Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Thursday, July 26. 2007Shakespeare and Peter Saccio
For us, it has been like being half-blind, and finally getting the right glasses. Prof. Saccio's retirement from Dartmouth is a huge loss for the College, but anyone can listen to his course via the Teaching Company's recordings. A bit expensive, but if your library doesn't have them, ask them to buy them. Listening - and re-listening - to Saccio is a pure delight. A quote from the piece in Dartmouth Life:

The Telluride Boycott
City Council calls for impeachment of Bush and Cheney. Hilarity ensues. H/t, Tim Blair. What neo-hippy towns like Telluride do not realize is that most people don't think like them, and take offence.

Wednesday, July 25. 2007(No) Bussard FusionI do not understand the physics of Bussard Fusion, or whether it can ever be commercial. Interesting that California wants to fund it, though. Update: Above story is not true. Thanks, reader.

Airline Sanity
I have a hunch that there is a strong market for smoking flights, especially since most folks in Asia and in Europe seem to enjoy the pleasures of tobacco. Those flights to Hong Kong and Singapore are long, and not everybody has a private jet - yet.

Greeter Falls, TennesseeIt was a good hike up to Greeter Falls on Sunday. This 50' waterfall is not very dramatic with the dry summer we have had here. The swimmin' hole is good. The rock is deep-ocean limestone from the great inland sea. A while ago, there was some fine ichthyosaur fishing here.

Pequot Library Book SaleA re-post for Book lovers (and book dealers) from New England and New York travel hundreds of miles on an annual pilgrimage to the Annual Pequot Library Book Sale, in elegant Southport, CT., on the last weekend of July. It's a gold mine of used books, arranged by categories, and the serendipitous finds can be wonderful. Two years ago I found the complete Pepys diaries. Their 120,000 books on sale come from estates, donations, and especially from other libraries. The money raised helps support the Pequot Library. It goes on for 5 days beginning Friday, and prices go down each day, and everything is free on the last day. However, the place gets raked over carefully, so Saturday is maybe the best day to go. In a way, I hate to let more people know about this event, but it's my duty as a blogger.

Another piece from the show at MOMA. This is by Brazilian Beatriz Milhazes, called Eggplants. I was certain that I had the camera level.

We play with our kids too muchA piece in the Boston Globe makes the case that Americans play with their kids too much. I wonder whether this fits, a bit, with my piece yesterday on The Death of the Grown-Up. It's worth thinking about, but I do not regret one minute of playing Chutes and Ladders, Milles Bournes, Monopoly, Checkers, Chess or tennis with my kids. From the article:
Trust me - no psychologist or social worker in the world is an expert on how to raise a smart, well-adjusted kid. Read the whole thing.

The "What is Painting?" show
Do I love Modern Art? I dunno - I just like to look at stuff and to think about it. I learned that "painting" is anything man-made (or man-altered), based on a flat surface which engages the eye when you stand and look at it. I could have thought of that, but it seems overly-broad: would not that definition apply to a Men's Room sign, when one is in need of one? Anyway, it's a very eclectic show, with the predictable and silly all-white canvas which makes you wish you had a magic marker in your pocket. I liked this very large piece by George Baselitz, "Woodsmen."

Saturday, July 21. 2007Show Them to MeA country song by Rodney Carrington. Not OK for work, but cute - not porn. "If you love your country, then show them to me..." It's a guy thing - some might say a bit adolescent. (h/t, Ace) The music video, with many bare chests, here.

Ocean liner in a cycloneShips can weather far worse storms than this, but it's unusual to have a helo taking film at the same time. This is the cruise ship Voyager in cyclone Valentina in the Med on Valentine's Day, 2005. Not very romantic. (h/t, And rightly So)

Checkers
If two people play checkers without errors, the game will always end in a draw. So claims checkers and computer science expert Jonathan Schaeffer.

1926 ElcoThis 62' 1926 Elco yacht is powered by twin diesels and, to my mind, is one handsome craft. Regular readers know that I am fond of the Elco tradition, partly because my Gramps owned the Elco dealership for New England. This one is for sale.

Monday, July 16. 2007HebronicsThis bit came in over the transom: The New York City Public Schools have officially declared "Jewish English", now dubbed "Hebronics", as a second language. Backers of the move say the city schools are the first in the nation to recognize Hebronics as a valid language and a significant attribute of American culture. Continue reading "Hebronics"

Tacoma Narrows Bridge
I have been following the construction with Dr. Bob all along. This is a new section of roadway being guided into place. I am in awe of people who can design and build such wonderful, useful things.
