Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, July 5. 2009The Great American FeedbagSaturday, July 4. 2009Tea Party in LotusLandPity us San Diegans. It’s really hard to get too worked up about anything when you live in paradise. Especially when today’s Tea Party was held at perhaps the most crowded, impossible to park at site in our area, the beautiful Mission Bay Park, magnet for picnicking and water-frolicking families and friends. Mile long lines to exit I5, then a two-lane access road of bumper-to-bumper traffic hemmed in by the largest congregation of monster RV’s who must have arrived at dawn to hog 5+ parking spaces apiece. The several hundred who showed up for the Tea Party at 11 AM had to hike in a mile or two, if not giving up. I persevered, finding a spot on the other side of
Fellow walkers.
Here’s a photo of the crowd as I approached.
My Catskills humor, whoever picked this spot has less judgment than the President, drew chuckles from the crowd of laid-back San Diegans. Better received than the droning on of the featured speakers, an organizer telling me no local notables invited. Would have had to commandeer a Marine chopper and rapelled in, anyway.
Appreciated being given a free pocket-size, indexed Constitution, on the front: “…its only keepers, the people” quote from George Washington, and more good Founders’ quotes inside the covers. These Don’t Tread On Me T-shirts sold out at only $10 each. As many Don’t Tread On Me flags waving as Stars-n-Stripes.
So, that’s what the Tea in Tea Party stands for.
Friendly people wherever I stopped.
I didn’t see anyone passing contact lists or such. A nice event, but some work needed to build an activist movement. But, in Now, I’m on to the juiciest, meatiest rack of ribs, and some delectable Belgian beer. Happy 4th. BTW, here's some other Tea Parties, courtesy of Instapundit Glenn Reynolds. Break time linksTaking a little break from cleaning the basement, which has now dried out but still smells musty. I had to hose down and sun-dry tons of hunting and fishing gear. Mold on my Filson wax trousers and chaps, but it could be hosed off. Later, will trim some hedges. Then, take a needed shower, and go to a big annual 4th barbecue party with the reading of the Declaration followed by bbq pork, squid salad, shrimp risotto, lobsters, and burgers, tons of different salads and pies including rhubarb - my favorite - and real cocktails too. Hope it doesn't rain again, but a t-storm will probably blow through. It always does, as if to remind us of the battles for freedom. God's fireworks make man's fireworks seem small.
The Anchoress has tons of misc thoughts about Palin. I like the lady, but I'm just not that into celebs. Speaking of Palin, here's Alaska Speaking of celebs, fat celebs are stoking the obesity crisis. Stoke on, celebs. It's a free country. East Germans: life was better under Communism. As we have said repeatedly, not everybody is suited for freedom. Americans are supposed to be. The "ominous rise" of adjuncts in colleges and universities. Seems to me like normal job conditions for most folks. Is Afghanistan "winnable"? Matthew Parris doubts it. Afg. isn't a country, except in name only. So what is there to win? Afg, it seems to me, is an attempt at nation-building where there never was a nation. A tall order. The Great Lakes water levels are rising again. They said AGW was making them drop. Waiting to see if they'll say that AGW is making them rise. My view? There is no "normal" level any more than there are "normal" temperatures. Nature is always in flux. Shut down debate on health care, says the O to the Dems What's with Powell? Is he just a regular confused person like me?
Image: Our international readers may not realize that the Gadsden flag, often featured on libertarian-minded websites, was an early American flag back before the upholstery stripes. Happy Independence Day!
It's not July Fourth without John Philip Sousa:Stars and Stripes Forever with a nifty tribute to the American military. Obama’s WTF War!To our independence we owe that our first among firsts President, George Washington, labored to keep a poorly supplied army in the field. George Washington had at his back a Jew, Haym Solomon, largely responsible for obtaining crucial funding. (See below) Now we have as President a man of another stripe, whose commitment to our security and the lives of our fighting men and women is summed up as WTF! That seems his attitude toward others’ as well, say Jules Crittendon and Herschel Smith bring us, sadly, up to date.
Now, Wikipedia on Haym Solomon:
Haym Solomon died unpaid back and broke.

No notes, no teleprompter either. From the heart. I almost cried when she said "The world needs more Trigs" to keep us oriented to the important things. The "elites" don't get it - nor do they know how to operate a fishing boat. She sounds sane, refreshingly unpolished, as Levin says. She has a life, unlike most pols. Too sane for politics? Or what does she want? Whatever it is, she sure does get attention, doesn't she? A cool story. A few links at Insty. Deep thinkingVia Attack Machine -

