about their future sex life, but we wondered about motor control. Whose brain does the walking? It seems to me that the one on the right just kinda goes along for the ride. Anyway, the whole thing is fascinating, and they are remarkable in their "normalcy."

Secular TotalitarianismA clever reader coined the term "evangelical atheists" the other day. Yesterday, an opinion piece by Tobias Jones in The Guardian on "secular totalitarianism." A quote:
Right. Whole thing here. That is why Statists hate religion: it competes in significance. Why else would they care so much - or even care at all? Science is generally and properly humble about its offerings (the global warming scam excepted), but The State is never humble. Buzzing blooming confusionA new bio of the remarkable, irrepressible William James is out. Quote from review in the Boston Globe:
The whole thing is here. Image: Henry and brother William (on right) James. Two brothers could hardly be more different in temperament. Henry was "an old lady," and William a wild and crazy, drug-abusing, skirt-chasing dude.

A Sunday Hymn: In the Bleak MidwinterWe do not really have a bleak one here, this year, with Palm Trees sprouting up in Yankee-land, and dinosaurs returning to latitudes in which they have not been seen for many years, but I love this song: In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Angels and archangels may have gathered there, What can I give Him, poor as I am? Christina Rossetti wrote these memorable lines. The music is perfect, too. The music Midi file here. Saturday, January 6. 2007Huntin' Tomorrow LinksNeed to be up and out early tomorrow. Grouse out there in the swamps, wanting to play games with us. So here are a few goodies for tonite. (Am I not a reliable reporter? Especially considering the pay?) Star Trek withdrawal. Basil suffers from this endemic disease. I have it, too, but my insurance doesn't cover the treatment. Guess what? In England, they have a deal we do not have. Worstall. And one more, too: Sex at 16 yes, but no smoking afterwards. Don't mess with my church. Ham at TownHall. Thanks, Instap. Like Sinn Fein? My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy does not. Me neither. Low-life thugs, with a political scam. Like Jesse Jackson with bombs. John Edwards' Con Game. Gay Patriot. Just another tax-dodging limo liberal, who never made an honest buck since he got out of school. The mystery of capital. This deserves a separate post - but everything we post does. Read it. Who do ya love?I guess this is a guy question: Laura Ingraham or Monica Crowley? Laura seems more my type - a Yankee gal, a Dartmouth gal, and less intense than Monica. But I do love listening to Monica on Saturday afternoon on 770 from NYC. Here's one of my favorite Laura (post-cancer surgery) photos, which captures her spirit if not her loveliness:
and here's a toothsome Monica photo:
Who ever said you can't be in love with more than one person at once? That person had no imagination whatsoever. Probably a Calvinist party-pooper. I love them both, in different ways, I think. And, as a brand-new but closet Mormon, I'd be happy to take 'em both on, and their incomes would help quite a bit with the new gun budget. Yes, that Serbu looks good: a guy has to protect what belongs to him. Support the TroopsWith pin-up calendars for hospitalized vets. (h/t, Iowahawk) This healthy-lookin gal Gina has really nice hats. And what could be more health-promoting than cute girls? You can buy one for yourself too, if you want one - but it's not tax-deductible. If you go there, tell 'em Dave from Iowahawk sent ya. Dave deserves the credit.

Denver vs. New Orleans
Not football - self reliance. Denver wins. Conspiracy. Denver experiences weather events "of Biblical proportions." Residents laugh at idea of federal help: they would never ask. We can see cultural differences at work here.
Saturday LinksIt's been so warm in New England this past month that the plant in the photo just popped up in my front yard. Is it some kind of giant daffodil or something? I missed this. Bush and Steve Bridges at the 2006 White House Correspondent's Dinner. Cute. Bill Bennet's Proposed 2008 Platform (h/t Cons Grapevine) The Gummern Storks. WaPo. We wish them well. When all else fails, lower your standards. LaShawn New Orleans: as dumb and inept as ever. WaPo. Do they want Bush to send them another big hurricane? Why we say Thank God when good things happen. Auster makes a good point. Jews taking over the moon! Hot Air. Americans see both Doom and Good Cheer. Huh? Patriot Post explains it. Barney Frank is either a low-life liar, or insane. Wizbang. The former, I think. He's just trying to reinforce the theme that it's about Bush, not Nagin and that feckless governor. The deflection of responsbility has been stunningly successful. See our piece inspired by Scrappleface. What would happen in the Middle East if they moved Israel to New Mexico? A Thought Experiment, at TCS Andrew Cuomo, newly-elected Attorney General of NY, to open new offices of Social Justice and Economic Justice. Huh? Watch out, New York. Atlas. We need a post on this commie jerk. Adult stem cells can grow new teeth. Just in time for me! Alpha. My amalgam-to-enamel ratio is already too high for my age. "It's for the children, so they never have to grow up." Dr. Sanity. Exactly right. We, the government, will take care of you infantile, helpless morons. Use skin creams? Raven says "Don't." Don't waste your money on Noka chocolate, reports Synthstuff. It's cheap stuff, re-packaged. Is this OK with you? Social Security for illegals. Ankle Biting

