Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, February 22. 2006Newspaper: "Dump the Jihadists"An "alternative" Ann Arbor, MI newspaper, The True Voice of the People, issued a front page editorial yesterday entitled "Dump The Jihadists." The centrist-Marxist newspaper, which is influential among liberal-arts students and faculty at the University of Michigan, stunned this academic town with its revolutionary strategic u-turn, along with a kind of cultural insensitivity normally reserved only for Christians, employers, landlords, car dealerships, Capitalist Pigs, Republicans, Walmart, the NRA, FOX News, the military, guys who play sports, beer-drinkers, non-vegans, housewives, cops, whites, and Israel. This was their editorial yesterday, which we fearlessly reprint: Dump the Jihadists It is time for us in The Movement to reconsider our support for Jihad. I know that this editorial will rankle many of our readers who seek World Peace and Justice, but let's try to be rational for a minute. Extreme Islam is opposed to women's rights. They jail and hang gays. They hate blacks. They kill Jews. They have absolutely zero class consciousness. They are so religious Marx would cry, and we cannot wean them off Mohammed and onto Marxism-Leninism. They treat criminals worse than our fascist USA or fascist France or fascist China. Their Sharia Law is in total contradiction to what we aspire to. They have an unsavory, oil-based, capitalistic tendency which is abominable. They are as multiculturally enlightened as a rattlesnake. And "Green"? They don't know from green. Let's be honest with ourselves. We only love the Jihadists because they are anti-US and anti-West, and because of our wish to see Bush damaged. And for no other reasons. It's our nihilistic, adventurous streak which causes us to glamorize these people, but they are not heroic Lenins or Stalins or Fidels or Maos. Our emotion derives purely from the old "The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend." But where would these Jihadists take us? We'd be the first to lose our heads in a nation run by them. These people are exposing themselves to be semi-civilized religious fanatics, and they would carry us in the wrong direction - not towards the Revolution we all seek, but towards the Theocratic Fascism we have valiantly fought for so many generations. We hereby pronounce the Jihadists to be Counter-Revolutionaries. We did not come to this weighty decision lightly, but our Editorial Board concludes that it's time the Left said "Dump the Jihadists. " It's time for us to move forward towards better, saner, and more progressive allies, like Chavez and Fidel and Sanders and Hillary. If we do not eliminate Jihad, The People's Revolution will never have a chance in the world. Yes, we all wish to see the US humiliated and weakened in the world, but let's not forget why: our goal is to advance the People's Revolution. And Bourgeois Freedom is the only medium in which we can effectively work for our goal. A successful Jihad could set Our Cause back 1000 years, as it is doing in Europe right now. Politics makes strange bedfellows. We might not like the demonic Bushitler, but it's time for the Left to get on board with the so-called "War on Terror" for the moment, tactically, or our dream of Universal Justice, provided by a Benevolent State, could have no future at all. It's time to be smart, and not blinded by our anger. (And yes, this is satire.) Tuesday, February 21. 2006"Selling Out Moderate Islam"Best, most sober, and thoughtful piece I have seen lately about Islam's clash - not so much with Western Civilization, but with modernity. Covers everything from the cartoons to Moslem men's relationships to women to war. Gerecht in The Weekly Standard:
Read the whole thing. Religion and LiberalismFrom a piece by McClay at First Things, on Columbia's Religion and Liberalism Conference (H/T, MassRight):
Read entire. Our Scaredy-cat PressA re-posting from Monday: Our Chickensh-t Press: If our Leftist press portrays Cheney as the devil incarnate, how come they aren't afraid of him? And if the Jihadists are just misunderstood peaceful folk, how come they are so afraid of them? The press is supposedly giving the Jihadists a pass on the cartoons, etc, because of "sensitivity"!!! Huh? The press isn't sensitive to anyone except Hillary Clinton. "Sensitivity" is just a euphemism for "scared." They are pure chickensh-t. Captain Ed gives them hell, here. Monday, February 20. 2006Steyn Speaks Out...AgainI hate to say it, but, when it comes to Gonzo writing, Mark Steyn has it all over the late-lamented Hunter Thompson. I still swear that I will renew my New York Times subscription if they hire Steyn:
Read the entire, pointed, hilarious piece: Cheering Tidbits Tuesday, February 14. 2006Bush Hasn't Plowed my Driveway YetThirty-six hours since the Snow Storm of the Century has passed, and still Bush hasn't plowed my driveway. Nor have I heard from FEMA, nor has anyone offered me any free money or free luxury hotel rooms in NYC. This is difficult for me to comprehend, and it surely represents a failure of leadership at the top. Bush had at least four days advance notice to prepare for this snow disaster, and yet - nothing. If I didn't have my 4 WD Lexus, I couldn't get out of the house. And not only that, there is Deep Slush in the village, which presents a serious health hazard to the Aged and Infirm. Does Bush care about the Aged and Infirm? Obviously not. Us regular people are left to Fend for Ourselves without government aid, while the wealthy and privileged loll in the sun in the Caribbean and Cabo and wait for the snow to melt. Or they have the funds to pay someone to plow their driveway or, like The Barrister, are fortunate enough to own their own beautiful snowplow, as posted on Saturday. Photo of The Barrister's freshly-plowed driveway below. Meanwhile, the rest of us wait for Bush to bring help. Who's taking care of me? Who is in charge at the White House?
