Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, October 6. 2007Grilling a burger tonight? The largest frozen burger patty company in the US has folded after massive recall. Just looking at that burger machine is sickening enough. Meanwhile, if you wait long enough, maybe everything will be recalled. Friday, October 5. 2007Over 60?
You might be a candidate for The Purpose Prize. 60 isn't old anymore. They could have made it 70.

Monday, September 10. 2007Rebellion against US News college rankings
It's about time. Those rankings turn college "quality" into a dumb horse race, entirely overlooking what might be the best schools for a given kid. Schools have identities and a wide variety of different strengths and weaknesses, none of which can be captured in a ranking any more than you can rank individual people on overall "quality."

Wednesday, August 1. 2007Politics, Poetics, and FaithA re-post from over a year and a half ago: "With so much being written by the Left and the Right side of politics on the subject of Faith and Legislation, Judgeships and War, I have found some interesting essays and a 20 year old homily given by newly elected Pope Benedict XVI covering the topics discussed in the Congressional corridors, blogosphere, campuses, and in the homes of concerned citizens. These men, leaders in their fields of poetry, philosophy and religion, comment and forewarn of the dangers of men who tread on the domain of the Highest Power and whose thoughts of glory can at times lead Humanity into the Abyss from which it cannot escape. When kids sit in a History classroom learning about the Age of Antiquity and say," why do we need to learn this? It is so old." The teacher answers back, "because we cannot learn from our mistakes if we do not revisit them." Well, at least that is what I remember saying." From Czeslaw Milosz:
From Pope Benedict XVl:
From Richard Rowe, in Tolerance (1930):
And again from Czeslaw Milosz, from a letter written to English poet Stephen Barker:

Saturday, June 16. 2007The House that Golf BuiltPhotos of Tiger Woods' home in the islands. Ain't talent, discipline, and determination a wonderful combination for fulfilling one's dreams, whatever they may be? For Tiger, clearly, one part of the dream is comfortable shelter. This pad has nothing in common with Maggie's Farm except that both have indoor plumbing.

LuckyThis photo shows an unfortunate situation a driver found himself in: Look at the first picture above and you can see where this guy broke through the guard rail (right side where the people are standing on the road). His truck left the road, traveling from right to left. He flipped end-over-end, across the culvert outlet and landed on the left side of it. Now look at the 2nd picture (story confirmed via Snopes):

Risk TelevisionRisk management in the financial world is evolving into an entirely new, specialized, highly-paid profession, akin to that of actuaries. "Internet television developer Mash Networks launched Risk Television, a network devoted to financial risk management research and news. The stars of this network are analysts, investment bankers and members of the Federal Reserve, who give video interviews on topics such as enterprise risk management, risk assessment and operational risk case studies. Mash Networks also operates Sox Television, devoted to study of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act."
