We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Well, so much for Maggie's Farm being part of the 'reality-based community'.
I counted two flat-out lies in uber-liberal Ben Stein's screed, and at least six disingenuous half-truths.
How many did YOU guys count?
So-called "Intelligent Design" is doing exactly the same thing that the Scientologists did. They wanted a tax exemption from the IRS so they claimed they were a "religion", even though they have no god. Intelligent Design wants everybody to believe a god must have been involved -- but they don't want to call it "God". It's just some kind of blobular "intelligence" floating around out there, helping little planets along their merry way.
I have a quote and a link to add to the discussion. First, the quote, from an area on my site devoted to my former pet rats. _________________________________________
I recently picked up a new female that shows a trait I hadn't seen before. When she's in any kind of semi-precarious situation (hand, shoulder), her rear legs automatically 'pontoon' themselves by turning almost straight out from her body. Most rats will splay their legs a bit, of course, just to keep their balance, but this one is really unusual.
The Dawinian Scenario states that suddenly the big rock a bunch of rats are standing on shifts violently, throwing all of them to their death — except for the one with the 'pontoon legs' who manages to get a grip on something.
Then that sole surviving rat meets another 'pontoon' rat who survived a similar disaster twenty feet away, and so on and so on, and, a million years from today, all rats have pontoon legs.
Evolution never sleeps. _________________________________________
Or would someone like to suggest that a blobular intelligence floating around in space was responsible for the 'pontoon' experiment? I would suggest that Mother Nature was making the experiment; just doing a little test to see if 'pontoon legs' would be an improvement to this otherwise remarkable species.
As far as the link goes, it occurs to me that, of the four major theories propounded (Literal Creationism, standard Creationism, Darwinism and I.D.), none of them come close to what very well might be the answer:
That's not what I personally believe; it's just grist for the thought mill. It's hard not to believe in Darwinism when you've got a living example of it riding around on your shoulder.
ID proponents get the same treatment that global warming skeptics do – vicious, closed mined, intolerant, hostility; being smeared and marginalized or fired. These tactics show how weak the Darwinists and global warmer positions are. But, these anti-scientific bigots think they have the Holy Grail and they must NOT allow heresy to go unchallenged; and, they may lose their credibility and well paid positions if their dogmas fall.
I've developed my own theory of evolution. If you believe that you have evolved from a monkey, then you did. If you believe that a personal intelligent designer created you, then it is as you believe. It's as good a theory as Darwinian Evolution.
Dr. M , it seems your uber-intellect has gotten in the way and you totally missed the point of the movie. I think the theme of the movie is freedom to go where the science ( true science ) takes you and to not be intimidated by the Darwinian establishment.
P.S. There is a huge difference between skeptics of anthropogenic global warming thoery and ID.
The AGW skeptics have lots of rational alternatives based in sound scientific and engineering principles to explain discrepencies, inconsistances, and model weakness.
ID skeptics only have to point out that what we're debating isn't an ongoing process, but some "magic spark" set in motion eons ago ... and so how are we going to be able to verify or disprove it? Now if "adam & eve" kept popping into existance every day, you'd have a basis to engage me in a real discussion. Until then, you're just wasting my time with your own little psychological "god delusions" ... which you are welcome to have, I might add. Just so long as you keep them to yourself. If you can't hold it in, you shouldn't be surprised that some of us might think the less of you for it.
