Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, November 27. 2007"Liberal Fascism"Jonah Goldberg's new book, Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning, seems like a book that somebody needed to write. Sounds like the right book at the right time. Many readers of this site are well-aware of the totalitarian impulse of the Left, but I am not sure how much the general public thinks about it. However, I am not sure how much of the general public reads anything. Trackbacks

B, your dead on, on your last sentence reads, knows or cares about anything.
Jonah Goldberg is a top-flight political thinker, and whoever came up with that illo on the book cover is a genius black-humorist. And kudos to B for publicizing an urgent topic.
Damned if that ain't the perfect illo... good catch Buddy and your eye for the visual. After that you almost don't need to read the book.
And that is the fight, really... to find a way to engage the general public... to find a way to make them 'want' to be engaged and informed. What medium will do that anymore? Or maybe, what medium is left that isn't left... damn few. B,
Always good to know of new publications from an author I feel has some of the old H.L. Mencken running in his veins. He's a bit too hep for a true Mencken type dissection of the politics of our age but still I see a similarity. Perhaps age will sharpen his pen and he will classically snicker snack attack the left and severely trash them. The last paragraph of your intro is a thing of beauty. Bravo, sir. Buddy and Luther and the gang..we should finagle a dinner with the Jonah and his mother Lucianne who is easily his equal. I can't imagine two more cunningly witted observers of the American political scene.
We could also throw in Christopher Hitchens, who since his conversion after 9-11 is a gem. Yes Jeeves, cognac all around ...... Make the arrangements Habu... I'll be there. What a delightful evening that would be... hell, that could easily stretch over to 2 or 3 days... perhaps held in a snow bound Montana lodge...
"He's a bit too hep for a true Mencken type..."
Mencken was not very informed. He thought and spoke in sound bites from what little information he gleaned from associates as he never read a newspaper. Jonah's brilliance is that he can apply today's problems across the labyrinth of future possibilities with the genius of a true thinker. No matter where he ends up, he's traversed every scenario of cause and effect. Mencken understood neither. We must have read different Menchen's since many consider him one of the greatest writers in American history. He did author a book or two....The American Language is generally considered to be a must read.
The volume is absolutely indispensable for both the amateur logophile and the scholar of the English language. Sorrry but his work was not the product of sound bites, nor was he uninformed but rather exactly the opposite. You might have him confused with H.L. Wanker who attempted writing for a time but was too much of a sod to pull it off. ha ha ha
"You might have him confused with H.L. Wanker who attempted writing for a time but was too much of a sod to pull it off." Quite right, Mr. Habu. We know everyone who has put pen to paper was/is worthy of the approbation MF gives to Gagdad Bob who discovered the cosmos in case you didn't know. Mencken was a petty fat bastard. so, what's wrong with being a petty fat bastard?
As that NewsWeek editor said, the MSM is good for a 15% vote swing in any given election. No wonder the guild feels powerful--it IS powerful.
Be nice if it was halfway honest, too, and didn't vote 80% Democrat--but then that's the nut of the world's problems, right there, the left-wing American press, standing athwart all solutions to all problems, in honor of its sophomore poli-sci professor, and its need for chronic beefs to demagogue, raise new activists, and let them live the exciting black-helicopter play-Che life of the mind (when not busy enjoying the fat of the land, that is). Anyhoo the book review--scroll down an inch plus in the link--runs thru a lot of leftism & nazism associations but skips a big one--how ''green'' the Nazis were, with their nature worship and hatred of, mankind's transgressive pollution. Mankind had to be hateful in general, in order to raise up out of the messy masses the unblemished Aryan, and with blood & iron weld him--only him--to his soil. In today's fascism that Aryan is the progressive intellectual, whose mystic chords of enlightenment alone can grasp the Greater Truth behind all those tawdry little normal ordinary traditional truths that must be herded into concentration camps and systematically murdered for the greater glory of the thousand year nanny state. Damn Buddy... well said.
