Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The teeny-bopper campaign

We have officially termed the Obama campaign "The Teeny-bopper Campaign." (All Rights Reserved)

The money is not coming from the youthful masses, however. Rich guys in suits. Still, the question always does come up: Did the GOP lose the youth vote?

Well, for the yout', it's all about image and fashion. Grown-ups are past that nonsense. Is John McCain a cool MTV dude? I wouldn't know, but I prefer an adult - and I don't do childish dreams anymore: I try to do reality.

I thought that the youth vote is traditionally overrated. All the hoopla before the last few elections did not translate to victories for Gore or Kerry. "vote or die" What an inspiring message!

I have a teenager, and while he's not very mainstream in thought (wonder why...) here's his take on the nominees (I am paraphrasing):

Obama is "Black Frankenstein", based on his look and mannerisms. (Kerry is also Lurch or Frankenstein when he appears) In other words, worthy of SNL skits and not much else.

Hillary is only important to girls, apparently she has cooties.

McCain is a tough guy, somewhat reassuring. As long as he keeps smiling he is friendly, but crazy and mean enough to defend us.

Bear in mind I tell him all the adult secrets about power and politics. So he's predisposed to think that ALL politicians are fakers who are only after POWER/SEX/MONEY. I am not sure the other kids have parents willing to admit these things to themselves or their kids.

What Frum doesn't address is how the Republican party differentiates itself from the Democrat party in appealing to the "youth" vote.

You cannot appeal to the youths on economic issues if they are not taught economics in the first place.

What is a "sunnier" face on social issues? Abortion is good? Okay, what about the proliferation of STDs among young women?

Whacko environmentalism as sustainable public policy? Say goodbye to the U.S. economy and say hello to India and China.

Lastly, we have as a party presidential nominee a man who is roughly the age of the youths' grandparents. We had other options. I don't begrudge McCain his age. But even his own daughter said she supports Obama.