Continue reading "Bush Hasn't Plowed my Driveway Yet" Monday, February 13. 2006"Fixing the Founding"Auster has written a stimulating piece on the Founding and the Constitution, noting the extent to which the Founders were preoccupied with procedure rather than with the implicit, small "c" constitution - the civilization - which the government was designed to serve. Was that wisdom, or did they take the nature and character of the nation for granted? I don't know, but Auster has added his own paragraph to the Constitution:
"Traditional and politically incorrect?" Certainly. Very interesting and provocative and highly debatable piece. Friday, February 10. 2006Misprision of Treason, and the New York Times
The Dishonor RollMichelle lists the nations and newspapers who have already submitted to Islamic bullying, demonstrating their terminal lack of healthy pride and self-respect. Captain Ed has some good comments. And Bruce does a great job with moral equivalence. Some people waste no time in bending over, do they? You have to wonder whether they like to, and what their problem is. No doubt there is great laughter in Muslim-land that some fake cartoons, some trumped-up emotion, and a couple of rent-a-riots can have such an effect on the world. This kind of event only reinforces their idea that the Caliphate is on its way, and more easily than they might have imagined. If you scroll down a bit at Michelle, see the cover of a Polish magazine this week - very relevant. Testosterone Deficiency DisorderWestern Civilization males are widely afflicted with this debilitating disorder. The cause is unknown, but some theorize that it is caused by the "Hen Flu," which shrivels up the testosterone-producing cells in the testes, along with the tubules which carry the hormone to the blood. Active research is going on in Australia, because this presumably viral ailment has not arrived there as of yet, making the study of uninfected males easier. However, it is unfortunately endemic in European, American, and Canadian males, and is transmitted, we believe but cannot confirm, by an unfirm handshake and a tendency to smile too much. It appears to be male-specific. Many of the symptoms are behavioral rather than physical, suggesting that the virus attacks areas of the brain as well as the testes. Typical behavioral symptoms include reflexive submission to aggression, eagerness to please, lack of pride, quick abandonment of familial heritage and ideals, a fear of firearms, absence of normal male drooling over attractive females, absence of normal male patriotism, and a deterioration of the instinct to defend family and compatriots. All can be summed up by the Omega Male Syndrome. Typical physical symptoms include occasional cold-like symptoms, the occasional cough, and fatigue, especially late at night and after drinking sessions. The only two reliable tests for this disorder, until the viral antibodies are further identified, are the Drool Test and the Adrenaline Response Test. In the former, test subjects respond to scantily-clad strippers, while measuring devices record saliva production, hardness of privates, and tendency to touch and sexually harrass. In the latter, test subjects are handed a military M16 while target images are passed by the target range. The number of holes in the Islamo-Fascist Jihadist image seem to be a reliable measure of the progress of the disease. The only known cure is to read Maggie's Farm daily. Multi-million dollar studies by the CDC are ongoing to determine the mechanism of this therapeutic effect. The CDC is hopeful that these studies will further our understanding of brain-body interactions. Thursday, February 9. 2006You Will Not Believe This

The new censorship crazeA Plea for censorship from the EU: Daily Pundit A plea for self-censorship from Slate. I knew this was coming. H/T Protein Wisdom. The article is worried about "stereotyping". Gimme a break. Since when is sterotyping illegal or unconstitutional? We all do it, all day long. It's called "learning" from experience. What is wrong with these idiots? They are stereotyping themselves to the point of self-satire. And this comes after discovering that the entire Mohammed cartoon thing was a scam by sleazebag Imams to rile up their people against Denmark. Thank God the leaders of the US are not omega male metrosexuals like Europe has. Like Blair. See also our piece on "Dont MaKe 'em Mad" - scroll down. A Huge Opportunity for the LeftIf they can tell us how do deal with Iran. We are all ears. Hello? Hello? Aw shucks. They hung up. I guess it's easier take shots at what others do, than to propose ideas. Why the Coretta King Funeral Fiasco?
