We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
There is no target. Just fishing for dirt anywhere they can find some or induce some to justify their existence. That is not the American version of law enforcement. Anyway, the Russia thing seems to have been left behind. Russia dirt seems to lead only to the Clintons.
“The growth of the Internet will slow drastically, as the flaw in ‘Metcalfe’s law’—which states that the number of potential connections in a network is proportional to the square of the number of participants—becomes apparent: most people have nothing to say to each other! By 2005 or so, it will become clear that the Internet’s impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine’s.”
Call them self-employed, or gig workers, or outside contractors if you want. People who get no paychecks or job benefits.
For people who value independence and being their own boss, the price paid in uncertainty, lack of external structure, and anxiety, is worth it. There is nothing new about this. If you are a plumber with a truck you are a gig worker. So is a guy with a barbershop.
Facebook now admits that it is behaving more like a publisher, with an editorial view, than a neutral platform where users get to choose what they read. Its head of news partnerships has said that Facebook now has a “point of view” on the news, while Zuckerberg himself says that Facebook, not its users, will now determine what counts as a “quality” news source.
...
It is not as if news publications can go elsewhere. Facebook, with 2 billion users, has no serious competitor in social media. Other methods of distributing news on the internet are inferior, rapidly declining, or else controlled by one of the other tech giants, whose track record of arbitrary rule-changes is as bad as Facebook’s.
At Powerline re economic inequality, "... the 400 richest Americans control more wealth than the poorest 80 million households, and “the richest citizens continue to capture the lion’s share of new wealth."
It is an absurd discussion, because the only way wealth can be "captured" is by theft, fraud, or taxation. The zero-sum fallacy is there, as usual. Still, the best solution to extreme statistical inequality suggested there would be to confiscate the assets of the top 400, or 1000, or 10,000, or 100,000, and to ship those people to New Zealand or Tasmania just in case they might be tempted to try to get rich again in the US.
When rid of the richest, you can begin to go after the kulaks. After a while, there is nobody left to tax and economic equality ensues (except for our Leaders, of course - some pigs are more equal than others). It's great. No, it's awesome.
The guy may be an obnoxious amoral jerk with bad taste, no verbal filter and lacking in any deep curiosity, but consider what he has done and is doing and don't be a snob. Good instincts beat deep knowledge every time. Facing down the Chinese, North Koreans, and Russians, pushing back against Mexican invasion, growing jobs like crazy, lowering taxes, and driving the Left mad. Food stamp, "disability", and welfare numbers are going down fast. All good things for America. Keeping his promises as best he can. MAGA.
Hillary: America in a really bad spot. Really? I don't see that. She still does not get that many people voted for the lesser of two evils. Also, that many voted for him because he is fearless. He didn't need the job. He is doing remarkably well as an amateur, and his polls reflect that.
I'll vote for him next time, if he is willing to bother with more of this annoying and thankless job. My (Massachusetts "working class" Democrat) parents have come to admire him for what he has been doing despite his style not being their cup of tea.
Steyn womders why millions of reputable Americans are spending hours going through immigration etc on every international flight home, when anyone from anywhere can just walk across the Rio Grande:
"Sorting yourself out is harder than you think." It's just a good chat about foolish youth who want to save the world. Peterson is right. It's adolescent narcissism.
Several gals I know read this book to understand how (many) men function. They want to be man-savvy and particularly predator-savvy.
It seems like a how-to book for guys who have been disappointed in their romantic or simply sexual pursuits. Some guys are luckier than others. Some guys are chick magnets, and they are not all tall, dark (or orange), and handsome.
It's not just rich and powerful guys who decide to give their instincts free rein. It's not just guys, either.
Interesting to me that nobody needs to write books for women about how to get appealing males into bed. It just comes naturally to them.
