Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Giant duckies threaten civilization

Many remain blithely unaware, and many remain in denial and therefore unconcerned, despite sightings around the world. Story here. (h/t, Tim Blair). Rumors that Dick Cheney is behind all of this cannot be confirmed as yet, but Congressional hearings will surely be scheduled soon, with a flurry of subpoenas for the White House.

But I suspect that this may be the result of an experiment-gone-wild, performed by the crazed biologists at Ducks Unlimited.

While some would argue, it is perfectly doable - though challenging - with a light and lithe 28 gauge.

You laugh, but these squeak toys really are looming everywhere. Thank goodness they CAIR about us and only want a Live Earth.

Never see any 28 ga anymore. Folks think might as well go for a .410--and that's true, but if a .410 was 'gauged' it would be a 67 ga. So there's a diff alright. I think the monster will require field artillery, or at least a 105 MM recoiless rifle. BTW, are we sure it's a duck? Could be a baby chicken.

Very fond of 28 ga. Excellent pattern. Good for grouse and woodcock, and very light. Have a Beretta 28 ultralight or whatever it was called. Nice. A .410 is only good for starlings and pigeons in the barn, but I know a guy who only competes in sporting clays with a .410 to make it fair.

Love .410s, but don't know why. Prob 'cause first gun--got it at age 10 or so & still have it--was a .410 Harrington & Richardson "Topper" model. The daughters love .410--no kick. Clay shooting, that's a toughie--but .410 reaches as far (& depending on choke prob patterns as wide) as anything else, just gets there with less shot.

Too bad that 28 gauge prices for older guns have gone through the roof. A 16 gauge Elsie, maybe $2,000. A 28 gauge equivalent, maybe five times that. Say - you can all chip in and buy me a 28 gauge Parker or Holland & Holland. For my birthday. Which is today. :-)

A Beretta 20/28 gauge Silver Pigeon combo (what a name!) might be nice. I think Browning makes a 20/28 combo in the Citori line. Much more reasonable than the Elsies and Parkers i really want...

In my experience, only insufferable egomaniacal showoffs use .410s for clays. I hate 'em. :-)
