 Wow. It is quite wonderful, in a way, in Yankeeland. 103 in our CT valley.
Enjoy it, luxuriate in it. Complaining is for babies. Pretend to be a wisteria vine, reaching for the sun, or one of those giant patches of happy, heat-intoxicated crabgrass in my lawn. Watch those Beefsteak tomatoes in the garden turn redder by the day. In January, you will pay good money to travel to such temperatures and blue skies. We'll only have this kind of astonishing heat for a couple of more days. If I didn't have a case coming up, I'd call this a pool, book, nap, and gin and tonic day. Throw a few of those giant ice blocks in the pool, and float on them like a Polar Bear. Got the grandkids coming this weekend, so the iceman cometh. And, to all of you greenies - please turn off your a/c in your cars, homes, and workplaces. You are destroying the planet. If you turn it on, you are a fraud and a hypocrite. Do not tell me, like Al Gore, that he needs his but you can't have yours. I promise you that his house on his tobacco farm in Tennessee has a/c. And if your workplace refuses, stand out front today with signs and protest that your workplace is killing Gaia with its wasteful a/c. It'll be a big hit: you will be popular and folks will thank you for having the courage to stand up for Gaia. Be a hero, and try it!

A few interesting pieces: First, from this new piece by Jimmy Carter, a man who has always been in utter denial of evil and detructiveness in the world and the easiest con target on earth. He blames the war on Bush (wasn't it great the way the "Peace Process" worked before Bush?): The general parameters of a long-term, two-state agreement are well known. There will be no substantive and permanent peace for any peoples in this troubled region as long as Israel is violating key U.N. resolutions, official American policy and the international "road map" for peace by occupying Arab lands and oppressing the Palestinians. Except for mutually agreeable negotiated modifications, Israel's official pre-1967 borders must be honored. As were all previous administrations since the founding of Israel, U.S. government leaders must be in the forefront of achieving this long-delayed goal. A major impediment to progress is Washington's strange policy that dialogue on controversial issues will be extended only as a reward for subservient behavior and will be withheld from those who reject U.S. assertions. Direct engagement with the Palestine Liberation Organization or the Palestinian Authority and the government in Damascus will be necessary if secure negotiated settlements are to be achieved.
All I can say is this: if these terrorist guys were calm, rational, and humane, the problem would have been solved by Jimmy Carter himself - if not by Nixon. No need to read it all - the guy is in LalaLand. He had his chance, and he kissed Yasir Arafat. Decades later, he still wants to drop love bombs. Second, Tracinski at RCP, asks "If the Iranian strategy is so clear, why can't we deal with it?" Damn good question. Everyone knows that Iran is using Hezbollah's war in Lebanon to distract attention from its nuclear weapons program. The Iranians were given a July 5 deadline to suspend uranium enrichment or face "serious consequences." The contemptuous Iranians declared that they wouldn't reply for another six weeks, on August 22. Then Hezbollah--a wholly-owned subsidiary of Iran's Revolutionary Guards--initiated their war in Lebanon, and no one has paid attention to the Iranian nuclear program for the past three weeks. Now, finally, we are sending a new resolution to the UN Security Council--giving Iran until August 31 to agree to talks or face another months-long debate about whether we will impose sanctions against them. The Iranian strategy to buy time is utterly transparent and not especially clever. It is simple to defeat: declare that Hezbollah's aggression against Israel is proof of Iran's evil intentions and that we don't require any further diplomatic justification to bomb Iran's nuclear sites and bring down its regime. Instead, Western leaders fell for the Iranian strategy, and the Iranians have pretty much gotten what they wanted.
Third, a quote from Dershowitz in The Front Page: Sunday was a day of great triumph for Hezbollah. Its tactics had worked. By launching rockets at Israeli civilians within yards of a building filled with refugees, Hezbollah had induced Israel to make a terrible mistake. Its defensive rocket had missed the Hezbollah launchers and hit the civilian building. That was Hezbollah’s plan all along. As Israelis wept in grief over the deaths of the Lebanese children, Hezbollah leaders celebrated its propaganda victory. Yes, Hezbollah was happy that an Israeli rocket had killed Lebanese children. The children were now in paradise, martyrs to Hezbollah’s cause. Israel was being condemned throughout the world for “killing” children—“massacre” was the most common word used in the Arab media. The Israelis apologized, but that was not enough to put out the flames of anger or to quiet the shrill calls for revenge.

