We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Moss' hystrionic NYT article complained about food that panders to the human taste appeal of salty and sweet foods. Well, guess what - the human sense of taste is limited to sweet, salty, and bitter (and sour). So why didn't Moss complain about the pickles with the burger too? Or is sour OK with him?
Unsurprisingly, the appeal of fatty food is not taste, but textural and olfactory. However, as I have preached here many times, fatty food is good stuff and is required for health, vigor, and mental functioning.
Everyone knows what healthy eating is and what junk food is. The problem we don't seem to understand is that everyone knows this but most don't agree. There are a number of diets (mediterranean, DASH, Mayo, etc.) or diet based belief systems (vegetarian, vegan, Paleo, etc) all having their supporters and heavily annotated books and studies to back them up. Our biases are made up of childhood likes and dislikes, parental choices, books we read, Doctors on TV and people who claim to be doctors of something and dribs and drabs of knowledge/propaganda we picked up over our lifetime. Then add in a very large dose of wishfull thinking (as in if you eat this diet you will live to 100 and never have heart disease). Mayor Bloomberg, Dr. Oz, Jamie Oliver, Michelle Obama and others are just the tip of the diet guru iceberg. The complexity of the science of food, the human DNA and diseases that confound conventional diet wisdom only serve to make the waters muddier and easier for the snake oil salemen to ply the diet confusion for easy marks. Where is the truth?