How can you keep selling victimhood when the country is full of black Republican candidates? Despite the Democratic-produced stereotype of poor, single-mother, victimized blacks, American has a rapidly-growing population of middle class, church-going, solid and ambitious black families. Why would they stick with a political party which demeans them and uses them? They won't. Lynn Swann is just one of many. This guy can run. And will win. Aspiring blacks and hispanics are part of the future of the Republican Party - if it will stand for its principles...which it has not been doing recently, for lack of a good orator. This great photo yesterday - not from the funeral. Wednesday, February 8. 2006The Cartoon ScamThe entire Cartoon War was staged by radical Imam-provocateurs. So it appears. But how many ignorant Moslems, without the internet, in the Middle East will ever learn that piece of the story? Makes CNN look like even bigger buffoons that we already thought they were. One of the con-artist frauds here. The cartoons here. Even Dershowitz gets it, but the press doesn't. Update: Wretchard summarizes all of the key events and issues here. Press Racism and Double StandardsNews Junkie had it right yesterday afternoon. Gwynnie has been in the pet hospital for a couple of days and hasn’t been keeping up on her blogging, but is astounded not to have read (yet) that this is D-Day, le moment criticale, the time for the media to choose what is important to them: freedom of the press and objective news coverage, or their hatred of Western Civilization and their goal of the destruction of a president. Bravo to those French and German editors who understand and value their freedoms. To the pit with CNN and the other British and American editors who chose not to re-publish cartoons that were newsworthy only for their very vapidness. And as a side issue, isn’t anyone commenting on the fact that it took well paid organizers with thousands of carefully printed Danish flags FIVE MONTHS to get this fire to burn? Why don’t we have some lynchings and burnings the next time Christianity is slandered? Why didn’t we blow up the Because, gentlemen, we hold ourselves to an elevated form of behavior called “civilized”. Gwynnie has said this before: the media do not hold brown peoples to civilized forms of behavior BECAUSE THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT BROWN PEOPLES ARE CAPABLE OF CIVILIZED BEHAVIOR. THIS IS THE HEART OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE RACIST! We have finally come to the great moment when this is all laid out before us. The choice was clear and it was narrow. The media front-paged their hypocrisy and racism. All the great religions deserve our respect, and all the major religions deserve equal treatment. Image below of our brave press, boldly Speaking Truth to Power When it isn't Scary, thanks to Cox and Forkum:
To Our Brit Cousins: Where are your balls???
