Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Hillary Clinton's weight and how she looks is not a fit political subject. Not even if she decides to run again.
It's not like there's a shortage of important criticisms of her. The lack of transparency regarding something as easily observable as her physical condition is an important foundation for building the case that she's not truthful about things not so easily observed.
There are substantive criticisms of Donald Trump to be made as well and when the Democrats starting making those the centerpiece of their arguments then the rest of us will lay off Hillary's cankles. To me, the big "tell" about the photo of Ms Clinton was not the tent but her legs. I've seen worse, but the thickness of her ankles and the puffiness about them did not look good.
Not sure I agree with the Woz. He's a great technical intellect. Not so much business-savvy. But his adherents love him and will follow every word.
The big tech companies are in hot competition. They aren't monopolies, not even close. Facebook hates Google, they both hate Amazon, Disney is starting to make noise and scare all of them (and it's not even remotely a tech company), Oracle and MSFT are still fairly large and really control the nuts and bolts of a good portion of the tech world. Breaking up companies is something you do because they have a clear hold over an industry sector and can potentially abuse it. I'd argue in a free market, that's almost impossible to achieve. AT&T was a monopoly because competition was illegal - by government mandate. Standard Oil was broken up at a point in time when its market share was declining rapidly. A&P faced anti-trust lawsuits during the Depression. When it was growing and among the few firms ACTUALLY HIRING. Oftentimes these concepts of breaking up companies are based on flawed logic - and when they are ultimately implemented, the reasons for them make no sense whatsoever. Facebook and Google do not provide the same service.
That's like saying Standard Oil and Ford were competitors. The logic for breaking them up is not flawed. The fallacy is your straw men arguments. I agree, don't break them up. However I do think they are breaking laws, In fact I would call for Google to be shut down. And put some CEOs and others at facebook in jail. If nothing else lets regulate the shit out of them because they are openly anti-American and are causing real harm. Perhaps appoint watchdogs to attend all their meetings. Open their books, publish their tax returns and the tax returns of high level employees. I would also favor some of the ambulance chasing lawyers and AGs that attack law abiding businesses to bring law suits against the big tech companies.
After many years near the top of several Fortune 100 corporations, while I disagree agree with you.The tech giants -- and other centi-billion size non-tech corporations -- engage in some competition but by sheer size stifle most competition as well as innovation. Further, as a matter of effective span of control -- although not an antitrust matter -- they are basically inefficient compared to a more competitive market.
The idea of breaking up companies is based on more than flawed logic, it's based on the weird notion that it's up to someone other than the owners of the business and its customers how big the business should be. Catch them engaging in restraint of trade or erecting illegal barriers to entry, and I'll listen. Just wish they were smaller? Form your own smaller, nimbler business and out-compete them.
I put this dilemma in the same category as the question "How much should a CEO earn?" U.S. Intel Gatekeeper Dragging Feet on Trump-Russia Files, Insiders Say
And? So hire the right people to get it done! There are plenty of people who would love to go through these files, and Lois Lerner, and HRC, etc. We'd love to out the corruption, and then prosecute it. It is ridiculous when I read about some bureaucrat stonewalling a legal investigation. That sort of thing didn't happen when WI raided homes of Scott Walker. That was different. The rules for folks with a D after their names, or their supporters, are SIGNIFICANTLY different than those with an R.

Between the Amazon fires and the HK protests, Macron is hoping the yellow vest protests over his incompetence will fail to get international attention. His G7 presence was underwhelming.

Comey... what a piece of work that guy is.
I’m no psychologist but it sure seems he is revealing some clinical diagnosis with his repeated delusions and claims that he is a victim. Or, just a really committed bullshit artist. Recycling is a scam overdue to die. So why isn't Rep. Ilhan Omar's vida loca getting the same penalties Rep. Duncan Hunter's got? She's a Democrat, in with the In-Crowd, "who can do NO wrong". Comey: When are all my critics going to apologize after my vindication from Horowitz? CNN: This looks pretty damning to us. And as we all know, if CNN disagrees with what a Democrat says, well, it's gotta be BAD. Re: Comey, Rosenstein, Barr, Horowitz
So the prevailing wisdom is that this case against Comey isn't THAT solid and would be difficult to win a prosecution in DC. Well, it seems the precedent has been set by the Department of JustUs lawyers on the Mueller team that you can be forced into bankruptcy defending yourself against some minor infraction or even for being a witness to a fake crime, rousted out of bed in the middle of the night by a team of heavily armed FBI goons and frogmen, or thrown in solitary confinement for some tax charge. Is that justice? If it is, then why isn't it being practiced against people in the government who should be held to a higher standard who arguably did worse crimes? If it isn't justice, why are people like Andrew Weissmann still on the DO JustUs payroll? Like I've said before. Wake me up when and if there are indictments. I need the sleep. QUOTE: Surgeon General deems cannabis completely unsafe for pregnant women, teens I'm sure it's no more harmful to pregnant women than it is to non-pregnant women. It's the baby that's being harmed but we can't say that lest we acknowledge there's two (or more) lives at stake. If it is just unsafe for the baby, it is the woman's choice.
But the Surgeon General is mostly blowing smoke people won't listen heed. Is cannabis just now unsafe as it is legalized after generations of teens smoking it? I advise against partaking, but announcements like this are not a way to convince people or appear to be anything but political. I think it obvious that smoking it is harmful to anyone. As for teens and (unborn) children, introducing psychoactive drugs to developing brains should always be considered harmful until proven otherwise.
The New America:
‘Stand Your Ground’ Case in Florida Ends With Manslaughter Verdict. Michael Drejka said he had feared for his life when he killed Markeis McGlockton in an argument over a parking spot. Kate Steinle case: Appeals court overturns gun conviction of Jose Inez Garcia Zarate. So the illegal alien goes scot free but the white guy who was attacked does life in jail for self defense. It is probable that the illegal alien stole the gun and pulled the trigger either intending to shoot someone or did so with no concern for who might get shot. Mr. Drejka did in fact act in self defense but a jury disagreed so he goes to jail for life. Ask yourself if a white man in Florida had thrown an illegal alien to the ground in a vicious attack and the illegal alien shot him in self defense would the illegal alien be found guilty??? |
