Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Thursday, June 8. 2006Zarquawi LinksJust a few notes and links. First, at the press conference it was observed that the Iraqi press cheered and clapped and the American press were silent. Second, Dr Sanity looks at the "reality-based" reaction to the news: they are clearly not pleased. Third, Nicholas Berg's dad is "sad" Zarquawi had to die. Blames Bush for the beheading of his son. Glad that isn't my Dad. Fourth, a statement by Al Quaida:
Hmmm. For once, I see things the same way as them. And finally, as some good blogger noted (I forget who), no words of sadness yet from Michael Moore on the loss of another heroic Minuteman. Thursday Morning LinksThe return of Patches generates hate mail against RI GOP. Surely that makes good sense. The science behind the swerve of the Adidas World Cup ball. BBC Louis Gottschalk. From a book review in the NYSun: "When he died in 1868, Louis Moreau Gottschalk was the most famous musician in the Western hemisphere." An early rock star, living an interesting life in interesting times. NY Sun Skinvisible kills avian flu on contact. There's an investment idea. Romney on abortion: Let the states decide. We agree. Sperm from older guys: It isn't as good. Science Daily Al Gore definitely into Green: His current finances. Forbes A nice nest egg, for a politician. Enviros split on wind power. We think wind power is ridiculous, and destructive, and a dumb feel-good thing that kills birds and bats. NYT Top 22 states for tooth loss. Haha. Could have guessed. Slower Pace. Yes, W Va wins! The past five years have been our 1930s. But we are learning. Dinocrat The missing tape of Pablo Neruda is finally found. WaPo Two opinions on the Bilbray election: Rick Moran says it doesn't mean much. Kesler thinks it means a lot. Am. Thinker accurately predicted that if Busby won, the MSM would play it up, but if Busby lost, the story would be bured as meaningless.

Wednesday, June 7. 2006Weds. Morning Links, including squid recipe
How Evil are you? Quite evil, no doubt. Take the test. h/t, RTLC A fine piece re D-Day yesterday, at The Shelf. They used approx. the same photo we did: stirring photo, because you can feel yourself on the landing craft, having to get off. Jihadist predicted how they will defeat the West. Thus far, quite accurate. And Rightly So. the problem with the West is that we assume other cultures are as rational and civilized as we are. Guess again. Innocence can be suicidal. Repealing the Estate Tax forever is a good idea. It won't happen, though - for no good reason. Prof B. is on the story. Why is it a good idea to get rid of it? Because the tax is anti-family, pro-govt dependency, and because it damages family businesses. The mega-rich guys all get around it, which is why the Kennedys and Rockefellers are still rich, but the kids of the dairy farmer down the road had to sell his 200 year-old family farm because in MA the land is worth about 5 million now, and the kids didn't have a spare 2 million to pay the estate tax. Not to mention the fact that it represents double-taxation. I'd like to see every American family accumulate enough wealth to be independent of govt "largesse", in time. Things that the newspaper isn't telling you: Not only is a superb economy benefitting the entire country (blue states the least - no surprise there, because they tend to discourage growth), but industrial orders continue to put pressure on manufacturing. Powerline How's the fishin? Daily (almost) updates on Long Island Sound fishing - always here. Apparently the squid didn't like all the rain. Maybe I knew people jigged for squid, but forgot. I do like to eat them, but not fried like the Italians eat them -that's like fish-flavored chewing gum. Very lightly sauteed in butter, olive oil, and garlic, then add a bit of white wine, parsley and hot pepper flakes or Tabasco - a perfect appetizer, or a great topping for spaghetti. Never overcook squid, because it gets rubbery fast.

Home schooling as a lifestyle choice. NYT The US would be just fine without immigrant labor. NYT Opinion The anti-Chavez backlash in South America. That didn't take long. WaPo How to be a post-modernist in 2 easy steps. Humbug Dan at A Slower Pace is trying to make his life more sane. Monday, June 5. 2006A Woman's PlaceThis piece came in over the transom: Barbara Walters of Television's 20/20 did a story on gender roles in
Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked 5 paces behind their husbands. She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. From Ms. Walter's vantage point, despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to walk even further back behind their husbands and are happy to maintain the old custom. Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?" The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation, said, "Land Mines." Reagan died two years ago, todayMid-Morning LinksBorder-cams. Monitored by anyone! There's an idea. The Toronto Star cannot figure out what these guys have in common. Maybe they're just mixed up kids? The Toronto Bomb - how big? Great White North What's your opinion? Did she say that illegals can vote?

Monday Morning Links![]() Academic frauds. RWN covers the subject here. What pompous morons. But how can they enter reality, if they remain in lala land? And student idiots. Can anyone imagine an 18 year-old turning in his teacher for this? DO NOT hire this guy - too dumb for life. This kid has clearly been TAUGHT by the nice teacher - but he cannot LEARN. And he is no gentleman. Loonies complain about circus elephants. Please! Who wouldn't want to be a circus elephant? It's a good gig. See no evil. The Clinton administration, Al Quaida, and Able Danger. Front Page. CARS. This movie is going to be big. Adults will need to find some kid as an excuse to go. Trailer here. Dr. Sanity takes a look at the narcissism of politics, and the corruption which grows from it. Makes sense to me. Media terror against the USA: noDNC figured out why they do it. Inconvenient truths: Terrorist arrests ignored. Ace Do not look. Some disgusting and entirely tasteless photos from Maggie's Farm fan and Lansing radio host Rich Michaels.

Saturday, June 3. 2006Duck Eats AlienIs this news? It's like Dog Bites Man. Of That's why we see so few inter-galactic aliens around, these days. And so many fat ducks. It's a no-brainer: the ducks are obviously eating up all of the aliens - because of Bush. It doesn't take a scientist to put 1 and 1 together. What do you expect the ducks to eat? MacDonalds? Poached salmon with dill sauce? Oysters Rockefeller? They do not seem to have taken to eating illegal aliens quite yet: give them time to adjust to the jalapeno and cilantro flavors, and they will gobble them up, too. Image: North America's flamboyant but blood-thirsty Wood Duck, fattened on alien flesh. Friday, June 2. 2006Friday Morning Links
Sager at RCP calls it Cultural Federalism, but I call it plain Federalism - and I like it. Why "cultural" issues ought to be left to the states. We are a big country - why not? That giant sucking sound is the sound of local power getting sucked into DC, and it never quits. Moms want to drive SUVs. Most popular was the Escalade. That's a wierd choice, a bit of a pimpmobile, but who understands Moms? Nobody, except maybe other Moms. Why is American medical care so expensive? Kling has the answer, and anybody who has ever had $10,000 worth of tests for a simple complaint knows that he is right: American physicians are test-addicted, partly out of fear of lawsuits and partly because they are spoiled by technology and leave judgement behind. Only in America will a dizzy spell buy you an MRI. Good piece by Kling - worth a whole post. Did I miss something? When was Huck Finn banned from America's public schools? Powerline. May I ask why? Have they banned Moby Dick yet? White guys try to kill a nice little whale in that tale. What are they reading now? Maya Angelou and Mao's Little Red Book, no doubt. The Librarian/academic "community" confuses me...they want unlimited porn and gay sex education in second grade, but they ban Mark Twain and the Bible. What am I missing? If you live in LA, you are paying for this. Wizbang. Suckers!
