Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Summer Reading: Cormac McCarthy, brutal but brilliant

The harshness and hope of an American master



 However shocking it may sound, Child of God is not only among McCarthy’s best novels, it is one of his most poetically concise and beautiful ones as well. I do not think it farfetched to imagine that McCarthy means to suggest the ability of art to conquer insanity and evil by raising them to a higher level, or power.

All The Pretty Horses and The Road are the only McCarthy novels I've read. They were full of beautiful and horrifying imagery, and were bleak indeed (especially The Road, but they deserve to be considered great literature. That said, I've reached the age where I prefer optimistic escapism, because regular life has itself become rather bleak.

I highly recommend Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West, as well.

Scott Adams says when he is watching a movie and they tie someone to a chair he turns it off. I haven't read this novel. But if everyone is describing it as bleak and horrific I've been there and done that. I prefer to confront and illuminate my own dark corners instead of traipsing around in somebody else's.