Who is speaking for Britain? Is anyone home? Don't let Maggie's Farm give up on you as our proud Homeland! Where is that Anglo-Saxon-Norman spirit? I do not think that we American cousins are planning to rescue you this time. You are on your own...hot-cross buns. I love 'em. And we love you folks - don't give it away. You have a precious heritage. Tuesday, February 7. 2006Don't Make 'Em Mad: A reply to Sam Donaldson, Jack Straw, and other dhimmis
First, worrying about making someone angry as a principle for limiting speech and publishing is absurd. There are always some group of folks who will get angry about something or other. For instance, I get furious when I read the New York Times, yet they continue daily publication, (for the present, anyway). Some people are really pissed off at this and other blogs. Too bad. Are we all supposed to burn buildings to get some sympathy and consideration, and to stop people from pissing us off? Succumbing to people's emotions, especially irrational anger and irrational hatred, is not only cowardly - it makes the very idea of free speech a joke. (And, by the way, don't we all remember Donaldson worrying, years ago, about saying anything to make the Soviets mad? It's a submissive reflex in the guy - probably married to a dominatrix.) Secondly, I believe in decent, mannerly, and tasteful behavior. Those are important values of civilization. But I reserve the right to speak and write whatever I want, even if someone thinks it's tasteless or unmannerly. Sometimes it's just fun. Third, I see a coming risk of self-censorship to avoid trouble with Islam, leading the West further down the road to censoring unpleasant truths. PC baloney already rules in many areas of life, witness Larry Summer's intimidation by a handful of hysterical, hypersensitive females at Harvard. If a bright, full-grown guy can be intimidated by that, how intimidated would he be by a bunch of Jihadists? He'd give them the whole dang school in a second, along with honorary doctorates in Jihad Studies! Fourth, I believe that the so-called "rage" is really an effort to intimidate and silence the world, freeing the Jihad to continue their relentless pursuit of the Caliphate wherever and whenever they have the chance. (They aren't truly angry - they are having an old-fashioned "Hate Party," like the KKK used to have.) Filling Europe with unassimilated Moslems was a good start. Shutting down criticism and satire is a next phase. Wiping Israel off the map is next. It's A Dhimmi WorldMap via Michelle. Should have linked it but just had to post it. The grey color is the (thus far) vast area of dhimmitude. This is not the end of this kind of business. Just the beginning. Note the Brits in the dhimmi column.
Monday, February 6. 2006Help Wanted: A shout-out to the blogosphereWe are looking for a special person with latent blogging tendencies, perspicacity, wisdom, a go-for-the-jugular attitude, a legalistic bent, a mind for detail, a sense of humor, and a moderate, balanced, centrist view of the world to produce a new blog to monitor the New York Times. We are fortunate to have Patterico calling the La-la-land Times on their bias and baloney, and Squaring the Boston Globe keeps a watch on that wholly-owned organ of the loony Left. But, remarkably, thus far no-one has taken on the job of holding the arrogant, condescending, and paleo-leftist Gray Lady to task, leaving many bloggers the task of doing so, on a part-time and occasional basis. Is anyone out there up for this enjoyable job, which could lead to fame and fortune, babes or guys or whatever you like, a new Maserati in the driveway, free beers, social popularity, and doubtless countless appearances on the Sean Hannity radio show and on O'Reilly? If serious about taking on this adventure in a diligent manner, email us. Maggy's Farm will be happy to set you up with your own blog, and cover your start-up costs and twelve month's operation, and more if necessary. Our prosperous Gwynnie agreed to pay for that. The only unpleasant part of the job entails reading the darn NYT daily while remaining calm and not blowing a gasket. (Yes, the Washington Post is next on the agenda. But First Things First.) The New-Age Blitzkrieg: Intimidate the Politically-Correct WeeniesMark Steyn, as always, nails it in his piece titled Sensitivity can have brutal consequences:
Straw hailed them not for their manners, but for their timidity. In brave England? The England of Churchill? Are Straw and Blair our modern-day "better red than dead" weenies? Read Steyn's entire piece - especially our readers in Europe. You have been fore-warned, as the Jihadists say, which is all they need to do to get murder off of their consciences, apparently, according to their rules. Awake yet, Europe, our friends and cousins? Or still asleep? Warrantless Search of Our Underpants
