Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

This entire "Amazon Fires" hysteria was clearly timed with the G-7 meeting in mind to - once again - milk the U.S. for money. Apparently it worked.
"Sorry, Bernie: America's Poorest Are Richer Than 60 Percent of Developed Countries"
He has a plan for that. We'll be down there with the rest of the developed countries in no time! That MRI article reads like battlefield prep for socialized medicine. CT/MRI imaging caught my kidney cancer, and led to successful spinal surgery, ending years of pain.
Darwin's Doubt.
The story is a stretch. You can see evolution we even practice it. Evolution isn't in doubt or arguable. But think through the implications of "intelligent" design. "Intelligent" as in evolved to a high degree of intelligence. Or maybe it just happened one day when thousands of atoms clustered together. Oh wait! THAT is what they are trying to tell us cannot happen. That life is too complex to self generate and evolve so it had to be created by someone/thing vastly more complex and evolved who simply "made it all appear" on a long weekend or something. This is the level of irrational thinking that is necessary to refute evolution which we can see right before our eyes every day. Why? To save and revive the superstition that is religion. To take back and retain the power over people and lives that has been religion's dictate since before recorded history. What a load of irrational, dated baloney. You hate religion, that is obvious, but you are the one without supportive information.
Congratulations on being the first person to ever 'see' evolution. There will be many neo-Darwinists knocking on your door, because they've yet to find any direct evidence of it. Of course that evolution, according to Darwin himself, has to occur over a very long period of time, has also been disproven by you. Of course, I'm just probably not as evolved as an evolutionary self-practitioner such as yourself. You're probably completely different now to when you made this post. Evolution?
Meh. Chihuahuas, dachshunds, mastiffs, Great Danes and St. Bernards all came from the same root stock. We've managed to breed 'em all in less than a thousand years. Give a few hundred thousand years, things change. Give a few hundred million years - and you go from the Burgess Shales to the era of various dinosaurs to humanity. Evolution? Guided evolution? Chance? Whatever - things change and adapt to their surroundings... or are adapted, as in the case of wolves to Corgis and Pugs. I don't hate religion. I think it is a good thing to be religious and to attend church. I think it inspires and moderates people. The real problem I had with the article and many articles like it is that the author essentially cannot stand another view; you bow to religion or you don't know anything. I think that argument misses an opportunity. That is I don't think religion should fight science. We know the earth is not the center of the universe and writing articles trying to discredit science on this is foolish and makes the author appear naïve and uneducated. Embrace what we learn, what science discovers, don't be archaic and stodgy, don't tilt at windmills. Most of the good things about religion are not harmed in anyway by evolution. Embrace it, religion and evolution can coexist.
What religion was Mao and Stalin following? Do you include pagan beliefs as religion? It’s not so much the religion, especially with Christianity, that demands the submission of man to man, but the corruption of man that demands the enslavement of man. Without the positive influence of religion, there would be no grand western society; we would be in far worse place.
I believe that humans are inherently good. Religion typically takes their "commandments" from man's natural good beliefs not the other way around. It is a dismal belief that without religion we would all be terrible people. I hope you don't actually believe that.
The other side of the coin is that probably more harm and mayhem has resulted from religion and religious beliefs than anything else in our history. The 9/11 terrorists were following their religious dictates and were only sorry that they couldn't kill more of us for their god. If I got Meyer's drift, Evolution works within a species to adapt to local environments. But the numbers (calculated several ways) for random beneficial mutations to create a new species just do not exist within the geologic time frames available. This is from calculating with DNA, proteins, chromosomes etc.
Second, his point is: the information contained in the DNA etc. is exactly like a language, a computer code. In that sense, the order and complexity could only be created/designed by an Intelligence. He makes no statement as to the character of that intelligence or comparison to God or gods. The common belief in science is that major changes/jumps in evolution were the result of interstellar events. Major climate changes, massive radiation/irradiation from our sun or other sources. These things made changes that cannot be explained "simply" or easily by evolution. These events created numerous "Frankensteins" out of whatever life forms were in existence at the time of the event. Some of these dramatic changes were good and allowed favored evolutionary progress. Perhaps 99.9% of them were not and as a result they simply died off. Imagine a solar event that caused DNA and physical changes in every living thing happening today and every living thing changed in perhaps different ways and their progeny changed in perhaps even more different ways. Kind of exciting when you think about it.

