We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I got to thinking yesterday. That's always a mistake. I'm not a clear thinker, being human and all. But I had to look at the news media a bit, to find links for you fine folks, and it got me ruminating. Since there was nothing but bad news, I renamed the process "doominating."
There's nothing but impending doom in the news. Not actual doom in the regular news. The regular news has shifted 180 degrees since they pitched the mean tweeter out on his ear, and muzzled him. Everything's fine now. No matter how not fine the news is, it's fine to them. They still find doom, of course. It's over there behind the invisible 800-pound gorillas.
The purpose of aggregators like Maggie's Farm is to collate an alternative slate of information for people looking for interest or entertainment outside the usual bubble of daily life. It's a kind of magazine, not a newspaper. Magazines have themes. Everywhere I went yesterday, looking for stuff, it was nothing but doom, doom, doom. There are two alternate sets of doom, but it's all doom. My version of Maggie's theme gets harder and harder to cobble together, because I don't really like posting doom drivel and exclaiming harrumph.
It occurs to me that the doom fetish means the average American likes doom. They like being told the world will end, and yesterday to boot. They like movies about apocalypse and TV shows about the dead wandering the earth and munching on the straphangers. The average Joe is getting their jollies by wallowing in their own little doomworld. What is Twitter but an IV drip of doom?
So it's incumbent on me to apologize (again) if the articles I collate aren't depressing enough to make you happy. I'm being as dour as I can, but I can't seem to keep up.
I'm fairly certain the the substance described isn't technically "lumber." Lumber qua lumber is cut up timber. The stuff in the article is "manufactured lumber." Why yes, I'm lots of fun at parties, why do you ask?
Got that? To dweebs at the Economist, and the central banks, if regular people have any money, it's "missing."
Yes, I've noticed that places like Switzerland keep churning out citizens who need a hockey helmet to ride the bus. It would explain a lot about Denver Bronco fans, though.
I love listening to people clutching an iPhone, sitting next to an Alexa on their couch, complaining about privacy. I have weird hobbies, I guess. And shades on my windows.
An elephant's brain weighs 10 pounds. An elephant can't even dial an iPhone, or plug in an Alexa, so you're going to ask the ants different questions, research guy.
Remember, guns don't kill people -- gun control advocates kill people
I believe this problem has previously been solved, as the Fed owns everything already.
Oh, great. I'm no meteorologist, but I've been pluvial once, after an ill-advised trip to Chipotle, so I'm warning you: If you live in Pangea, you better be prepping for a tougher winter than usual.
On today's episode of "Confuse a Cat"...
To paraphrase the usual media headline: Wuhan chimera experiments proven; minorities, women, and Zachriel hardest hit.
Have a great Friday, everyone!

Anchorites: Medieval Women And Men Walled Up Alive
For those of you who need to raise your blood pressure. . . .
The climate disaster is here – this is what the future looks like
the idea that a group of people is smarter than the smartest person in the group is purest BS. In any emergency, the group has the judgement and smarts of its stupidest, most dithering member. Otherwise, why would we ever think leadership was a useful skill?
I've been making an effort to improve my overall mental wellbeing in recent months. Two of the steps: consume less caffeine, and stay off of Yahoo! News.
I'm feeling better.
A hive mind can keep everybody moving in the same purposeful direction, but that doesn't make it a beneficial feature.

NIH acknowledges US funded gain-of-function at Wuhan lab, despite Fauci’s denials
That doesn't appear to be the case, based on the NIH letter at the center of the story.
• The letter notes that the research does not relate to SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19.
• The letter notes that the research plan did not meet the criteria of research involving "enhanced pathogens of pandemic potential," so did not meet the definition of a gain of function in the guidelines.
• The researchers tested a spike protein from a naturally occurring bat coronavirus on mice genetically modified with a human receptor. The result was sicker mice. This also doesn't meet the definition of gain of function in the guidelines.