And it is about time to bring the NYT and the WaPo up on espionage charges. Do it now. These folks are dangerous, and endangering all of us - and themselves - to try to sell newspapers that no-one wants to read anyway. Whose side are they on in this war? And how come I could go to jail for twenty years for this, while they can do whatever they want to sell their papers? If they have some special exempt privilege, then why not me, as a blogger? They ain't any better than me. Is the Administration afraid of them? Better be afraid of me: I vote too, and we get 100s of thousands of hits per month. Something tells me that these newspapers either want a Caliphate which advocates wife-beating and the hanging of gays and policed speech, or are blinded by hostile, psychotic partisanship. (I hope the latter, but why won't they just admit that they are Leftist propagandists, and quit the pretense? I'd be fine with that.) Nice green underwear from Lands End. The Constitution is not a suicide pact and free speech does not extend to the revelation of defense secrets or threats of violence. What color of clean underwear do you want to be wearing when the Jihadists nuke Dubuque and London and Copenhagen and Oslo and Munich and Rome? Sunday, February 5. 2006The Boston Globe Caught Again with Pants DownPredictable but appalling hypocrisy from the Boston Globe, neatly presented by Volokh. Offense to Moslems is apparently qualitatively different from offense to Christians, probably because many Christians are uncomfortable with abortion, family-oriented, and conservative in temperament, while Islam is surely the true Religion of Peace as the news proves daily (plus Christians are tame, and don't make a big fuss). The subject was not missed by the ever-vigilant Squaring the Boston Globe. The only reason to look at these papers is to identify their most recent hypocrisies, logical fallacies, and propaganda. Good sport, now that hunting season has ended. This is reminiscent of the NYT's recent advocacy of the filibuster, while having presented many editorials in the past urging its elimination. How unprincipled, opportunistic, and reflexively anti-US culture can these newspapers be? Talk about offensive! Who wants to pay money for such abuse of our intelligence? Saturday, February 4. 2006Sticks and Stones: The Cartoon Story
Our opinion is that people, in the "free world," have and should have the freedom to mock, criticize, and satirize anyone and anything: Christians, Jews, Moslems, Hindus, Indians, atheists, whites, blacks, hispanics, Poles, Norwegians, and every other human category. All are fair game. We do not particularly enjoy it when such things are done in rude, crude or socially unacceptible ways, but that's just too bad: hypersensitivity is the problem of the hypersensitive and, as they say in AA, "Feelings aren't facts." Besides humor, expressions of anger and hate need to be permitted. When Julian Bond terms all Republicans "Nazis," some folks just laugh, some are upset, and some are deeply disturbed. But freedom means freedom to be a dumb jerk, and to express hate, however loony or untrue. Thankfully, we have the freedom to talk back and to satirize such malignant idiocy, and to expose them as wacko fools, as has been done with the KKK. We've been known to get a little juvenile on these pages, ourselves, with the occasional TR ("therapeutic rant"), etc. I thought that Piss Christ was hideously offensive, and a childish effort to get attention by being "controversial". I find the Moslem newspapers' anti-semitic cartoons equally offensive. Were those Danish cartoons offensive? Only mildly so, if you have a chip on your shoulder and are looking for a fight and have no sense of humor. "Orchestrated tantrums," in the words of Gates of Vienna. But words and pictures are not action. Sticks and stones... Free speech means we all have to be willing to be offended, rightly or wrongly. The Moslem world clearly does not widely share that ideal, and exists in a different, quasi-medieval culture with entirely different ideals and rules: a theocratic, autocratic culture in which wife-beating is normal practice, in which hanging is an acceptable punishment for gays, beheading the punishment for adultery, and the word of the Prophet, however interpreted, is the Law. Nor do they make the sharp distinction between speech and action that we do, and neither did Jesus. They are not on the same page that we are on: we left it 400 years ago with The Enlightenment. No-one enjoys having their world-view changed: it entails both a loss, and an unclear future. There are plenty of Americans who, even now, resent the effects of the Enlightenment, regardless of how much we are the beneficiaries of it. The Moslem Middle-East, it seems to me, is in the position of resisting our Western Enlightenment. All of our ideals - political freedom, democracy, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, hedonism - are felt to be a threat to a long-established world view. What surely makes it feel worse is that these ideas are imports - not home-grown. However, the outside Western influence will prove irresistable in time - just see all of those satellite dishes on the tops of apartment buildings in Tehran. TV, the Internet, and the shrinking world will sooner or later, for better or worse, change the culture of the Middle East. They are experiencing a reaction, similar to our historical Inquisition and Counter-Reformation. But to understand the European Counter-Reformation is not to excuse it. And to understand the cultural threat felt in the Middle East by Western ideas does not to excuse barbaric behavior. Should we respect other cultures? I see no reason why we should. Respect, like trust, is a precious gift and not a casual commodity. Should we be interested in understanding other cultures? Sure, if we are curious, but just understanding our own is the work of a lifetime or two. Should we tolerate intolerance expressed in destructive action? Of course not. Should we stand for the freedom to say dumb and cruel things? Sure. Should we speak against dumb and cruel statements? Of course. Should Image on top from yesterday's "protest" in London. Is such a threat of violence covered under freedom of speech? Lawyers know the answer to that. Thursday, February 2. 2006When is Espionage not Espionage?
