Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Aww geez Barrister--you sure know how to set a gal's teeth on edge! Shall I count for you how many NSF grants have been awarded to women, who are UNABLE to complete the "promised" research? Shall I count for you how many times, women faculty have sat in a male faculty's classroom, only to steal his course notes, and ways of explaining a complex theory? Shall I explain to you the bias that already exists at the NSF. You can go to this website:
http://www.nsf.gov/staff/orglist.jsp Click on any link, or better yet, click on each one and see how many women have become entrenched in the administration of the NSF. Now, tell me how many proposals MUST HAVE a female name attached to the budget in order to get past the NSF gates And, while we are at it: could someone please explain to me why the UW gets more research money out of the NSF than any other school in the US. More than MIT, more than UCLA;more than Princeton; more than Cal Poly;more than UC Berkeley. What is it about this medium sized medium rated university that garners so much "research" money? Boeing? Microsoft? Vicki Hearne's answer has always seemed right to me
http://home.att.net/~rhhardin9/vickihearne.womenmath.txt Ok, I'm gonna be the skunk at the picnic.
I read the teaser, then the article. The entire time the voice inside my head is saying, "who cares about math 55 at Harvard, a school only the wealthy can attend or MIchelle Obama." I realize the eclectic nature of the site and I really really like it but this one just left me flat. Such is the nature of a site of eclectic, erudite people with unbounded interest in knowledge and mankind. Was that too skunky? I tried to be nice. Now if it had been about quark fractal string theory then I would have been all over it ...but math 55? Do they have t-shirts? The real answer is that girls only need to know how to use a measuring cup and maybe a ruler. I'd include a compasses but it's got that pointed end and no doubt a puncture wound would occur.
hey i can balance my checkbook. i sets a domino up on its side, and then balances the checkbook by moving it a little to one side or the other until it don't tilt in either drection.
Buddy you're tell'n a tell...when done you learnt to set a dunno on it side?

A Natural Blind
A blind man walks into a bar, taps the man next him, and says, "Hey, wanna hear a blonde joke?" The man says back to the blind man, "Look buddy, I'm blonde. The man behind me is a 400-pound professional wrestler and he is blonde. The bouncer is blonde. The man sitting over to your left is also blonde. Still wanna tell that blonde joke?" The blind man is silent for a moment and then says, "Nah, I wouldn't want to have to explain it five times." naked guy walks into mental hospital, receptionist says, "Come right on in, I can see your nuts."
i done figger'd sump'm like dat. ain't no way a dunno can natural by a folk be set right. i think it be grabity tugg'n.

Though the average IQ's of males and females are approximately the same, the male bell curve is flatter, and has has more representatives at both extremes. Men are, in fact, more genetically variable than females in many ways, and can be thought of as a vast evolutionary experiment carried on by women.
High-IQ societies (and no, I don't mean Mensa) are disproportionately male, and this is more pronounced the higher you go. This is particularly true of math and the physical sciences. This may be because some male brains are more damaged in areas relating to subtle social cues, and are thus better able to focus on single subjects for ungodly amounts of time. This is true in general, as women's brains have three times the connectivity between the two halves that men's do, and males are much more likely to have Asperger's. The oversimplification is that women multitask, men focus. The tribe needs both to survive. Individuals vary greatly, and the highest measured IQ does belong to a female. As to Math 55, I greatly suspect that the boys (and a few girls) down the river at MIT could handle this "hardest undergraduate math course" as could students at Caltech and a few other places. Almost anything that advertises itself as having the best of the best, when you are talking about people under 20, is FOS. Too much variability, too many bright stars that burn out, too many Mandelbrots who wander in from elsewhere with new ideas that leave others in the dust. AVI,
I read a great article about what you said. And it is the tribal thing: Men had to spend hours hunting for food and women had to tend to danger while the men were gone, take care of the babies, cook, gather food.......... It all makes sense. There was a whole lot more - super interesting. lawd a mighty winds be hard ta adjust. my cousin fixed hiz he done thowed a bag a spuds down in and when they done growed the mak'ins wuz smell proofed up.
corse he be a roto rooter life member so he know. feller cud do jes as good ta hold him a tater up agin his nose while he do his bidnis. but be hard to tar off sheets frum th sears catylog wif onliest the 1 hand free. reckon a feller cud run a strang round his ears to holt thet tater sos he cud git thet other hand back. look mighty comical tho.
We all know what happened to larry summers for putting this on the floor for discussion......do you really want to go there? I swear, I'll swoon or have the vapors if you continue in this vein!
The main fact of all this is, if there is to be 1000 new people, it takes 1000 females and one male to get it done. no further comment is needed as to why the venus and the mars brainz is different.
