Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, November 25. 2008Rangel Watch, plus my free piece of Pumpkin PieTax-The-Rich Charlie Rangel will, no doubt, be protected from his behavior, despite daily revelations of his seemingly sociopathic and highly-enriching ($) career in politics. It just never ends. I have always maintained that politics is far more corrupt than business, and is an attraction to corruptable people who do not like, or can not handle, real productive work. The "public service" thing is a big sanctimonious scam and a cover-up for many feckless, sneaky and glib schmoozers who lack marketable skills (with some exceptions). But we all know that, and I do not think it is cute. (I believe that we recently read that the Clintons - not that they are ever together in the same room - are now worth $100 million bucks. Maybe Socialism works...) Does Rangel's constituency enjoy the way he gets it over on "the power"? I do not. This is the guy who writes the incomprehensible tax code which I try my best to obey and which I require my clients to obey, but who dodges the rules every chance he sees. I resent that. Charming rascal or scumbag? You tell me but, if it's OK to be that kind of socialist rascal, can I be one too? I want my free piece of that Socialist Pumpkin pie. Real work is a bummer, ain't it? It's just so hard to do, and competing with others seems so unfair because the others try so hard to get ahead. That's just not fair. The government should do something about that.

Rangel is apparently a crook, and the truth isn't in him. Like his predecessor in Congress, Adam Clayton Powell, he'll take everything that isn't nailed down, but he's not as smart as Powell, or as charming.
I agree with you, Barrister, that politics is more corrupt than business, partly because men like Rangel who would be tripped up on the business battlefield, by smarter, more goal directed, more efficient men, take refuge in the political world because most of us folks out here, busy with our own efforts at survival, don't pay enough attention to get rid of them. Look at 'Frozen Dollar Bill' Jefferson just re-elected recently in spite of being a proven grafter with $100,000 tucked away in his home freezer. Look at Ray Nagin, the do-nothing major of New Orleans, who left town 2 days before Katrina to go to Dallas with his wife and buy her a million dollar house, and who failed to have an effective evacuation plan for the city. The picture of 250 school buses sitting in a city parking lot, unused, says it all. No, it's not OK for you to be a rascal like Rangel, Barrister, and you couldn't be anyway. You're too honest, too much of an achiever, to ever steal from others. Marianne "I want my piece of that Socialist pie."
Someone has to grow, process, exchange and cook the ingredients before it's pie. You know who that is... I have worked in both bidness and politricks on several levels for long enough to know that, of the two, business is the much more honorable profession. That is to say, politics has the potential to corrupt even the most honest man quicker than business.
Humble, honest, caring and sincerely patriotic individuals tend to make lousy candidates. Ruthless, arrogant, opportunistic charlatans tend to be very good at the game of politics. Their mercenary, sycophantic, idolizing hangers-on will do anything to get their candidate elected. Anything. I know this. It is rare that a race is won with the utmost attention to honest and above-board tactics. And only the most arrogant will continue after initial defeats, until they win something. And even the most humble victor will have a challenge remaining humble after the inevitable re-election. Naturally, there are exceptions to this rule, but they are very few and even farther between. History is not always kind to them. In can be surmised that, since George Washington, each successive presidency has declined by some measure, in either integrity, or ability, or character, or a combination thereof, until we have reached our present nadir. And it has always been thus in the House and Senate. Local politics is only marginally better, owing to the fact that you run into these people in the local market, so they have to eventually make eye contact with you. And no one has mentioned the pols in Congress- Frank, Dodd, Obama, et al and their hack allies at Fannie/Freddie and on Wall St which brought about the meltdown. The y have yet to pay any price so far as I can see, they all were re-elected, even got their man elected President.
Where is the Fannie/Freddie investigation in Congress? Hah, surely you jest?! Never happen with the foxes in charge of the hen house. Reason enough for Republicans to win back Congress in '10 so they can begin some show trials of Rangel, Frank, et al, Obama, too if warranted. The thieves are now totally in charge- who is looking out for the taxpayers??!! And we are just beginning down the road of blatant government-abetted thievery with all of these bailouts and Obama's New Deal II. Just who do you think will be in charge of the asset liquidations, the oversight, the contracting, the budgets???? I think I may have told this joke already but just in case....kinda sums up politicians.
An elderly gentleman with three sons passes away. In his will he requeats an open casket and a viewing by each son, the lawyer, the doctor, and the politician. Upon viewing each is to deposit $2000 into the casket. The eldest son, the lawyer, begins. He pays his respects and deposits $2000 in $100 bills. The doctor follows and does likewise, but with fifties. Finally the politician son pays his respects, pulls out an ink pen, writes a check for $6000 and takes the $4000 already in the casket in change. Does it ring true? Each elected official takes an oath to preserve, protect, and defend .........
Well, will someone tell me which part of the Constitution is in jeopardy if GM, AIG, or any other entire sector of our economy goes sour? Would we suffer? Yes. Would it be good for us? No But as of this writing, according to Dr. Thomas Sowell national output has declined by less than one-half of one percent. In fact, it may not have declined even that much-- or at all-- when the statistics are revised later, as they very often are. We are not talking about the Great Depression, when output dropped by one-third and unemployment soared to 25 percent. The answer of course is that the Constitution is not in jeopardy but is , because of the criminal lack of oversight at Freddie and Fannie, the SEC, The FED, and two branches of government. We are placing ourselves in a position where enforcement of newly, or yet to be enacted laws could be used to curtail our civil liberties. Jefferson was right. A revolution is necessary every now and then, and we may just get one if they continue to criminally mismanage our government. Habu, in today's times I don't trust anybodies graphs figures , or numbers . They all lie. Especially the Bureau of Labor ( lying).
A guy walks into a bar. Another guy walks up to him, and says" Hey last nite I made out with your mother." The guy ignores him, and walks away. About 10 minutes later the guy comes up to him again and says "Hey last night I screwed your mother." Again, the first guy just walks away. 10 minutes go by again and the guy comes up again and says to the first guy "Last night I rear-ended your mother." Finally the first guy says to the guy who has been bothering him all night "Dad, will you go home, you're drunk" Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I hope everyone here at the farm has a great day with the people that you love. Safe travels to all. Jappy,
On the numbers and a host of other things the government is DOING TO US I don't like, so we're in the same camp. I've almost reached a point where when I hear an economist or gov't official talk I cover my ears and do the tongue thing of la-la-la-la-la. I agree, whoever you're referring to. Unless of course it is moi.
