Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, July 21. 2007Show Them to MeA country song by Rodney Carrington. Not OK for work, but cute - not porn. "If you love your country, then show them to me..." It's a guy thing - some might say a bit adolescent. (h/t, Ace) The music video, with many bare chests, here.

Ocean liner in a cycloneShips can weather far worse storms than this, but it's unusual to have a helo taking film at the same time. This is the cruise ship Voyager in cyclone Valentina in the Med on Valentine's Day, 2005. Not very romantic. (h/t, And rightly So)

1926 ElcoThis 62' 1926 Elco yacht is powered by twin diesels and, to my mind, is one handsome craft. Regular readers know that I am fond of the Elco tradition, partly because my Gramps owned the Elco dealership for New England. This one is for sale.

Thursday, July 19. 2007Bandon DunesI have a friend who is at Bandon this week. He says that it is the real deal - a true windy Links golf course. It looks darn pleasant, and almost makes me wish I played golf. But I already have more than enough hobbies and chores.

Monday, July 16. 2007HebronicsThis bit came in over the transom: The New York City Public Schools have officially declared "Jewish English", now dubbed "Hebronics", as a second language. Backers of the move say the city schools are the first in the nation to recognize Hebronics as a valid language and a significant attribute of American culture. Continue reading "Hebronics"

Tacoma Narrows BridgeFor those who appreciate the engineering marvel of bridges, Dr. Bob has #17 in his photo series on the construction of the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge. I have been following the construction with Dr. Bob all along. This is a new section of roadway being guided into place. I am in awe of people who can design and build such wonderful, useful things.

Das Leben der Anderen
Alistair's review at Flares of this German movie, The Lives of Others, is lengthy but fascinating. I want to see the movie - and I do not particularly care for movies.

Saturday, July 14. 2007What is a painting? You are an artist. You buy the paint, then what? A piece by Daniel Kunitz in the NY Sun about a new show at the MOMA titled "What is Painting?" - a quote:
Read the whole thing. Image: A 1969 painting by William T. Williams in the MOMA's show, from the NY Sun article.

Giant duckies threaten civilizationMany remain blithely unaware, and many remain in denial and therefore unconcerned, despite sightings around the world. Story here. (h/t, Tim Blair). Rumors that Dick Cheney is behind all of this cannot be confirmed as yet, but Congressional hearings will surely be scheduled soon, with a flurry of subpoenas for the White House. But I suspect that this may be the result of an experiment-gone-wild, performed by the crazed biologists at Ducks Unlimited.

Tuesday, July 10. 2007Antoni GaudiDrove down to JFK on Saturday to put the youngest pup on a plane to spend a while in Barcelona to soak up some Spanish history, literature and culcha. Yes, and to perfect her Spanish too. For me, the highest points of Spanish culture are El Greco and Cervantes - but probably not the astonishing Gaudi. Words like "ugly," "strange," and "hallucinogenic" do not do justice to how interesting his buildings are to look at, though. Here are some Gaudi buildings. Photo is Gaudi's Casa Batllo in Barcelona.

Monday, July 9. 2007Men and womenToday, one of the Bird Dog litter began her first big job in NYC. She was appropriately apprehensive. More accurately, scared halfway out of her mind. I sent her an email this morning: "Be brave and strong, honey. You can do it!" While chatting with Mrs. Bird Dog tonight, she told me that she had sent her an email too: "Are you going to wear the pearls I gave you?"

Ask Dr. Bliss!A new weekly feature at Maggie's Farm! Ask Dr. Bliss! Dr. Bliss can tell you how to be happy, healthy and wise. She knows the Meaning of Life, the Purpose of Existence, the True Nature of God, whether human relationships are worth the bother, which of your sexual and violent fantasies are sick and which are wholesome, how to please a man, what your mother really thought about you, and where to find the best prices for Manolos. Photo: Our Dr. Joy Bliss in a pensive moment, contemplating the mind-brain problem, the mysteries of counter-counter-transference, and wondering what shoes to wear tomorrow. (Yes, it's a friendly spoof of our blog friend Dr. Helen, who has begun an Ask Dr. Helen feature at Pajamas Media - an excellent idea, and we are chagrined that we did not think of it first.) Editor's Note: Check the comments. Wiseacres abound around here. The Boeing 787

Friday, July 6. 2007Super-yacht of the Day: Mirabella VAt 247', Mirabella V is the world's largest single-masted sailboat. She can do 20 knots under sail: that lengthy waterline helps with boat speed. Best of all, you can lease her, with crew, by the week - but it's a bit pricey for the average workin' stiff at $300,000 per week. Summers in the Med, winters in the Caribbean. Details and great photos at Mirabella V.