Saturday Verse: Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) Arms and the Boy Let the boy try along this bayonet-blade How cold steel is, and keen with hunger of blood; Blue with all malice, like a madman's flash; And thinly drawn with famishing for flesh. Lend him to stroke these blind, blunt bullet-heads Which long to muzzle in the hearts of lads. Or give him cartridges of fine zinc teeth, Sharp with the sharpness of grief and death. For his teeth seem for laughing round an apple. There lurk no claws behind his fingers supple; And God will grow no talons at his heels, Nor antlers through the thickness of his curls. ' Owen, the realistic poet of WW1, was a good pal of Siegfried Sassoon, and was killed in action one week before the armistice.
Friday, January 5. 2007Darwin and GodShamefully, furtively, guiltily stolen in full from YARGB:
There is no conflict, and the whole Dawkins thing is silly. From what I've heard, scientists are just as religious, or non-religious, as the rest of the population. Science and religion exist in entirely different spheres of experience.

CloisterThinking about Tuscany today. This is the Franciscan cloister of Santa Croce, in Firenze, taken last year. Who is entombed in the basilica? Among others, Michelangelo, Galileo, Enrico Fermi, and Machiavelli. A true Hall of Fame.

Lou Dobbs' Demagoguery
A letter on trade and the economy to Lou Dobbs, via the CSM. (thanks, BL). Sometimes one wonders whether we just want scapegoats to focus on - or do Americans simply feel entitled to live entirely free of money worries?
Thursday Morning LinksHeather MacDonald "depressed" by number of God-fearin' folk in the US. I like Heather, but what a silly thing to be concerned about. Good piece. View from the Right The Town of Amherst, MA is in cahoots with Iran. Didn't realize Amherst was that batty, but they are a college town...Viking. What's the principle here? Any enemy of the US is our friend? Where does that leave Amherst? "Are we too good to kill our enemies?" wonders SISU. Or too lame? Mercy for the guilty is cruelty to the innocent. What has happened to libraries these days? We agree with Never Yet Melted that it is "ruination." They aren't supposed to be a business, are they?

Back to Duke?
Lacrosse players invited to return to Duke. Flares. If I were those guys, I wouldn't go back, after the treatment they put up with. Instead, I would welcome the chance to publicly tell Duke and their moonbat faculty to "shove it."
I want to become illegalSeen this one yet? The Honorable Paul S. Sarbanes Wednesday Morning LinksPhoto on right of the new temporary Principal of my kids' grammar school. George Bernard Shaw was a Fabian. So are most of our modern Dems. True love? A beautiful thing. Wizbang. Obviously, the problem was taking the "obey" part out. NYS doesn't want you to own this kind of shirt. Moonbattery Do high taxes deter working? No sh-t, Shakespeare. Stumbling. Fact is, if you make the really big bucks, you don't care about taxes all that much. With the medium bucks, you're inclined to say "What the heck - why bother busting my ass?" Or, like most tradespeople around here, you insist on cash. Assistant Village Idiot read Charles Mann's new Indian book. He liked a lot of it, but the PC parts clearly rankled. Where's Waldo? The real truth about Jamil Hussein. We already reported here that we sighted him Christmas shopping in the Springfield, MA mall on the Thursday before Christmas, but he disappeared into the Gap dressing room before we could get photo proof. Whither blogs? Media, or newsletters? Flares is skeptical about the value of Pajamas Media. Is it anything more than "Glenn Reynolds and friends?" I am skeptical about the value of blogs in general, except as hobbies - unless they keep the MSM on their toes. On the other hand, what but a blog could link Chequerboard's collection of Glenn Gould YouTubes? What do women want? Freud couldn't figure out it, but Raven can tell you. What's your political rating? I got a 36, which makes me moderate, in my view.

Tuesday LinksWhat day is it? Back to normal life today, and back to work like our hard-working little truck. Holiday Season is done, except for putting the ornaments away, paying the bills, and losing the weight. A relief, and a sadness. Anyway, we hate New Years celebrations - they mean nothing at all. Well, an excuse to get together I guess, which is great. The cow flatulence crisis. We have been on this crisis for over a year, and it continues to concern us deeply at Maggie's Farm, but we don't know what to do about it, except Beano. UN - Please help us! Sideline the GOP. That's the Dem plan. I am not sure that it is a winning plan. The new new short political shelf life. Newsmax Dave Barry's Year-end review. (h/t, Protein) The history of the game of Monopoly. Cool capitalism. It was banned in the Soviet Union. The End of England, Part 76: The end of the pint? WTF? Gay and Right. "European Conformity"? Time to rebel. The End of France, Part 753: "French" "youths" torch cars, to celebrate a New Year of car torching. Want to keep Free Speech? Don't look to our Congress. Captain Ed Can there be peace?
