Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, April 9. 2007Ivy Admissions
From a piece in the NYT: A Great Year for Ivy League Schools, but Not So Good for Applicants to Them - New York Times Is this article bad news for very bright and scholarly-minded kids? I don't think so. There are lots of interesting colleges which will give you an Ivy education or better - for far less money, and still don't stoop to taking every applicant who can pay the bill. I like Berea, which is on my mind today. Friday, March 30. 2007A great charityAs an amateur-expert on charities, here's a very interesting one which is worth looking at: Kiva - Loans that change lives. Their concept is right, because every little new business has a ripple effect that magnifies and spreads wealth. The NYT's Kristoff video report (quite remarkable) on Kiva is here.

Thursday, October 26. 2006Illegal ImmigrationThis came in over the transom, but I see it referenced here: FROM A RETIRED SDPD Officer now living in Pennsylvania: Continue reading "Illegal Immigration" Monday, October 2. 2006The Latin Beat: More Hugo-bashingHugo Chavez is truly a character of the times. He has a way of letting MSM capture his ranting and ravings and put them on the airwaves and now he duping the Venezuelan public into believing the United States is going to send agents to assassinate him. I think he has gone off the deep end and is in need of psychiatric attention immediately before someone or some nation actually gets hurt. What really bothers me is that the Venezuelan populace is unable or unwilling to do anything about having a mad man for a leader. Hugo although a laughingstock around most parts of the globe does have his followers since his money is very petrol good. What are the Americans to do? I think we should just watch and wait because he should blow himself up within time, and by all accounts it may happen sooner than later and then maybe we should call Austin Powers to the scene. After all Hugo is becoming one big joke! Now he is saying that the US wants to assassinate him. Doubtful - he's not important enough. Speaking of Venezuela, we have finally added two Venez. blogs to our blogroll: Venezuela News and Views, and The Devil's Excrement.

Friday, August 25. 2006Kudos for Maggie's Farm, from Fidel
My Dear Generale Bird Dog,
Kudos for an excellent blog. I read it twice daily, before I brush my teeth in the morning, and before I go to bed with my most recent proletarian Yes, the girls cheer me up. How would you like a visit from Hugo or Raul on your death bed? Would that cheer you up? No. Or old Mrs. Castro? With her old lady smell? And her Bible and rosary? God forbid! You raise the level of discussion of the entire blogosphere, with wit, intelligence, and cultivation. And you keep my kind of people thinking, instead of stultifying in the coffin of dead ideas and dead theories. We leaders must be stimulated, but, alas, we cannot allow the People to get confused! Keep up the good work. You capitalists have such humor! I wish we could afford it. But please, amigo - just three minor criticisms: Too many Jesus pictures - it reminds me of my blessed mother, God rest her soul. More babes instead, please, to distract us from the subject of age and death. And how come no baseball commentary? And, lastly, how come no stock tips? You Yanquis know the score, but my Swiss bankers were behind the S&P last year, not even including fees! And my hedge funds did great, but after fees, and after your terrible US short-term capital gains taxes, I hardly kept up with inflation! Sheesh. Thanks a ton, Hugo, Thesesa, Cindy, and Hillary, for the necessary introductions to your hedgie friends - I might as well have had a proletarian Vanguard tax-exempt fund! And my "pal" Georgie Soros can ---- me for his after-tax gains! He is a burro and a closet capitalist pig, masquerading as an internationalist socialist! With warmest personal socialist regards from beautiful Cuba, (where the sunshine is from Fidel, the hurricanes are from Bush, the cigars are great, freedom is just a bourgeois indulgence, and the money is from, wait, where? Oh, there isn't any for them, but why do the People need money if they're happy? Free medical care from Your amigo, PS. Still waiting for that next Viagra shipment from the States, the large WalMart package. I have left orders to leave it all in my coffin, just in case. Not to worry - Raul will send you the cigars via Mexico. Haha. Like Freud? Sometimes a good one is worth a Cuban cigar? Viva WalMart. The price is right. PPS: Are you sure you can sneak me into Sloan-Kettering if I need to go? You have a certain connection? Are you sure they have priests there? It doesn't matter to me, but it matters to my beloved countrymen. I think I might need a good Jewish doctor, and all we have are these glorifed Russian nurses that call themselves "Dr.," and shake so much they give you the creeps. Rum and tequila. If they drink rum at breakfast, they settle down and seem OK, but it's not exactly New York medicine, and Raul says they are 40 years out of date, but what does he know? Their medicines expired in 1972, but its free! Heck, it's good enough for The Little People! But they are ignorant! Thank God! If they got the internets, we'd be SCREWED!

