Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, June 3. 2008Tuesday cocktail hour linksBoth Andrew Coyne and Ezra Levant are live-blogging the BC kangaroo court today. How volunteerism became un-American. Pajamas. Only right-wing nuts volunteer for things, of course, such as for the armed forces, etc etc. Emotional trauma: talking about it doesn't help. Well, maybe for some it does, but apparently not for most. Is the UN a haven for pedophiles? Iowa sells votes for ethanol subsidies - that ethanol which ruins our lawn-mower and brush-wacker and chain saw engines. Now swing state Florida has its own plan to extract our money from pandering pols. Disgusting. The Death and Life of Bushwick, Brooklyn. Malanga at City Journal. Fascinating. It's partly the story of government policies gone wrong - as usual. One quote:

Co-President again?Hillary wants VP slot. I guess anything is possible, but if I were BHO, I'd stay clear of the toxic Clintons and look for a fresher face. On the other hand, if I were BHO, maybe I might use her to help get elected, then throw her under the bus with all the other inconvenient people. It's getting a bit crowded under that bus. Great news for American farmers (and fish fanciers and other pet owners)
A right to bestiality discovered in Constitution. Does it include insects?
Some Obama linksObama say's he'll remove the wage ceiling for Social Security taxes (without increasing benefits). What states' workers get hit hardest? I read the WaPo Sunday editorial about winning the war in Iraq, but I just noticed the last line: "Now he (Obama) needs a plan for success." Don't count on it: the Left has much invested in American weakness and failure.

The Borromeo familyFew family lines can claim wealth and influence in a straight line from the 12th Century to today. Usually, decadence, disease, dilution, war - and taxes - take their toll. Here's a brief history of the family through 1652, from the family's rise in Tuscany, to their power in Milan, to their landholdings in Lombardy. I do not know what their current status is, but they do own at least three islands in Lago Maggiore, including Isola Bella with its palace and remarkably ornate Italian gardens (which are studied in all garden design classes, I am told, even though they may look vulgar to today's spartan Yankee eye). Such things were designed to impress as much as to delight. All of the soil was brought in by boat: The family even has a family website, but I don't want to try to struggle with the Italian. I'll be there in a week or two, mainly to do some Alpine hiking, some eating, and to see a medieval village or two, and I like to know what I am looking at. Iraq's Ho Chi Minh Trail
The Iraqi Army is finally dealing with the reality of Iran's proxy war in Iraq.

Monday, June 2. 2008Senate to debateGood grief: Senate votes to begin global warming debate. I have a much better idea for those guys and gals: Begin your summer vacations now. Leave Washington. Enjoy America - it's really a nice place full of tons of good people, even if it is a bit warm in the summertime. Monday evening linksConservatives: More generous, and now more honest, too. What does all that mean? For liberals, soldiers are victims. Am Thinker. Not to me. To me, it's a remarkable service to me, my family, and my country. More on Bishop Michael Azir-Ali, at Sisu. WatermelonsKrauthammer on the warming craze, at Moonbattery. One quote: Just as the ash heap of history beckoned, the intellectual left was handed the ultimate salvation: environmentalism. Now the experts will regulate your life not in the name of the proletariat or Fabian socialism but — even better — in the name of Earth itself. Is this what Hillary is waiting for?Waiting for - or planning? Jules has a dandy summary, Audacious Hopefulness. If that mystery tape comes out on YouTube, it might be time for Obama to throw Michelle under the bus too. I've lost track - has he already thrown Farrakhan under it yet, or not? (The MSM didn't tell me that Obama used Pfleger as a counselor. Sheesh.) What does "disabled" mean?Advocates for the "disabled," however defined, want them "mainstreamed" and "normalized" while, at the same time, they advocate for special treatment and "accommodations" for the disabilities. How can you have it both ways? In the UK, the Disabilities Discrimination laws define "disability" as:
Everybody has strengths and serious weaknesses, and deserves respect for their efforts and for their humanity despite their frailities or unappealing characteristics. A nice cheerful young gal with Downs bags my groceries every week at my market. Meanwhile, I have patients with reasonably-controlled bipolar disorder who hire lawyers to help them get on Social Security Disability. (I do not approve of that one bit. I do not approve of "working the system," nor do I think it is good for them: it is terrible for them and for their dignity.) Anyway, you may read a short essay at Spiked here which addresses these issues. Editor's note: Dr. Bliss' post leads to a typically-fine post by David Thompson on modern socialistic ideals titled Details, Details. Quoted by Thompson in his post:
I do not enjoy picking up her tab, but I would never leave her to die in the gutter. I'd be inclined to give her an educational kick in the butt and a few weeks in a drunk tank. Still, such questions keep life interesting, and force us to clarify our thinking. However, I have yet to be convinced that government is the best agency for human mercy. Small "d" democratic government is about votes, jobs, money, perks and power - regardless of the virtue or venality of its practioners.

"Like an old door, every man past a certain age comes with historical warps and creaks of one kind or another, and a woman who wishes to put him to serious further use must expect to do a certain amount of sanding and planing."
- Joseph O'Neill, in Netherland Monday linksThis should be interesting, although Obama's life has already crippled him for a national election. Why go to work? Academia: A closed shop. No diversity, please. Neoneo The AP sticks like glue to the Dem narrative. The sky is falling, but if we elect Obama, all will be well. Hillary to be offered "dignified exit." Duh. The return of the retrosexual?Women often can be heard adopting the passive-aggressive victim posture, and bitching about how easy and good men have it in life. Fortunately, there are plenty of wise women out there who appreciate how tough it is for a boy child to become a man: it is so tough that many never manage to do it. Think about it: we women have far more latitude in how we can be, and in our respectable choices in life. From the Daily Mail, a book review: The Return of Real Men: Ladies, get ready to meet Mr. Retrosexual. They're back? I didn't know they ever went away. Let's bring some politics into this, just for fun. McCain is the Retrosexual: he knows guns, wouldn't back away from a fight and can use his fists, bait a hook, and can mess with an old Chevy carburetor. Obama: pure Metrosexual, with clean nails, probably never used a chain saw or shot a handgun in his life, and probably hires illegal Mexicans to do his gardening. "Pinkapalooza," debunkedA quote from a Cindy in the Wind Amazon review of Shelly Lewis' Five Lessons I Didn't Learn From Breast Cancer (And One Big One I Did):
A friend who has had breast cancer sent some quotes from the book, with the comment: "I Finally Found My Club! Good laughs @ all the BC bullshit. Thought this book might be helpful if you know others who aren't using their B.C to accomplish a spiritual makeover... & don't expect B.C. to fix what's wrong w/ them."
I tend to agree with Ms. Lewis. Bad disease is a plain bad deal. Scary (if you like life), with little redeeming about it.

Not going to church today
Here's one guy who won't be showing up for church this morning. Good grief. I don't think much of Obama's church, but what does it say about a guy that he would throw his church overboard for political power? Isn't that a Faustian deal?
