We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Why is the Ruffed Grouse the king of game birds?

Is the New England Subspecies of Ruffed Grouse the King of Game Birds?


Of course it is debatable, but I think so. Partridges are difficult to find, you need a good dog, and you usually need the magic cartouches that can shoot through trees. 


The old expression is that these birds are hunted with legs.

In my early teen years just before the 1960s my brother and I hunted partridge in the aspen wood near our home in upstate NY. My brother with his 20ga model 12 and I with my 20ga Stevens SxS. Our border collie always came along but she wasn't much of a bird dog. I shot quite a few trees but never got a partridge. As I think back I'm glad I didn't, but I love the memories of my brother and our dog.

The first bird I ever took was a ruffed grouse, in the early 80s. I used to get as many as six a season in Massachusetts. Haven't seen one since 2002. The opinion seems to be loss of habitat. Shooting stocked pheasant is not nearly the challenge.

I will always remember the cold, clear day after deer season that I solo hunted a large wood lot in Northern Columbia County in NY. I left the house with a box of number 6s for my 16 ga Mossberg pump. I went home when I ran out of ammo and had not one bird to show for it. But what a great day it was.

It was 1952, I was 4 years old and riding shotgun in my Dad's Studebaker pickup. We were on the Mosinee Grade--an abandoned logging railroad line --in Michigan's UP. The truck stopped, my Dad got out and BANG! One shot from the single shot 16 ga. I jumped out of the truck and ran into the ditch and picked up my first partridge. I'm 74 now and remember it like it was yesterday. I've still got the 16 but not my Dad, and I'm still making memories.

Slightly related - made my annual trip out West to see the fall foliage. An eagle - an actual eagle - flew over me as I was on the Mohawk Trail Bridge.

Speaking of an eagle our national symbol, In Kahn's London yesterday the 12 police arrested a native born Englishman for carrying the British flag during the violent pro-Palestinian riot. None of the violent Muslim immigrants that were attacking people were arrested though. THIS is what the elite want for America. We just need more violent immigrants and Biden is taking care of that. So one day soon YOU could be arrested for carrying an American flag while illegal immigrants from shit hole countries destroy your city. Is this a great country or what?

I married into a family that considered the first day of quail season a merged family reunion and a holy day. My father-in-law once quit a job because his boss wouldn't let him have the day off to go quail hunting.

My husband says quail hunting is the most civilized kind of hunting. You don't have to be on location before the sun comes up. You can have a generous breakfast at your Grandmother's table, and then go out into the cold, with extra biscuits in your pocket for you and your dog (preferably a pointer).
