Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Friday, August 30. 2019Workouts: Do 10 days off make a difference?Definitely, at least for me. It was instantly noticeable when I got back to the gym, even though my break had almost daily 3-hour hikes, water play, and other activty. Most noticeable were my deadlifts and bench press. Just more evidence of "use it or lose it", especially over 40. Just image the effect of years without workouts. It's kinda depressing, but I got back to my daily routines.

Photo: Our porch. No screens, no bugs. Just a constant cool sea breeze. Cut my driving time to our place on Cape Cod by an hour with my new fun car. A sporty but not excessive 280 hp with turbo, but I've never had a car that could cruise comfortably in the left lane at 85- 90 mph or which wants you to accelerate into corners and curves instead of braking. I have been cheap/practical with vehicles all of my life until now. This car has the tightest steering I could imagine, and zero roll on curves. Sheesh, kinda fun, a bit of adrenaline. Only thing I could figger out on the sound system thus far was the Sirius Grateful Dead station. That is something ok for driving. Never a big Dead fan but I got the gist of it. Still not a big fan, but I sort-of appreciate their relaxed stoner approach. No CD players in new cars, which is a great annoyance. A few thoughts about Wellfleet, on Cape Cod, below the fold.

The Swamp Lover - An excerpt from Thoreau’s May 1862 article “Walking” From today's LectionaryPsalm 103:1-8 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits-- 103:3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 103:4 who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 103:5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. 103:6 The LORD works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed. 103:7 He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. 103:8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Thursday, August 22. 2019These are the days of the endless summer, the time is nowWednesday, August 21. 2019Elvis' first recordingA popular late-summer vegetable dish around hereSimple as pie. Roughly chop up a few cloves of garlic. Roughly chop up an onion. Throw them in a big pan with plenty of olive oil for a few minutes on medium heat. Chop up an eggplant into about 1" square chunks - skin on. Also, a couple of zucchinis and yellow summer squashes to about 1" chunks. Before the garlic and onions brown, throw in the vegetable chunks with a cup of water, stir it up a little, throw in some salt and plenty of ground pepper, and cover the pot. No tomato - it messes up the subtle flavors. Then get some sprigs of thyme, oregano, and basil from the garden and throw them on top, and let it slow simmer and steam on low medium for a while, covered. Gently stir it around a little. As soon as the veggies begin turn soft but before they fall apart, take off the stove. Throw a handful of fresh-chopped parsley on top before serving. Even vegophobes like it. A beautiful worldThe life portrayed at Salt Water New England usually looks too perfect to be real. She hangs out in the nicest places.

Monday, August 19. 2019Blue-State Smokin'At this very moment. Chunks of Black Cherry wood from the woodpile, with a pot of water in there. Short and regular pork ribs rubbed with brown sugar, various ground peppers, dried mustard and Kosher salt. Also a pork butt or two. Let me know whether the smell of the smoke comes through your computer screen. It smells good. If you cannot smell it, maybe your computer's smoke-blocker blocks it. How do you do this enjoyable task?
Sunday, August 18. 2019Best driving music? From today's LectionaryLuke 12:49-56 12:49 "I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 12:50 I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! 12:51 Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! 12:52 From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; 12:53 they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." 12:54 He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain'; and so it happens. 12:55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. 12:56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? Could be Mrs. and Mrs. BD