Hurricanes: The problem is people building and living too close to the coast. Duh. NYT At Maggie's Farm, we oppose any new Federally-subsidized flood insurance. It's stupid: we subsidize people to live in flood zones, then have to pay to rescue them from floods and hurricanes and to rebuild in the same place. Only govt could be that dumb. But it's not their money, is it? Could be some truth to this, from piece in The Guardian: Another Hizbullah leader hinted that the group had not expected such a ferocious response from Israel, as previous border incidents have usually played out in low-key fashion.
The more I think about it, the more I suspect that they wanted to create a little border scuffle as a diversion from Iran, and did not count on a strong reaction from an Israel who was feeling cornered and beseiged - and fed up with the fact that, with every concession, their enemies just move closer. I'll sign it, but. The debate about "signing statments." Opinion in the NY Sun No free lunch. Either permit drilling, or pay more for Arab and Venezuelan gas, and quit complaining. I have two friends who have lost relatives on mountains. The risk and challenge is the deal. You can chose to sit home and watch TV. Someone else who wonders why an Israel cease-fire would be a good idea: Bolton. As the Wash. Times commentary puts it: As Ben Stein recently put it, "God bless Eretz Israel. God bless Israel for having the [courage] to stand up for herself." But supporters of freedom and democracy must also say a prayer for President Bush, who has steadfastly stood up for Israel. He outright refuses to publicly ask Israel to stand down.
As expected, France, Spain and Italy have responded to recent events with pacifist posturing. In the smoking rooms of Western Europe and around the coffee tables of the United Nations, we hear more lofty calls for restraint. But the terrorist groups that started this fight have shown no restraint. Rather than pull back, Israel should move forward, cleaning out all the terrorist sanctuaries, training camps, weapons caches and missile systems it can find.
Remember, Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon and Gaza. Later, when terrorist gangs kidnapped Israeli soldiers, Israel appropriately fought back. That is what sovereign nations do, and Israel's recent military actions deserve our unyielding support. Israel has the right to put the terrorist armies of Hezbollah and Hamas out of business.
Krauthammer agrees. So does Gingrich: Not the time for restraint. But, on the other hard, David Clark in The Guardian wants Israel to give up even more land...probably all of it. They will not: It's high time western governments grasped the fundamental truth that Israel is pursuing an agenda that conflicts directly with their own. In the context of the fight against terrorism and the need to promote international cooperation, the west's interest must be to remove the Palestinian question as a source of grievance among mainstream Muslims in a way that guarantees justice for the Palestinians and security for Israel. A settlement of this kind is perfectly feasible and has been outlined in countless documents and initiatives over the years, most recently in the Geneva accords. But the main reason it has proved illusive is that Israel is not, and never has been, prepared to make the territorial compromises required. It still believes that it is entitled to the victor's spoils by annexing large tracts of Palestinian land.
That's a perfect example of a guy who preaches appeasement, and would be pleased to see Israel an Arab nation - but who is too naive, (maybe) to acknowledge that these people would just find another scapegoat for their mess.

Dr. E's son heard a rumor that the army is moving MLRS (multiple launch rockets) from Golan to Leb border; today, my realtor had to leave early to get ready for his call-up tonight - tanks being moved to Leb border. MLRS have never been used by Israel: they rain steel. The Air Force dropped pamphlets over areas of southern Lebanon warning citizens to leave certain areas as these will be bombed. M. said that MLRS is a serious move towards war.
In Tel aviv today to meet with realtor and seller about apt in Jer. We were on the 16th floor, watching the horizon. Hezbollah had threatened to hit Azraeli towers at dusk (when radar doesn't work as well). An empty threat.
I feel safe, but unsettled. I sent you (I think) my account of the walk with D. before his deployment north. These Arabs are not worth the death of a single Jew.
The shelters have been opened here. I rather do not want to be cooped up with the people in the merkaz klita.
I've been asked to go north tomorrow to work with olim hadashim in safed and such; not sure this will take place. tomorrow evening, have been asked to run group meeting for oilim in Ra'anana.
Ironically, Jerusalem is one of the safer places to be -- for a change.
Hope to have my soldier book off to press by end of month (I have minor surgery July 28). Meeting with the artist, I hope, on thursday. Look forward to starting the Jacob and Joseph book. Also have a paper on dreams and another paper that I have left sitting for some time.
I don't think this war will last too long: the Israelis are doing too well and the U.N. doesn't tolerate that.
We have much to be proud of. At dinner last night, the yiddish-speaking guest described his father's activites in the concentration camps; I thought of my father's sad attempts to smuggle food and an occassional bullet into the ghetto. Jews need to be strong first. And forever. Editor's note: Sounds like it's all going as predicted by our news here in the US. And it's nice to have most of the Islamic nations on Israel's side, for once. Perhaps sanity is sinking in? Someone has to take out the garbage. Including Ahmadinejad, whose lovely comments today are here and here.
