Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Tuesday, February 27. 2007Instant Carbon Neutrality: From a bad person to a good one for less than the price of a pack of Marlboro Lites (plus a minor rant about elitism)"As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs." That was the famous marketing quote for the sale of Papal indulgences to which Martin Luther took strong exception in 1517. Ever wonder how Al Gore with his three houses and SUVs, and Suzuki with his mega-bus, and Hollywood, etc. claim to be "carbon neutral"? Exactly the same way indulgences worked. Here's how. One quote:
As quoted by Gore's office yesterday:
Another alternative for no footprints: Make yourself a helium-brained airhead and just float over the landscape without your feet touching. Instapundit found this Stalinist-sounding defence of Gore's hypocrisy, which truly gives me the creeps:
With him in it, no doubt. Would somebody remind this hideous un-American creep that, when searching for elites, the last place anyone would search is amongst politicians. They are the least-respected profession in America, and should be. You want an American Elite, Mr. Smarty-Pants who probably thinks he is elite himself? Try my plumbing, heating, and A/C guy Greg. He is honest, direct, gives sound advice; is smart, skilled, takes my calls, is overly-humble, and efficient - and has never overcharged me. More often, undercharges me, I think. Is God-fearing and God-loving, with a charming young family who understand that he needs to make house calls on Sunday night. And who quotes Shakespeare, and sometimes Milton. That is the American elite, my poor misguided friend: the people, and the government is our servant. Servant. Don't misunderestimate the wisdom of the regular folks, because being in real life can be worth a million-dollar education, especially if you have a curious mind and can learn from experience. Image: Al Gore owns three homes. This is a recent photo of his carbon-neutral home, in the Belle Mead neighborhood of Nashville. Comments

O/T We need this like a hole in the head.
Pelosi Hires Soros' Right-Hand Man By John Perazzo FrontPageMagazine.com | February 27, 2007 One can learn a great deal about the values and core beliefs of a political figure by taking note of the people he or she assigns to key government posts. Consider, for instance, what we can learn about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the basis of her February 8th appointment of Joseph Onek to be her Senior Counsel. “This is a critical time for the Congress and the country,” Onek said following his appointment, “and I thank the Speaker for the opportunity to return to government service and work on behalf of the American people.” (more) http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=27115 So if we're in a worldwide battle against Global Warming, does the ability to buy offsets make it a rich man's war/poor man's fight? Thoughts?
This seems apropos today.
In 1929 a young reported asked J.P.Morgan what he thought of the "crash" J.P. responded.."Markets fluctuate" also, there should be some great bargains on sale ...if a company has good basics but is caught up in this type of downdraft it doesn't change their fundamentals...so check out the blue light specials. Regarding the first post here about Speaker Pelosi hiring Geo. Soros' right hand man..well here's some info on him....have a barf bag handy..
