Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The Loss of a PetI have many more Iceland pictures to post, but I've been busy. We left knowing our pet bulldog was on her last legs. She'd been diagnosed with congestive heart failure 2 weeks prior to our trip. Making the decision on what to do with her was easy, Mrs. Bulldog said we'd go and let a friend watch our baby. Everything worked out for the best, and we came home to a happy pup, all of 12 1/2 years old. With Thanksgiving coming, she'd get to see all her favorite family members. We took our annual picture on the beach, which she's featured prominently in for all of her years. She was pleased to see her bull terrier cousin, her Nanny and Poppy, and all the people who made her happy over the years. She had even taken a trip down the shore to see my family.

Income mobilityFew people are locked for life into an income category. Grad students are poor in income, as are many retirees who have decent wealth. That's why snapshot income data is deceiving.

Turns out all of humanity is related to a single coupleSo you waste your money with those $120 spit tests. It has been known for a long time that all humans share an ancestor in Mitochondrial Eve, but it was never clear that we all might share the same great, great, great....etc - grandpa too. There was an ancient genetic bottleneck, probably due to some natural disasters (caused by climate change?). Clearly, we can name these people Adam and Eve. Could consciousness all come down to the way things vibrate? From today's LectionaryJohn 18:33-37 18:33 Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" 18:34 Jesus answered, "Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?" 18:35 Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?" 18:36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here." 18:37 Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." Saturday, November 24. 2018From the cockpit of a big airplane

Favorite Thanksgiving leftovers
My favorite is a slice of turkey, some mayo, a spoonful of cranberry sauce and a spoonful of stuffing - on white bread, It has to be white bread. Some people like Turkey hash which is ok if you use enough black pepper. Needs a ton of fresh ground black pepper to not taste like Cardboard Hash. (BTW, Your Dry, Stringy Turkey Is Caused By Climate Change) What do y'all like? Paranoid yet?

There is no need to get all OCD and paranoid about it, but turkey seems more prone to carrying salmonella than chicken nowadays. Easily cured, but unpleasant to experience. As I understand it, the first Thanksgiving harvest feast in the Plymouth colony in 1621 featured codfish, wild pigeon, grouse, clams, corn or cornmeal pudding, duck, squash or pumpkin, and some venison provided by some Indians. If there was a turkey, it wasn't reported. There might have been one. Why no Oysters Rockefeller? Who knows? Those Puritan ancestors of mine were half-crazy, you know.
