Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, November 22. 2016The "arc of history"
As I see it, the "Left" tends authoritarian in its impulses. The part of the "Right" that I identify with as an American tends towards individual freedom from power, but few talk about that anymore except at the margins (eg pot smoking and job licensing). Really, now it's all about what government power can do for/to me or can do for/to you. Leviathan won as if so often does. Gravity. Not just in the US, but all over. Is there a Right Side of History?

Along the Autism Spectrum..
To varying degrees and for varying and not well-understood reasons, these kids, even if quite bright, do not fit in well in most settings. Their behavior and demeanor make others uneasy. While many people do not fit in well, "spectrum" people have qualitatively different challenges. It's in their hard-wiring. Many or most would like to function as normally as possible, so programs like the above offer some hope. Meat injectors: A re-post for Thanksgiving
Those plastic injectors are worthless crap. The herbs and spices jam up the injector holes, and the whole thing falls apart after a few birds. We then made do with a large-apertured medical syringe which one of our medical friends had (which I hope was clean), but this is really the cooking tool that is needed: the stainless steel Bayou Classic with one needle for herb mixtures and another for marinade (photo below). Many folks like to inject a turkey with sherry or cider. I bought a couple of those for my cooking buddies. (Update: I did, and got one for myself too. Would be scary to see a nurse approaching you with one of these.) This year, I am going to inject those big SOBs with a warmed mix of sherry, butter, honey, and herbs under the skin and deep into the meat. That can not be bad. The Indians did it that way, didn't they? Of course they did - when they weren't busy scalping, raping, and torturing their neighboring tribes.

Brace Yourself for Four Years of Nonstop Freakoutrage
Intimidation tactics will not work. Still, they should attack the Trump voters instead of Trump himself. Blame the people - roughly half the voters - not The Donald. Blame me. Donald just offered people a choice. Not his fault. Choice is good.

Arrested DevelopmentWild Turkeys and The National WTF
No, this is not about the national WTF? health care bill. While our Editor tends to focus on supporting Ducks Unlimited and the Nature Conservancy, both highly worthy volunteer organizations, I have been a supporter of the National Wild Turkey Federation for many years. The recovery of the American Wild Turkey populations, like that of Egrets after the turn of the last century, has been a giant success of intelligent conservation. Whether you want to shoot 'em and eat 'em, or just look at these huge birds (I like to do both), their resurgence is a great gift to America - thanks to conservation organizations. The WTF has basically accomplished their goal. Turkeys are everywhere now, and huntable in most places. However, like government programs, non-profits rarely close up shop when their work is done. They tend to find something else to do, if only to keep their jobs. It's a sad fact that Ducks Unlimited still has much of their original mission to accomplish - wild duck populations, and the other wetlands critters that inhabit the habitats that DU protects and rehabilitates - remain far below where they were in years past. There are a number of species of Wild Turkey in the New World. None native to the Old World. Photo above: You all know that the males only display like that when they are overcome with love and/or horniness.

Cranberry ChutneyDelicious stuff, especially with chicken and other fowl. Right now is the only time of year to buy cranberries in volume. I freeze them in the bags because I am fond of them, but chutney is one tasty way to put them up. There are many recipes online.