Same topic at WSJ: Supremes say no to quotas I’m A LesbianNo, that pick-up line never did work too well for me in picking up girls. It probably wouldn’t have worked too well either for the San Diego sheriff pilloried by ultra-liberal Keith Olberman as Worst Person In The World for doing his duty at a fund raiser party hosted by a renowned lesbian in my Congressional district for (not a lesbian) 3-time loser Democrat candidate for Congress Francine Busby. Local Democrat Congressional candidate Francine Busby and friends' “I’m above the law” attitude won’t work too well either. The other night, in a residential neighborhood, a neighbor complained about the noise (including use of a loudspeaker by Busby). The sheriff arrived, and as per procedure in logging in the visit, asked the host, Shari Barman, for her name and age. She refused and walked away, several times. The sheriff then held her arm. According to the police report, Barman physically attacked him, another party-goer grabbed the sheriff’s leg, and others surrounded the sheriff and broke Barman away. The sheriff called for help, which arrived en masse. Some of the partiers were pepper sprayed. Barman was arrested. The sheriff’s department is conducting an investigation, especially due to the uproar coming from Barman and Busby. News reports are available under “Busby” at Google. In effect, disregarding the sheriff, walking away, and attacking him are similar to such behavior at a traffic stop, subjecting the person to arrest. But, Francine Busby, in her fund raiser linked below, says the sheriffs violated the partiers’ civil rights. Oh yeah, we need another member of Congress with that attitude! Should fit right in with Pelosi’s band. (Wonder why in Rasmussen’s generic poll, Republicans are now favored over Democrats? Or, why in
There’s some more “velly interesting” sidelights: - Barman had previously been arrested for assaulting a cop. As the San Diego Union-Tribune editorial board member in this link comments about this 32-years before arrest:
Note: A news report indicates that some partiers did use their cellphone to take pictures. Will they surface, or were they erased? - - Francine Busby is using this incident to raise campaign funds by claiming to be a “Right-Wing Target.” Oh, that’s why she failed to unseat the incumbent in 2004, and again twice failed against his elected replacement in 2006 even among the uproar when that prior incumbent, Randy Cunningham, had been exposed as terribly corrupt, even though in 2006 Democrats gained seats elsewhere. In 2008’s Democrat landslide, in this marginally moderate Republican district, Obama received 51% of the vote. The Rep incumbent congressman got 55%. I don’t think her playing the victim card will do Busby’s chances any better in 2010. As a commenter to the Busby-as-victim fundraising letter says, "Busby grasps for way to save career." - I had previously covered the previous Busby campaigns in my district, and the day before her second 2006 effort, even more amused, here:
I don’t think even her JC Penney wardrobe will hide her leftist posture this time, either. (In 2006, for example, Busby was embarrassed by her appeal to illegal aliens to help her election.) Busby and her hosts might better next time heed the words of San Diego Union-Tribune columnist Michael Stetz, who himself has faced police called to his house for noise complaints,
No exploitive fundraising appeals or verbally or physically attacking law enforcement, either, Ms. Busby. The San Diego Union-Tribune editorial board member, not especially friendly toward the Rep incumbent nor a reflexive defender of law enforcement, adds today about the “Busby Follies”: "It's so dumb it could end her political career. The Kossacks may buy it, but no one else.”
More on Climate Change or whateverMore on how the EPA hid its own study for political reasons. It's all about Science Abuse for political power. But you already know that. (h/t, Moonbattery). It's just one more scandalous lie and deception to promote government control of everything. Weds. morning links

Tuesday, June 30. 2009A simple solution: Make a/c illegalI saw this morning how our wise and attentive-to-detail Administration wants to control our lightbulbs and lamps. I guess this is what substitutes for a serious energy policy. (I want nuclear. Why waste it all on bombs?) I have a better idea: Make air conditioning illegal. Can you imagine how much reduction of coal- and natural gas-burning that would accomplish? Lights are just a teeny bit of energy use: a/c is huge. Plus the gummint could really stick it to all those Southerners and those evil businessmen in tall buildings who do not vote correctly. (Come to think of it, why not make elevators illegal too?) Get rid of a/c, and everybody can go around cool and mostly nekked, like this Theo gal:

Monday, June 29. 2009Justice doneThe Supremes get it right on the Ricci case. The incredible bit was Justice Ginsburg's statements on "disparate impact." How can you design qualitifications so that "impact" is identical for every imaginable grievance group based on their great, great, grandparent's ethnic or national background? The whole purpose of qualifying exams was to eliminate biased selections and cronyism. Furthermore, after reading some comments around the intertubes, I have two questions: 1. If you even wanted to, how would you design a firefighter test to make black folks do poorly? How? 2. New Haven is a black-controlled Dem machine. The last thing in the world they want to do there is to discriminate against blacks. It's a ridiculous notion.

If you’re not already a regular reader of the Washington Examiner’s opinion pages, you should be. Tom Bevan, founder-editor of daily must-read RealClearPolitics, today writes “Busting the Administrative Cost Benefit Myth,” that a government-run plan would save spending by cutting administrative costs, based on a Heritage Foundation paper that “Medicare Administrative Costs Are Higher, Not Lower, Than for Private Insurance.” In short, because each Medicare claim is for a much higher amount than each private insurance claim, the percent of the dollar amount of total claims for mostly fixed administrative costs is lower in Medicare. If considered, instead, on administrative cost per number of claims processed, Medicare’s admin costs are higher than in private insurance. The former head of Medicare and Medicaid and former US assistant secretary of health recently, similarly, took on this administrative cost myth in the Wall Street Journal, asking and answering “Is Government Health Insurance Cheap?”
