Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, July 5. 2009The Great American FeedbagHow beautiful America wasAt American Digest. Semi-sort-of kinda related: More tea parties. Who would not attend a tea party, when invited? I am sympathetic, but, as a red-neck Yankee, I might be more in favor beer parties, meself. Hold the Chardonnay, but I will not despise the baked - or grilled - Brie. Yankee Doodle, keep it up! God is BackFrom a review of the book God is Back in The Washington Monthly:
Back? I never knew He left. Maybe He was just vacationing in my neighborhood, where we ignorant bumpkins cling to God and our guns instead of investing our limited capacities for faith in the arrogant, incompetent bozos in government - most of whom, today, could never do much of anything in real life (except for Sarah Palin, who knows how to make a living fishing, and Mitt, who understands finance). But is God good for business? I thought God was all about God's kingdom - the invisible kingdom, and not man's. Read the whole piece. From today's Lectionary "When I am weak, then I am strong."2 Corinthians 12: 2-10 (New Living Translation) 2 I was caught up to the third heaven fourteen years ago. Whether I was in my body or out of my body, I dont knowonly God knows. 3 Yes, only God knows whether I was in my body or outside my body. But I do know 4 that I was caught up to paradise and heard things so astounding that they cannot be expressed in words, things no human is allowed to tell. 5 That experience is worth boasting about, but Im not going to do it. I will boast only about my weaknesses. 6 If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth. But I wont do it, because I dont want anyone to give me credit beyond what they can see in my life or hear in my message, 7 even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. 8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 9 Each time he said, My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 Thats why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Saturday, July 4. 2009Tea Party in LotusLandPity us San Diegans. Its really hard to get too worked up about anything when you live in paradise. Especially when todays Tea Party was held at perhaps the most crowded, impossible to park at site in our area, the beautiful Mission Bay Park, magnet for picnicking and water-frolicking families and friends. Mile long lines to exit I5, then a two-lane access road of bumper-to-bumper traffic hemmed in by the largest congregation of monster RVs who must have arrived at dawn to hog 5+ parking spaces apiece. The several hundred who showed up for the Tea Party at 11 AM had to hike in a mile or two, if not giving up. I persevered, finding a spot on the other side of
Fellow walkers.
I finally arrived. For the drivers crawling along, this roadside bunch received honks and cheers from thousands of traffic-clogged drivers. No road rage here, just Obama-irked.
Heres a photo of the crowd as I approached.
My Catskills humor, whoever picked this spot has less judgment than the President, drew chuckles from the crowd of laid-back San Diegans. Better received than the droning on of the featured speakers, an organizer telling me no local notables invited. Would have had to commandeer a Marine chopper and rapelled in, anyway. Appreciated being given a free pocket-size, indexed Constitution, on the front: its only keepers, the people quote from George Washington, and more good Founders quotes inside the covers. These Dont Tread On Me T-shirts sold out at only $10 each. As many Dont Tread On Me flags waving as Stars-n-Stripes.
So, thats what the Tea in Tea Party stands for. Friendly people wherever I stopped.
I didnt see anyone passing contact lists or such. A nice event, but some work needed to build an activist movement. But, in Now, Im on to the juiciest, meatiest rack of ribs, and some delectable Belgian beer. Happy 4th. BTW, here's some other Tea Parties, courtesy of Instapundit Glenn Reynolds. Break time linksTaking a little break from cleaning the basement, which has now dried out but still smells musty. I had to hose down and sun-dry tons of hunting and fishing gear. Mold on my Filson wax trousers and chaps, but it could be hosed off. Later, will trim some hedges. Then, take a needed shower, and go to a big annual 4th barbecue party with the reading of the Declaration followed by bbq pork, squid salad, shrimp risotto, lobsters, and burgers, tons of different salads and pies including rhubarb - my favorite - and real cocktails too. Hope it doesn't rain again, but a t-storm will probably blow through. It always does, as if to remind us of the battles for freedom. God's fireworks make man's fireworks seem small. At Reason TV, PJ O'Rourke asks "Where was the government with Studebaker?" I miss seeing them, but never would have bought one. The Anchoress has tons of misc thoughts about Palin. I like the lady, but I'm just not that into celebs. Speaking of Palin, here's Alaska Speaking of celebs, fat celebs are stoking the obesity crisis. Stoke on, celebs. It's a free country. East Germans: life was better under Communism. As we have said repeatedly, not everybody is suited for freedom. Americans are supposed to be. The "ominous rise" of adjuncts in colleges and universities. Seems to me like normal job conditions for most folks. Is Afghanistan "winnable"? Matthew Parris doubts it. Afg. isn't a country, except in name only. So what is there to win? Afg, it seems to me, is an attempt at nation-building where there never was a nation. A tall order. The Great Lakes water levels are rising again. They said AGW was making them drop. Waiting to see if they'll say that AGW is making them rise. My view? There is no "normal" level any more than there are "normal" temperatures. Nature is always in flux. Shut down debate on health care, says the O to the Dems What's with Powell? Is he just a regular confused person like me?
Image: Our international readers may not realize that the Gadsden flag, often featured on libertarian-minded websites, was an early American flag back before the upholstery stripes. Happy 4th to our readersFrom Bruce Walker on What the Declaration of Independence is Not:
Hero's TunnelIt's a big travel weekend. In Yankeeland, you might very well find yourself driving through the Merritt Parkway's Hero's Tunnel under West Rock ridge in New Haven. Amusingly, the Merritt, the earliest American parkway, had these criteria in its design:
With the lighting, the Hero's Tunnel looks like the gates of hell - but it really just takes you to Hamden:

