We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Being around books all day is no guarantee of being smart or informed. I'm frequently amused at how often the staff at most book stores is ignorant of the current bestselling authors' names, let alone the greats of literature. And appreciation of good literature (or an intelligent, informed argument) is, I'd be willing to bet, inversely proportional to one's willingness to imbibe the hooey that liberals uncritically embrace...
That has not been my experience at either the small old-style bookstores or the two big-chain store I visit here.
I am amazed at the big-chain stores how often a clerk will say "well, yes, but let me ask the computer if we have one on the shelf before we walk all the way over there" if "over there" is very far away.
