We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
My daughter attends a nearby university, and half the kids from my town go to Tech. Half her friends are there. All I can think about are the parents. If I opened my door to see a couple of sad-faced policeman standing there with the news these parents are going to get, I think I might just have to die, myself. Why even try to live in a world that makes no sense.
My daughter emailed today to say everyone at her university is wearing Tech hoodies and purple and yellow - Tech's colors. All the FaceBook entries show the logos of Tech and her university together with the caption: Today, we are all Hokies.
They had a moment of silence at 2 P.M. and a vigil at 5. She said it is grim and that the professors seem to be more upset than the students.
I have a comment to respond to NJSoldier, but the comment won't take. I'll try it here, but first, I just talked to my daughter about guns on her campus. She is in justice studies (FBI) and they discussed this today. The policy at her university is a student who has a license to carry a concealed weapon may have that weapon with them at all times on campus EXCEPT in the classrooms. I asked her how many kids carried and she said a lot and mentioned that one girl showed her gun in class and pronounced that she never goes anywhere without it.
I forgot to ask if her university is signed as a Gun-Free Zone. I can look it up.