And thus my point re what's left that isn't left... it is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease... and those who would defeat us have perfected that noise. And have also seized the means of propagation. A major blow against those who value, good values. Yes, the left wing press, source of many if not most of our ills. Are blogs our illusion, that there may yet be a medium that is free to be. They will, they are... coming after it as well. Just you wait. Buddy,
I see a commie behind every tree, everybody knows that but darn if the MSM doesn't seem to fulfill that delusion. I think many of them are the personality type whose super-ego is constantly watching every one of the egos’ moves and punishes it with feelings of guilt, anxiety, and inferiority and most importantly directs via the subconscious level the externalized behavior that "if I can't be or find happiness, then no one around me will either" ...so they spend all their time throwing sand in the machine hoping to cause the pain they have internally ...this fulfills their ego and gratifies the id. Anyway that's what the Burma Shave sign said outside of Blackshear, Georgia. Dang Habu... Blackshear... takes me back... Granny lived not far from there, in Alma... nice country. And yeah... I think I remember reading those particular Burma-Shave signs as a young'un.
good thing Alma ain't over the line in Alabama--that'd be a worse tonguetwister than trying to say 'yellow leather yellow leather' outloud.
Buddy ,
The trick to saying the yellow leather, yellow leather outloud is the acceptance that two things are going to come into play. First you must never retraact your tongue into your mouth once the first syllable of yellow forces it to the exterior of your face. Secondly , simply accept the fact with grace that you're about to look stupid , tongue hanging out like a thirsty bluetick, while you utter yel-wo wefher, yel-wo wefher. After that the best you can hope for is that those watching will do the beer through the nose routine as they howl with laughter. If ones eatn barbeque be ready with the h'lick trick.

Hitchens is a moral liberal, civil libertarian, military leftist (the old “initiation of force” objectivist/libertarian definition, I believe)... who’s been embraced by the right.
Definitions of left and right, liberal and conservative are in such a screwed up state of flux that Republican and Democrat “leaders” can speak to their voting bases while serving virtually the same cash bases while accomplishing virtually nothing for the voter. Hopefully Goldberg can help to solidify some definitions so we know who stands for what. But something I’ve noticed is that lefties tend to be more cynical about how the rich got that way, while righties tend to be more forgiving. The rich are ruthless and devious competitors –vs- the rich are the best and brightest of the hardworking.
Personality type, culture, or personal experience? Quite a question. Different angles of answer.
There's the '7 deadly sins' to review. Also, willful absence of research can serve an emotional need. Then there's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Temperaments . Interesting. I found this one (16 temperaments, though):
http://www.personalitypage.com/political_affil.html Problem is, the most conservative types in that poll were also exact temperamental opposites (INTJ and ESFP). Maybe city slicker vs. country conservative? The whole left/right, conservative/liberal-progressive, political continuum muddleheadedness is traceable to the Hitler-Stalin pact and Barbarossa. Stalin crapped his pants when he knew he'd been hoodwinked by his ideologiacl gangster pal and needed allies among his progressive, New Deal sympaticos. Of course, they were happy to oblige since, well, they kind of liked him! (And why wouldn't they like his progressivism on steroids?)The transition occurred then. Left became right, bad became good, National Socialism became conservative, Stalinism became 'liberlism in a hurry', and common sense went out the window.
JG- Good luck with the book! I'll be buying. tom, i read somewhere--wish i could recall where--that the Italian Communist Party was tapped by USSR with specific instructions on ginning up & launching the ''far right'' meme for the Axis fascisms.
IOW it was a deliberate initiative--akin to Stalin's airbrushing freshly-interred enemies of the state completely out of the historical records. someone once said something like, in the real world people know the past but not the future, but under communism they know the future but not the past. buddy- I'm not familiar with the specifics but it makes sense. The US party, with it's progressive hangers-on, was certainly pushing that line. Stalin was many things but his insight into the personality disorders of the western left was a mark of his genius.
Hey folks thanks for the kind words. The book is going to have lots and lots of enemies when it comes out. So it's encouraging to know it will have at least a few friends too.
Best, Jonah Goldberg ''The book is going to have lots and lots of enemies''
boy i'll say. it's a center shot. the only shield will be that it is the truth. The quintessential Liberal Fascist isn't an SS storm trooper; it is a female grade school teacher with an education degree from Brown or Swarthmore.
Or a homosexual physical education instructor and varsity football coach and advisor to student police. Leag- Great imagery! I can almost imagine that character. Especially out there in Oakland. Back here as well, of course...
Reality is always, stranger than fiction.
Oakland didn't vet *It*. Marin holds that distinction. I didn't snap her picture but this gal may qualify for logrolling.