Happy Independence Day!It's not July Fourth without John Philip Sousa:Stars and Stripes Forever with a nifty tribute to the American military. Obamas WTF War!To our independence we owe that our first among firsts President, George Washington, labored to keep a poorly supplied army in the field. George Washington had at his back a Jew, Haym Solomon, largely responsible for obtaining crucial funding. (See below) Now we have as President a man of another stripe, whose commitment to our security and the lives of our fighting men and women is summed up as WTF! That seems his attitude toward others as well, say Jules Crittendon and Herschel Smith bring us, sadly, up to date.
Now, Wikipedia on Haym Solomon:
Haym Solomon died unpaid back and broke.

Friday, July 3. 2009Palin's Independence Day OrationI usually do some fancy post for the 4th of July, but Sarah Palin's reasons for moving forward with what she believes best for America is the most contemporary reminder one could read. So, please read it all. She's a straight-shooter (who can really shoot!), so take her word(s) at face value, a high value, and look forward to more from her for us. I'm going to a San Diego Tea Party tomorrow morning. What are you doing to help revitalize the principles and future of the nation we love? SarahHer speech showed how good she is, how real she is. No notes, no teleprompter either. From the heart. I almost cried when she said "The world needs more Trigs" to keep us oriented to the important things. The "elites" don't get it - nor do they know how to operate a fishing boat. She sounds sane, refreshingly unpolished, as Levin says. She has a life, unlike most pols. Too sane for politics? Or what does she want? Whatever it is, she sure does get attention, doesn't she? A cool story. A few links at Insty. Deep thinkingVia Attack Machine -

An overdose of Urdu poetry is known to be dangerous and I know why: I have read more of it than the O has. Friday afternoon linksBillions and billions of Indian sodomists are off the hook. Thoughtful post on adverse selection at Marg Rev. It's a handy concept. Krugman makes for a fine straw man. Sort of like Sullivan does. Usually straw men are unreal, as in "some say...", but these buffoons are, seemingly, real. Krugman wants more government stimulus. WTH? This is like idiot religion: If your prayers aren't answered, just pray harder. Standard Operating Procedures For BBQ This SummerWe are about to enter the BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion: Routine... (1) The woman buys the food. (2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. (3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand. (4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three meter exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can take place without the interference of the woman. Here comes the important part: (5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. More routine... (6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery. (7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he flips the meat Important again: (8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. More routine... (9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table. (10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all: (11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts. (12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyedher night off, and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women.

Hypocrisy and HypocrisyVDH struggles mightily to identify some theme to make sense out of the ways moral flaws and hypocrisies are played out in the politics of today. While I admire his effort and enjoy his examples, I think he mostly misses a simple point, the one Lyndon Johnson made about some Central American dictator: "He may be an SOB, but he's our SOB." It's pure politics, VDH. Politics is not the place to look for moral consistency, moral energy, or intellectual integrity. This is why many believe a degree of sociopathy and narcissism are required in politics. (As Ace puts it re Sanford: "You can get away with being a bastard, but you can't get away with being a buffoon.") To the Left, at least, politics is war in which, as they often brag, the ends may justify the means because they like to believe that they are well-intentioned. "By all means necessary.." etc. I always grant more trust to those who claim to be self-interested - even if they are lying - than to those who claim virtue. Update: More on public virtue from Rick Moran. Wretched discriminationFrom Barone on the Ricci case:

The article discusses how thin the science is of Evolutionary Psychology. It is. Whenever the issue of nature/nurture comes up, I find people making arguments which ignore two of the most basic aspects of human nature: 1. mankind's ability to adapt to almost anything and to create his own environment, and 2. mankind's obligatory social and culture-creating impulses. It is innate to man to create cultures which reflect at least some aspects of human nature, but no culture can eliminate the beast in him. Thank goodness for that.