Speaker Of The House Hires A George Soros Activist By Rev. Louis P. Sheldon Chairman, Traditional Values Coalition February 13, 2007 - Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has recently hired Joseph Onek to be her Senior Counsel. Most people have never heard of Onek before, but he was an operative in both the Carter and Clinton White House. While in the Carter Administration, Onek served as Deputy Counsel to Jimmy Carter. In the Clinton Administration, Onek was a deputy Associate Attorney General and was the Rule of Law Coordinator with the State Department. Onek also served as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice William Brennan and served as an Assistant Counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee. But his more recent work as a Senior Policy Analyst with the Open Society Institute (OSI) should be of deep concern to all Americans. The Open Society Institute is a creation of billionaire atheist George Soros. This virulently anti-Christian man operates what some have called a “shadow government” in America – a network of groups and radical individuals who wish to control America’s social and national security policies. Discoverthenetworks.org monitors the web of leftist organizations that seek to rule our nation. It describes this shadow government as being “conceived and organized principally by George Soros, Hillary Clinton and Harold McEwan Ickes -- all identified with the Democratic Party left.” The OSI funnels millions of dollars into various leftist causes, including euthanasia, open borders, abortion, homosexual activism, marijuana legalization, the undermining of our nation’s war on terrorism and other neo-Marxist visions of social justice. A list of OSI’s grantees (posted on the “discoverthenetworks.org” web site) reads like a phone book of every anti-American, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual group in America. Soros has a warped vision for America, and he’s pouring millions of dollars into public policy organizations that will push his agendas. He is also pouring money into elections. He spent $26 million to defeat Bush in 2004. Today, Soros has decided that Senator Barack Obama should be our next president and has anointed him for that purpose. He will provide Obama with funding plus whatever publicity he can generate for the senator through his various front groups. Soros either funds or operates a whole range of such organizations, but the Open Society Institute is his flagship organization. The current president of OSI is Aryeh Neier, who as director of the socialist League for Industrial Democracy, founded the radical Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) back in 1959. OSI’s Director of U.S. Advocacy is Morton Halperin, a man who has devoted his entire life to subverting America’s intelligence efforts to fight domestic and international threats. Halperin is a former Carter and Clinton official who has consistently attacked the work of the CIA. George Soros must be pleased to have one of his operatives a heartbeat away from Speaker of the House Pelosi. Did Onek get his job with Pelosi through the influence of Soros? Was Onek placed in her office to direct policy decisions? What role does Onek play in Soros’ shadow government? But, more to the point: What role does Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi play in George Soros’ shadow government? Americans deserve answers to these questions. "Soros has a warped vision for America...."
Soros has a warped vision of human beings, of history, of life itself. His sense of morality and ethics would give "Old Nick" a run for the money. I don't understand, however, that if my ex-Park Ridge neighbor Hillary is part of this shadow government of Soros, why is Soros supporting Wonderfellow B. Hussein Obama, the posterpersyn for Indonesian-Causcasian Africans? These are the people that the great Horowitz calls "the deep swimmers of the Left."
My apologies for so many posts.
This needs to be said for my own psychology, but with people like Geo. Soros on the inside and the Islams on the outside the Christians of this country and of the world need to keep faith and resolution that ours is the way. H:
Post at will. Love the links. Need 'em. Where's our pal Buddy? In a snowdrift in TX? I agree that offsets have a whiff of papal indulgences, and that there is a certain rich man's/poor man's fight about the whole business. Gwynnie is absolutely on-target when she says that we shouldn't confuse what makes one a member of a decent elite, and a politician. Gore was Vice-resident for eight years (and a pally-wally with the President Vice-President at that) and I don't recall him doing more than writing a silly little book about the envriroment and making money speaking about same. He and his administration didn't actually do anything about climate change, because to propose what he is proposing now would be suicide for any sitting administration. One thing he talked about even more, and in much tougher language, was Iraq. He was Mr. Baddass Hawk about Sadaam and Iraq in those days, and his speeches from that time could have been delivered verbatim by Bush in 2002/2003. Gore might even had invaded Iraq himself if he had been given the opportunity (Then Bush and Co. could have been opposed to the war, and so it goes), but once out of power, he opposed the war. Hence our contempt for politicians - we never feel they are doing what is right for either us or our country, but only for their political party. To see the Democrats screwing around with our efforts in Iraq is freakin' terrifying (though perhaps if they were back in power they would sober up) and will come back to haunt them.
Yeah, I'll be following Gore's plan as soon as he reduces his yearly energy consumption down to an average American users. I don't think using nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average--is the way to convince people about the sincerity of your position!
I haven't seen him. One day on Belmont Club...I think he's a good deal like all of us..sometimes you just need a break from the news.
