Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, October 11. 2008Doc's Computin' Tips: AutoSizer
The program is free, home site is here. It's a quick install, and if you're running a sensitive program like ZoneAlarm, 'allow' it access to system files. If you don't like it putting an icon in the SysTray, remove it via Options. In regards to Internet Explorer, it does have one little problem. It'll open every IE window full-screen size, whereas in some cases, like an online editor popping open a small window so you can select an option, it might be a bit annoying. But, compared to the general annoyance of it opening in half-size mode, it's still a big win. Usage: First, open the program in question, then open AutoSizer, highlight the program's entry and click on the 'AutoSize' button. Make your selection from the drop-down menu and that should do it. For centering a small program, select 'Resize' then 'Center'. Take a bow, Ron, and thanks! Pic: In a blatant act of political partisanship, Doc plugs his own personal choice for president. Dear Doc,
Easy way - add -k to the command line in the shortcut. Even easier - right-click the icon and select "Properties" - you can set the screen size. Regards, Roy You're welcome, Doc.
Another killer app I use is called FuzLez Wheels of Volume. It's a lightweight freeware utility that allows you to control your computer's volume by moving the cursor to the Taskbar, and scrolling your mouse wheel. A click of the wheel will mute/unmute. A web search shows several software sites from which you can download it, but I can't personally vouch for any of them, so I won't post a link here. Sadly, the developer's website, FuzLez.com, is shut down. Roy - We're talking about Desktop icons. They don't have a size setting, like regular shortcut icons, nor could we ask people to go through that process for each individual icon, anyway, when all we're trying to avoid is having to hit the 'maximize' gadget (or double-click on the title bar) when they open in half-size mode. Also, setting IE's shortcut icon to 'Maximized' doesn't affect them.
Ron - Thankee again, and I changed your name in the post. As far as the volume changer, it sounds like a nifty tool but because I'm into video, I touch the volume as little as possible. I keep it in a pre-set condition (both Volume Control sliders at max, speaker knob turned up 'just so') so I can tell when a video is above or below standard computer audio levels. If it is, I'll 'normalize' the audio track (sets it to the standard) and then reassemble it with the video track before putting it on my site. Video is fun!* *once you know everything. :) Hey. Where are all of yesterday's juicy comments?
I know. I said: MAC. Doc is a MAC fink. :} ` Shoot, did I set that spam filter too high? I checked the "Remove all posts with vile references in them" option and blam! You said the word "M*C" and there went the post!
It's amazing Bird Dog got away with all of those "Apple" posts! (thu-dump!) Thankyew...thankyew...I'll be here all week. Try the veal. In answer to your question, it's a new post. To properly update the old post by conventional blogging rules, I would have had to strikethrough the entire post, then added the update at the bottom. Might have looked a tad weird. I'm sorry I lost your comment, though. Maggie's Farm hereby owes you one free comment. Take it away. :) haha. You're so full of little red apples, Doc. Those comments were too juicy for ya. I know. Now hang a sign around your neck that says: BITE ME.
Go APPLE. :} ` (in a desperate attempt to reach across the cultural divide and 'make friends' with one of those weirdo Mac owners, Doc reaches into his bag of tricks and...)
Hi, Meta! What keeps the doctor away? An apple! What do you give the teacher to butter her up? An apple! What caused Newton to come up with the Laws of Motion, the Theory of Gravity and the invention of Calculus? An apple! Yes, Meta, you Apple owners have got a lot to be proud of! When the vast majority of the world mocks, scorns and derides your elite cultist ways, pay them no mind! When the PC'ers in the media portray you as a bunch of slovenly, unkempt degenerates living in their parent's basement, just disregard it! When you walk in the computer store and there's this tiny 1' x 1' section of Mac stuff, be proud of this niche you've carved out! Well, gosh, that's about all the good things about Macs I can think of, Meta. I hope we're friends again. Oh, those Mac desktop icons are pretty sharp, I should mention that. And certainly that 1-button mouse helps cut down on carpal tunnel syndrome. So you've got that going for you. BTW, did I ever mention I was once a slovenly, unkempt, elite cultist degenerate like yourself? It was on an Amiga, not a Mac, but same thing. The PC'ers haughtily referred to it as a "game machine", the meanest insult available. I'd walk into a Fry's Electronics the size of Rhode Island and there'd be my 1' x 1' section of Amiga stuff. The PC'ers would pay $99 for a new hard drive, I'd pay $250. The Mac crowd at the time gave us our due respect, because they were much more computer savvy and knew what things like "24-bit" meant. At the time, a PC was 16-bit and thus could only display 16 colors on the screen. A Mac was 24-bit and could display 256 colors. That's why it was so popular with the desktop publishing crowd. An Amiga had a 32-bit system and, with a bit of background chicanery such as 'interlace' and 'copper blitter', it could display 1,096 colors. That's why it was such a good game machine. But that's all another story. Well, I'm glad we're friends again, and just let me say, if I ever mock, scorn and deride Macs in the future, please do take it personally. Thanks for understanding. :) Doc,
You are talkin' the pompitous of love. Yep - these Levis I have on are going into their third week. My University of Maryland t-shirt maybe not so long what with some of last night's Chinese on it. But I have two race cars and a truck, so that counts as a counter point to cool. Right? And.... a Logitech mouse. Yay! :) And I have deer in my back yard that shake my trees........ Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, bite me, please. :} ` "But I have two race cars and a truck, so that counts as a counter point to cool. Right?"
Well, uh, gosh, I don't know. I have a Firebird Formula with 400 horses under the hood. I was considering that the very definition of cool. :) I would be nothing without my Logitech mouse. erm....400 horses under the hood? Does that mean there are 400 horse's a$$es in the driver's area?
Wanna put those 400 horses to a test? Pink slip for pink slip? I'll even let you choose the instrument of your demise -- either my Kawasaki OR Yamaha. Back to you, Doc. :-) Race for title slips? Shore 'nuff, you're on.
Would it be okay if I picked the course? I'm sure you'll concede me that. Oh, and I'd also like to change vehicles, if you don't mind. I'd thought I'd use this, instead. Race you to Bermuda and back. :) You couldn't afford the gas it'd take to get to Bermuda and bank. ROFL

Thanks for blowing it for me, fella. I was going to take out an advance loan on my new Kawasaki to pay for it, but now she'll probably attach a lien to it. Well, I suppose I can always pawn one of the kids, and the local Korean restaurant would probably pay handsomely for my neighbor's dog. We'll see!
