Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I'm sorry and ashamed that these folks are my fellow Americans. Bad luck to 'em.
Sorry to go OT here but I think I may be sold on Google Chrome. Even this site loads quickly for me now..... sorry, but I've always dreaded visiting because you have some script or something that drags. I'm still here everyday but now I may not put it off as long......
Clearly Communist smears, lies, and disinformation tactics reborn for the 21st C. The Good Guys & Gals (their surrogates) need to throttle up from graduated response to massive retaliation a la Bombs Away LeMay and John Foster Dulles.
First, start hitting Obama on all aspects of his shady past, his undocumented youth, Wright/Ayers/Soros/MoveOn, his Chicago machine connections, and all of the other good stuff on 'Bam you can bet they've been holding in reserve for moments like this. Biden, too. You asked for it. Next, unleash those right-wing 527's and let 'em have at it on the web and on TV in the battleground states with Daily Kos, MoveOn, Soros and the bloody lot of Obama's surrogates. Those weenies will follow the script and cry "Uncle!", and then, and only then, can we get back to a more civilized campaign. Punter, my friend, you seem to be advocating a "scorched earth" policy here. I must admit I'm appalled and disgusted at the smear attacks aimed at Palin and her family, especially by the so-called feminists who, underneath it all, aren't for women's betterment and self-actualization after all, but just for their own self-actualization and betterment, and that of women who think exactly like they do. Other women don't count.
But I think the best way to deal with thrown feces is to dodge the shit and stay relentlessly on message. Your advice that the McCain campaign should hit Obama on his strangely shady past, and to research and expose his days with the Daley machine, and his relationships with Ayers/Wright/Soros et al is right on the money. From my working life in writing, editing and public relations I know that when you've got a message, you need to repeat, repeat, repeat, start over and repeat, until the public hears it so often they realize it's the truth. But I doubt that we will ever be able to lift this back into civilized campaign territory. That train has left the station. Marianne Ciao bella. Glad to see you're not crankey. A lie will travel around the world, before the truth gets out of bed. Mc Cain will win by 6 to 8 points, I've lowered my projection by a couple of points, because I figure Larson/ McLeod/ Wife, will carry a couple of states. Texas being one of them. Go easy on greenmtpunter I'm worst, I'm an eye for an eye plus a tooth type of guy. Must be the Dago in me. Hope you and the husbando are well!!
A lie will go around the world, become reported and taught as fact, and became history long before truth gets its shoelaces tied. Those who thereafter tell the truth are called kooks. So also are those who tell the truth before its time.
Samples: 1. Bush lied and we went to war. 2. Saddam did not have WMD. 3. The American military lost in Vietnam. 4. There is a wall of separation between Church and state. Marianne,
I agree with your measured and tempered response, but I don't think 'punter suggested that the McCain campaign be the authors. Obama maintains distance from the Daily Kos folks, don't forget. I wouldn't feel badly at all if the 527's, et al, stay on target, and ,as you suggest, let the campaign stay on message. The root trouble is soap opera women.
They are the sole audience for network news. You can draw them every day, news or no news, so long as there is soap opera. Regular people (this being men and the sane 60% of women) aren't interested in hard news, except for one-off events, and so cannot pay the bills for news production. So it's soap opera women or nothing. Since the news must maintain the unflagging interest of soap opera women, anything that is not in some soap opera story line doesn't make it into the news, and has no legs. No public debate can occur unless it's within a soap narrative. Rumors are just soap opera narratives. It all relates not to truth or falsity but to audience. News is a business. Its business model is at the bottom of all this, and ridicule of the audience for its product is the only possible fix. The media cannot be shamed. They're doing exactly what is appropriate for a business and are not going to change so long as their women don't tune away. Polticians just piggyback on whatever narrative will survive in this media product production. There's a huge majority that doesn't like this, but they're not organizable around a commercial product. You're not going to get them to watch city council meetings, so forget hard news. jappy ... I try to remember Machiavelli's sage advice: "never injure anyone except mortally." And I love "dagos". In my youth I was in love with an Italian baritone who would sing arias to me in the most ravishing voice. .. before ravishing me, that is.
Ahh ... those were the days. Marianne I hate to put it in crude terms, but the strategy works for two reasons.
1) Most people have s*&t for brains and have never learned to think critically. That leads directly to my second point. 2) Most people "feel" versus "think", especially if you accept point 1. The thinking that is done to protect how one feels. I can't explain Obama, the women Marianne aptly describes or some of the folks I know who support Obama. I call them "emotional thinkers". Marianne, Sarah Palin throws a monkey wrench into the world view of the so-called "feminists" you cite. To accept her, would be to destroy themselves. This is too much to stand. The intensity of the attack shows how big a threat Sarah Palin is to these folks. I am hoping a whole bunch of them "jump off the cliff" together. If this comes together, Palin could be the next President as well and many of the values that made America great could see a revival. Barrett... though emotionally, and with feeling, I agree with you. Logically, I have to say that 'revival' is an antiquated term. We have gone too far forward to go back. The best that can be done is to work with the future.
As somebody has said, "Journalism is politics by another name."