Someone sure has a bee in their bonnet. Wouldn't a separate physics department be racist and violate Title IX?
Beto O'Rouke? Why is anyone still reporting on him? Obama goes off message by buying ocean front home, in face of “global warming rising oceans.”
I can understand why they want a separate course in analytical mechanics for diversity students. I had that course in college and it was formidable. The professor that taught the course was called Dr. Death. We started the course with 36 students in class and ended it with 6 students in class. If you survived analytical mechanics, you got to brag. Obviously this course is not suitable for diversity admission students unless they dumb it down.
They'll use "Physics For Dummies" as the text. Those who pass will get to enroll in "Physics 1".
For Students Who Grew Up Poor, An Elite Campus Can Seem Like a Sea of Wealth and Snobbery: Can "seem like"?? I would expect it to BE one, in general. With some exceptions.
Leftists Are Extremely Upset About MTV’s VMA Host Making Jokes About People Who Get Upset About Jokes: I was expecting this was from The Babylon Bee. I am SOOOOOOO not bummed for those Leftists. (As in Right, Serves Them.) Panel Appointed by Bill Di Blasio Concludes That New York City's Gifted and Talented Magnet School System Must Be Eradicated, In Order to Desegregate Schools: Old Bill hates smart kids. In 2019, Bombings And Explosions Up 45% In Sweden: As I've said before, when will Swedish men bring back their inner Viking selves? Were there bombings and explosions before a massive influx of 'refugees'?
I mean, I can't really see Swedes setting off bombs targeting each other... Or is it badthink just to even look for a proximate cause? Ask Bill Nye the Science Fraud about his "special friend" Robert Picardo and the cause of Picardo's divorce.
My elite campus wasn't a "sea" of wealth and snobbery, but there was a fair bit. I enjoyed doing better than them.
If Trump was right about Greenland he used the worst possible manner to achieve it.
A serious and shrewd President would have initially made a secret approach to Denmark, perhaps through one of our European allies. Instead he took the approach guaranteed to get a negative reaction -- going public with no prep work whatsoever. He's probably made it impossible for any future president to approach Denmark. Maybe President Trump did just that and got turned down, insulted even. then forced them to be public about it. To drive a wedge between good ole Denmark and its colony, Greenland.
We would never know from media coverage and inquisition reportage. Re: The Problem With MRIs... Read Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery ... saved me surgery, and put me back to work and play...
"Someone sure has a bee in their bonnet"
That's funny and ironic. That is exactly what I thought when I read the article. The author did throw down the challenge. I merely pointed out the errors he made. Saul quote: "Why? To save and revive the superstition that is religion. To take back and retain the power over people and lives that has been religion's dictate since before recorded history."
As this is completely extraneous to the discussion, wildly overgeneralizes about "religion," as if it were somehow one thing, and unnecessarily insulting, it's pretty clear who's got the bee. You've been given one opportunity for a little insight. This is a second. I don't think anyone will bother with a third. It is not "extraneous to the discussion" it IS the discussion. The author took a shot at anyone and everyone who believes in evolution and went on to prove that they are denying the obvious that everyone like them is so enlightened to see and understand. Why take that shot??? Why call all the scientists and others who believe in evolution names and worse? My point is that it wasn't necessary. Religion, most religions, have beliefs that were formed thousands of years ago; like the earth being the center of the universe. These beliefs aren't true, provably untrue, so why persist??? Religion can exist and flourish without trying to prove evolution is untrue (ditto for earth being the center of the universe), so why persist??? It makes them (those who persist in fighting evolution) appear sadly ignorant and it calls into doubt everything they say about religion. Leave science to scientists and stick to the "thou shalt not steal" etc.
Also, and least extraneous, stop taking the cheap shots and then clutching your pearls when someone disagrees. If the author has the balls to write this stuff then surely they should have the balls to deal with the pushback. P.S. The purpose of "confession" to a priest was political. It was used to gather information on the common people and the elite. The church used it to black mail the elite. kings and lawmakers for centuries. Look at the Church in Central and South America where they priests are Marxist socialists and have used their ability to gather information to get "enemies" killed. They have started or at the least enabled wars. They use their power over the people for political purposes. |
