We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Winter in New England #6: Boots and Wellies for footwear fetishists

It's the time of year when we re-link our world-famous Boots and Wellies opus as part of our series of All You Need to Know For Snow (and mud) season.


It's also a good time of year for another free advt for Sierra Trading Post. Good discount outdoor gear, plus sneakers, etc. Often, good deals on dress shoes and work shoes, too. Some folks collect knives, or guns, or knick-knacks. I collect boots because happy feet make for a happy man.


I also collect boots because, as many unhappy feet learned the hard way, your winter boot size is probably not your foot size. You will put your wool socks and maybe liner sox inside them if you plan to spend any real time in the cold.


You gotta size 'em for your socks and not for your feet, in the north.

Just bought DH a pair of Carolina work boots from them (after giving up on a fancier pair of Italian hiking boots). There was no problem at all with returns. And the new boots are great, waterproof with insulation, just the thing for the latest snow storm.

I wear LaCrosse 1200's for most of deer season. Gotta' get me some uninsulated boots for those summer dogs though. Looking at some more of the same sans Thinsulate. For just getting out there and gettin'er done I'm liken the cut of the LaCrosse Alpha Aggressive Steel Toe Boot, but the name makes me laugh. Kinda' like that Gore feller gettin' schooled by that Wolf girly on the finer points of bein' a tough'n. (I bet he's howlin' with the boys over a Pink Lady or an Appletini as I contemplate my next purchase with you fine people). Anywho, boots for sure. Mud season's a comin'.

What I need is a good in-between boot. Got the Belleville's for the warmer weather and some packers for the real cold. The winter pacs are by a fine guy in Salmon, Idaho:

Got my Aigles last year. A little pricey ($300 +/- but oh so worth it. Got the kind with the new lining and the expandable sides--perfect. Thank you BD and Barrister!

Sierra Trading Post is great, love doing business with them, but they don't carry my field boot.

For almost three years I have used the same pair of Muck Boot Muckmasters in the mid-height variation. Used them all winter, in the mud times, and basically any time this past season when it rained too much for other footwear... which was basically all year prior to the last week in August, when we kind of had summer.

Used them hard, too, the dog and I cover several miles each day in the fields, two to five hours a day every day.

Great boots and an unbeatable value. I got mine from an Amish boot and saddle shop, but someone sells them online.

For me it is just the good old 5 buckle overshoes. The boots described here just don't support my feet well enough. They always make my feet and ankles hurt. I gotta have a leather boot on.

After this discussion, I will have to make it a point to wear sandals outside in January in TX. Barefoot, for that matter.

It is more comfortable to go barefoot in the winter than in summer in TX, especially in urban areas.

Here in The Great White North (snow, not race) we call them swampers. Appropriate for wearing when the wet spring snow starts to go out and turns the yard into a swamp for a few weeks until the ground frost loosens up too.

As in "Pull on your swampers 'n come 'mit down to da gradge an' git on da snowmachine an' go down to da bar an' have a beer an' watch da' hawkey game, eh?" A regional thing I guess.
