Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, July 28. 2021"Cardio" exercise, reposted Real Cardio means training the heart muscle (the invisible muscle) and stressing the cardio-pulmonary system. For the Cardio component of our Fitness For Life program, we recommend some endurance cardio but, more importantly, HIIT cardio training. What does it do? Primarily, it builds cardiac muscle and cardiac vessels. We need those for life exertions (eg mountain hikes), for endurance, for energy, for our sports, and, sadly, to help us survive our first or second heart attacks. Since most of us will die from cancer or heart disease, why not postpone the latter if we can, and have more energy and life vigor in the process? There's some evidence that it might help postpone dementia too. HIIT entails maximum sprints, 30-45 seconds, integrated in a regular cardio program. You want your heart rate near you max output, 90% or more. This can be done with swimming, treadmill, stairmaster, Jacob's Ladder, rower - whatever. Best not to undertake this without a stress echocardiogram and your doc to clear you first to make sure you do not drop dead in the gym. That would be embarassing for you and for them. Customizing your HIIT workout. If you do 5-10 fully-intense, max effort cardio sprints on your cardio days, you will feel it. A bit of dizziness means you've done your best. Good calis classes offer this too, and you can, of course, exert yourself to your own best level. Reminder: Whether you do "long-slow" exercises, or do HIIT, or jus take walks or swims, none of these will offer you any meaningful loss of abdominal fat. Fat is nutritional unless you workout 6 hours/day.
QQQEvery record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right. - George Orwell, 1984 Can science be objective?

California vs. the SAT examsThe University of California Is Lying to Us. Does getting right with contemporary concepts of anti-racism mean reviving one of the state’s most shameful traditions? All the data show that the SAT roughly approximates an IQ test. That was not by design. It just happened.

It was a dramatic hour or so on the water for us. We have some serious boaters who read us. For them, stormy nighttime navigation is probably easy. I have been a day-boater, salt water, most of my life (sail and power), but I am not used to this sort of overnight thing away from port. We have to up our game but I guess that midlife requires new things. Decay, or grow. Another problem I have with overnight boating is that I like to get to the gym early. It straightens out my brain and body. On a boat, at 5 AM, there is no escape and nothing to do but sit or eat, neither of which I like to do very much. Ocean sailing with autopilot is another thing entirely. A quote from a commenter on Our Scariest Days At Sea (4 days from land): "There are times when sailing feels like Murphy's Law in action. Because if anything can go wrong, it will. And, most likely, it will happen at night."

Trying a new Dog Days of Summer link format
As a Dog Days experiment, I'd like to ask our folks to directly post their links onto the website whenever they feel like it. Run the links through Notepad first though, or the font will be screwy. Sort-of the way Instapundit's contributors do. It will lighten my load, and, remember, besides the $300 k I get annually from Dunkin (just kidding), this is not a paid job and my life is busy with fun, and with some difficult challenges, always. And yeah, I am not retired and never want to be. (Mrs. BD complains that I can not learn to relax. I hope I never will, although I do read at night in bed.) In July and August, we tend to run a fair number of re-posts. Our contributors are welcome to repost past stuff that would be interesting. Especially on weekends.

Here's a sample: Christians are called to live differently from the rest of the world. That requires a different way of thinking. Lots of his 20+ minute sermons on that website. Give him a try.
From today's LectionaryEphesians 3:14-21 3:14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 3:15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 3:16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 3:17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 3:18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 3:19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 3:20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 3:21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