• The researchers were required to report this finding, but failed to do so.
• We'll know more when the data is available.
Mike Anderson: the idea that a group of people is smarter than the smartest person in the group is purest BS.
But leaders don't work in isolation. Groups interact at many different levels of organization, and good leaders tap into the knowledge and abilities of others. That doesn't mean group intelligence can't fail. It can and does sometimes fail. But, at its best, the group can exhibit far more intelligence than any single individual. Just consider human civilization, which is the accumulation of knowledge across society and accumulated through generations.

While the letter notes the researchers were testing spike proteins from naturally occurring viruses, the letter leaves open the possibility that they were creating chimeras for testing. If so, and because the mice got sicker, then that could be considered a gain of function, even if unintentional. Regardless, it should have been reported at the time.
Deny, deny, deny! Obfuscate, change the subject, blame Trump.
Why? Why not discuss things honestly and openly? Simple answer; because fraud, corruption, and hidden agenda's.
The left lurched lefter in the 80's, 90's and with Bush II and Obama. They lurched right into communism. We better understand this and act to stop them and reverse this trend. They intend to dominate you and the country and destroy if they must to achieve their goals of full power and taking all the wealth... YOUR wealth.
In this drama Zach serves the left BUT Zach also serves normal people too. That is if Zach comments/argues/provides proof THEN you know that Zach is covering up and gas lighting you.
I took a swatter to Twitter, and I feel SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better!
Brian Laundrie found dead. Talking heads continue to attack Laundries parents. They dislike that fact that his parents lawyered up and then turn around and attack them for anything they say or do. The irony there is that proves they need a lawyer AND they need to say nothing and not cooperate. Remember this anytime the police take an interest in you; shut up, say nothing don't help them, don't give up your rights and lawyer up. The media is not your friend, they love making stuff up and interpreting your every action in the worst possible way. Ask George Zimmerman.
Many seem to have forgotten the simplest and most effective way to avoid the doom-mongering, vulgarity, propagandizing, and triviality that pervade the "entertainment" and social media worlds: Just ignore them. No TV, no movies, no Facebag, no Twitter. Real life and our civilizational inheritance, properly understood, are full of interest and inspiration. Read a book, explore the work of a composer new to you, do something for another person--or just be nice to them for no reason, take a walk in the woods, do something useful or that makes your home or environment more beautiful. It is easy enough to keep up with significant developments in our Nation and the world without bathing in electronic sewage every day.
We now have an International Pronoun Day. Let's understand that people who are confused if they are a boy or a girl are mentally ill. Functional, if they live their lives without committing crimes then no one cares. But do understand that this is abnormal and shouldn't be encouraged or revered. In fact it is good that they advertise their mental instability so that normal people can avoid them and ignore their rants and actions. It's kind of like the heavily tattooed or pink/blue hair or nose rings and other metal object sticking out of their bodies. They are telling you that they are mentally ill and stay away and expect them to act irrationally and irresponsibly. And MOST importantly don't let them force you to cater to their psychosis.
In government circles definitions have no meaning as the administrative state simply changes the meanings of words to meet their current dilemmas. I hardly have to give examples in the current pharma chaos but look how they change unemployment, inflation, or government funding cutback numbers or how the EPA defines navigable waters.
What is environmentalism except an apocalyptic doomsday cult? I remember when Rachael Carson came out with her book, "Silent Spring" and claimed insecticides were going to kill all the birds and give all of us cancer. She was a big liar.
Good point, you need both to succeed. Otherwise, it's the sound of one mob caudillo hand clappling.
Roger - when your reign as king of sicily ends, would you consider retiring to the jersey shore? I spend my days sipping cocktails, gazing out at the atlantic, listening to loza alexander rap songs and thanking God i'm not zachriel...no gloom in sight.
indyjonesouthere: In government circles definitions have no meaning as the administrative state simply changes the meanings of words to meet their current dilemmas.