I think (not being a site ownera) that it is good to encourage people who read the blog to also let their feelings be known, participate. If you like a blog it's probably because you enjoy the content and the contributors, or at minimum some of them. An while I can't speak for this or any site I know I can learn things from people and I can learn things about myself. A contributor may have had an experience, relate it to us and cause a change in someones life because it triggered a questioning or desire for more knowledge ona topic. I know Buddy Larsen, for my money, is one of the best around. He is sometimes sugically precise in his staement or observation. Succinct but very profound. When he feels like giving the keyboard a real workout the knowledge and insight he relates will cause me to think about something for a long time.....his style is great, whereas I have a strong, too strong affinity to blast too hard. That's the learning about yourself part. In person I'm not that way....but Mr. Larsen is A-OK in spades. I hope to actually meet him one day. I wondered how the Goracle is able to run up such huge electric bills. He must air-condition the whole neighborhood until it's cold enough to build igloos in the summer.
Thanks for the thoughts on the o/t and on/t subjects.
I suspect all of Al's a/c is designed to cool Tennessee to the right temperature for his farm's tobacco crop. Gwynnie, that is two in a row you have nailed. Hil's contempt and Goracle's sanctimonious and hypocritical arrogance. Both should be front page in some aging media's print edition. But, alas, will not be.
Soros is a bastard. A determined enemy. And very smart and clever. And, unfortunately, a force to be reckoned with. He works the plebes (of which I am one) in a most efficient manner. What does it take for his message too be refuted. Is it sheer money, no. Is it sheer message, no. Is it something that makes a near majority united, yes. How will that be turned around? Soros works all the angles, he advances his message in many ways. He has willing sycophant's. What is there that the sane side can do? Our words here make us feel good, but what is the next step? Is there anything more that can be done? Working local is good, of course. But it is a years long effort. What else, letters to the legislature, yeah sure. Perhaps I am cynical, I just do not see past methods working. And, BTW, I am not hankering for a netroots type of event. I'm just asking, how the hell do we turn this around? BL is OK and over at another site. He is not comfortable with too much attention. Which I always give him, because he deserves it. Hey I would LOVE to live in an igloo. Really, I think I would be right at home. Albore is once again bloviating out hot cow steam, creating more global wOrming problems with all the CO2 that comes out his mouth. Did you notice the green cloud over his mansion (s)???
Gwynnie, please forgive, not two in a row, but three. The 'Hil and Panther' would also be front page, in a world with true values. Alas, there are none out there. Maybe there never has been.
Thanks Gwynnie. I like this one!
Luther, just keep dogging em. I do not know if things can be turned around but these lefties have to be cornered and the lights turned on them. IMO their idealogies do not stand up in free debate. Which is why I do not think that Algore will run in 08'. He can spout all he wants now and not have to take the hard questions. These next few years should be interesting. And say hi to Buddy. I think Buddy is very smart and he has a really nice style that adds charm and grace to the internet, not an easy thing to do and he is obviously missed here already. I do not visit too many other sites, (so many good ones) so I too am hoping he drops back in here every now and again. When, and if, our corner of the blogosphere enters the mainstream, we can all retire from this avocation. Until then, all we can do is to talk to cyberspace, and hope somebody hears.
Yes, maybe we need to raise Buddy's pay to get him back! We would gladly double it. Thanks Patina; just having one of my periodic periods of pessimism. I'll perk up presently.
BD - You would think there would be someone out there smart enough too listen to you folks. Let's hope. Here's an interesting site about old and unusual maps. I'm thinking of moving to the "Republic of West Florida." http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/ HT - AoS Just whipped this up thought it might look nice on a car.

Just a note to highlight that the dude Gwynnie ranted about here yesterday was indeed the esteemed commentator and fascist-in-training Eric Alterman, about whom the truly admired Ms. Althouse had a few words, today.I do not know this Alterman guy from Ada

Iowahawk has a plan to save Gaia. It's about carbon credits, natch. Good timing for Iowahawk's piece, as we learn today that the Rev. Al buys his carbon credits from himself! We told ya that he doesn't believe his own BS. Just another political con man,
