We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I live in the East Bay of San Francisco. We get a lot of Scrub Jays, which I love. They are really gregarious, they fly around our backyard like P-51 Mustangs. Every once in a while, one of them will perch near our house, and look at us as if to say "What the hell are YOU looking at?" They take no shit off of anybody.
We get lots of flickers here in Idaho. Soon we'll have mallard ducks when the irrigation canals start running. And don't get me started on the killdeers. Most annoying sounding birds I can think of. In the Sierra foothills I remember seeing little green finches.
It does my heart good to hear the songbirds in the morning, even as temperatures dropped to 2 degrees last week here in the Poconos in Pennsylvannia. In a little over a month my humminbird feeders go up as I await the males who come earlier than the females. Yes, spring is on the way. I am delighted to bid winter adieu!