Then, according to you, we can ignore the letter entirely.
OneGuy: Why? Why not discuss things honestly and openly?
It is being discussed openly.
OneGuy: The left lurched lefter in the 80's, 90's and with Bush II and Obama. They lurched right into communism.
Speaking of "definitions have no meaning." Bush II and Obama were hardly communists by any reasonable definition.
OneGuy: That is if Zach comments/argues/provides proof THEN you know that Zach is covering up and gas lighting you.
Ray: What is environmentalism except an apocalyptic doomsday cult?
Uh, a reasonable response to the environmental crisis.
Ray: I remember when Rachael Carson came out with her book, "Silent Spring" and claimed insecticides were going to kill all the birds and give all of us cancer.
Insecticides were killing birds and causing cancers. There are inevitable tradeoffs, but ignoring the problems don't make them go away.
"This ingenious wall could harness enough wind power..."
Read the article, nowhere does it state how many watts per square foot are produced, nor the capital cost per watt-hour.
Therefore, no way to compare it to any other technology, whether traditional or "green".
You can ignore Fauci, the CDC, FDA, and the NIH as they rely on admin state weasel words to evade criticism and accountability.
indyjonesouthere: You can ignore Fauci, the CDC, FDA, and the NIH as they rely on admin state weasel words to evade criticism and accountability.
The letter was from the Principal Deputy Director of the NIH, so we should ignore the letter?
I would point out that as a life long Bronco fan, at least I’m not a Browns fan, but then our old, cast off quarterback beat us last night. Ugh.
He's just another member of the admin state. It would only be a surprise if he confirmed the weaponization of Covid. Someone might be held accountable within the department if he didn't deny it. It is like believing Brennen in Russia, Russia, Russia.
since they were almost certainly accessories after the fact, lawyering up was the only solution.
Of course, that lead to the result that their kid was nailed by alligators, but, that's karma.
Or, they're breathing sighs of relief, as the cops can't sweat the kid to get him to roll on the parents.
Rachel Carson was the most effective mass murderer in history. Since the 1972 ban on DDT that she instigated, millions of children have died of Malaria.

Are you a member of the media, fw190? I'm just wondering because that's their MO - if you don't know the facts, just make it up out of thin air.
When I was a young officer, several military members (and one dependent) were murdered by CPP/NPA "sparrow teams" in the Philippines. I knew one of them, Col. James "Nick" Rowe. I was sent to determine what could be done after Senator J. James Exon sent a letter to the SECDEF. The chain of command did not like my report nor the letter I wrote for the DEPSECDEF to sign. What DOD sent to Senator Exon was BS. Never, ever trust what someone in the DC swamp says in a letter. I sent a copy of my original letter to my Congressman (who I had interned for in College) to protect myself. Point is, the government routinely lies.
Dear Mr. de hauteville:
Thank you for adding value as you bring links.
Julian of Norwich was a noted anchoress, and one whose writings are studied to this day.
If they actually broke the law then they should be charged and given a trial. As should Hillary Clinton and a couple hundred other Obama era Democrats. But if they didn't break any laws the media shouldn't be going for their throat. It's unseemly at best and may leave the talking heads open to being sued. I don't know what they knew or what they have done, but I suspect that they didn't know there was a murder until the news broke and they merely acted as parents. Remember that both of these young people were suffering mental health issues, most likely bi-polar so the parents have been dealing with their erratic actions since they were toddlers. So it wouldn't seem unusual that the two lovers had a quarrel or broke up or one returned without the other.
snopercod: Since the 1972 ban on DDT that she instigated, millions of children have died of Malaria.
That's a false attribution of causation. As Carson pointed out, mosquitoes were evolving resistance to DDT, so continued use of DDT, especially for widespread application in agricultural, was leading to DDT losing its effectiveness. And that is what happened.
See Davidson & Jackson, Insecticide Resistance in Mosquitoes, Nature 1961.