It seems the Mid East and Asia are not the only worries for the mighty US, no me thinks I smell more than one ratoncito in Latin America. Thursday, June 29. 2006The Latin Beat: Mexican ElectionsAmericans should be informed on the election in Mexico because the outcome there will be felt on our borders and in our cities. The Immigrant Diaspora is directly related to the economic hardship felt by the Mexicans who view "Coming to America" as their families only chance for survival. Americans can look to Venezuela and Bolivia as examples for what will lie ahead should the Populist candidate Obrador be elected.
New York Cosmo - for the week-end. Nobody can have just one CosmoThe New York Cosmopolitan - very, very good, and healthy, too. Make it, pour it in the vodka bottle and put it in the freezer and then take it over to the party. The recipe is very easy. Yes, we prefer it with Rose's instead of fresh lime.

Yes, you heard right, Mr. Chavez will be extracting as much money as he can and from whomever he can and he will be extracting it right over to the City of Extraction also known as Geneva. Thursday, March 23. 2006The Latin Beat: Chomsky on ChavezA glance at the current issue of the International Socialist Review: Noam Chomsky on Latin America. I don't know what authority Chomsky possess beyond that of any ordinary blogger, but these comments aren't his usual loony rants. (The article, "Latin America at the Tipping Point," is not online. Information about the magazine is available on its Web site.)
Monday, March 20. 2006The Latin Beat: Chavez UpdateChavez continues his charming ways: terms Bush "donkey" and "drunkard." And he continues to destroy Venezuela and there seems no end in sight. The Bridge finally collapses! "Today the bridge has collapsed, cutting the only access to modernity, to progress. The fallen bridge however is symbolic of the current state of Venezuela vis-a-vis the rest of the world. Hugo Chavez built a bridge to Havana; a second to the FARC-controlled mountains of Colombia; the third to the Foro de Sao Paulo HQs and then another to Tehran, the rest he burnt."The symbolism of Venezuela's collapsed bridge | www.vcrisis.com There is more on this sad tale hereThe Devil's Excrement . Wednesday, January 11. 2006The Latin BeatHow many Cuban spies are there in America? It will be hard to find out since we are not to engage in eavesdropping. I suppose we have to wait a couple of decades before we find out. "A Florida college professor and his wife, a university administrator, face charges that they acted as covert agents for Cuba's communist regime for more than two decades.Florida Professor, Wife Spied for Cuba For Decades, an Indictment Alleges - January 10, 2006 - The New York Sun - NY Newspaper 2005 was a very bad year for democracy in Latin America. Hugo Chavez has managed to inspire and influence more than one nation to follow in his footsteps and I believe a lot of it has to do with bribes. He has a great deal of money and oil at his disposal and he is buying as many governments as he can. In Bolivia, Peru and Nicaragua, he has had success and he his Castro alliance is being felt in Argentina as well. Read more on the Latin American Annus Horrendus here:FrontPage magazine.com :: A Latin Crisis by Lt. Col. Gordon Cucullu Saturday, December 17. 2005The Mighty Kong Saw it last night and although Ms. Yazel's timeline A Timely Guide To 'King Kong' For the Fidgety is simplistic, it is a helpful guide for taking bathroom and concession stand breaks. King Kong, the story of beauty over beast is back in a BIG way and Peter Jackson has paid tribute to the Old Hollywood by using today's special effects with yesterday's comedy and drama and film for entertainment's sake attitude. Is it too long? You bet it is, and you will also need to suspend your level of disbelief when Kong races through the jungle swinging Naomi Watts (the beauty character) like a Barbie who in real life would have had every bone in her body broken and face crushed. Likewise when Jack Black (Carl the spineless movie producer, there's one in every bunch) and the rest of the rescue group are seen running for their lives as Brontosauruses stampede over them, run past them and on every which way around them and yet, most will survive to go on and on and on until some other prehistoric creature bites. Oh yes and I forgot to mention the gruesome cannibals but I recommend you stay sit in your seat and go with it. This is a movie worth seeing on the big screen but you may want to leave the kiddies at home.

The Latin Beat: Mexico The Wall came tumblin' down? President Fox is concerned about the rights of immigrants. Which immigrants is the part I don't understand? Are they the illegal immigrants fleeing his country and running across the US borders or is it the illegal immigrants fleeing our country and running across the Mexican borders? There has been a lot of press about this topic lately and there will be much more to be sure. Discussion is important, conversation is grand, dissension has its place but ignorance is best when it comes to immigration policy here in the US. President Fox should be working on why Mexico cannot take care of its millions of citizens instead of showing indignation. Read more here: "Concerned about the huge numbers of illegal immigrants streaming across the border and worried it could be an entry point for terrorists, a U.S. lawmaker has proposed building two parallel steel and wire fences running from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Coast. But Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has said a wall running the length of a border would cost too much. Mexico has expressed indignation at the idea. Fox, speaking in Tamaulipas state across the border from Texas, said such extreme security measures would violate immigrants' rights.US News Article | Reuters.com
