Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Pilots


If you have been on ships at sea, you know how interesting it is to watch pilots embark or disembark sometimes miles from land, in all weather. The pilot takes over a ship, more or less, when approaching land.


It is not easy to become a US Pilot. 


Pilot boats are the toughest small vessels, with master handlers. Sometimes pilots have doors to enter a ship. but often ladders as in this photo. In bad seas, they jump.

One of the more humorous conversations on bridge to bridge radio in Bahrain one night. I heard Ras Tanura port control calling the pilot. They must have hailed him 20 times on the radio after midnight. He finally responded and they asked him what took so long and he replied that, "he'd fallen off the bloody ladder and it took some time for the boat to recover him from the sea." He sounded unbelievably pissed off. Didn't hear another peep from Ras Tanura Port Control after that. Not sure why they were hailing him.

Tugboats are also interesting - see them cosy up to a really large ship to help dock same. And during WW II, a tugboat would often be at the tail end of a convoy, ready to dash in and try to save seamen from a torpedoed ship.
