Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Scientists recreated classic origin-of-life experiment and made a new discovery

Isn't that supposed to be spelled "Time Masheen"? Oh well. It's an interesting idea about checking software reliability. Zoomers ain't Boomers. Sorry to break it to dullard Millennials who think Zoomers are going to help them smother Boomers with a pillow, but Zoomers don't like Millennials much, either.

Sorry to break it to dullard Millennials who think Zoomers are going to help them smother Boomers with a pillow, but Zoomers don't like Millennials much, either.
Probably accurate. If I recall correctly the Strauss-Howe formula predicts that dominant generations like the Boomers (Prophet) and Millennials (Hero) are more likely to collaborate, and the reactive generations of Gen X (Nomad) and Zoomers/Homeland (Artist) find more compatibility. QUOTE: No, this finding supports my hypothesis that the glass was dirty. You know, with organic molecules. There's no evidence of that. The Miller-Urey experiment has been replicated many times and in many different ways. The possibility of contamination is something that anyone working in the field would be well aware of, and the contamination would be readily apparent (e.g. human proteins). On the other hand, many of your other comments are insightful. Roger de Hauteville: The spleen has taken over our minds. "Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them." — David Hume Exactly zero chemists would be surprised to hear that a certain amount of silicon dioxide dissolved into the solution. It is also well known that some reactions run differently in plastic rather than glass containers, and can even be sensitive to what manufacturer they come from, due to poorly-understood catalytic effects. None of this invalidates the interest of Miller-Urey as a model for primordial abiogenic production of organic molecules. Silicon dioxide ("sand") is one of the most common minerals on the surface of the Earth and would certainly have been present in the early environment the experiment attempts to replicate.
Hairless Joe: Exactly zero chemists would be surprised to hear that a certain amount of silicon dioxide dissolved into the solution.
Just to be clear, silicates wouldn't represent organic contaminants as suggested by the original poster. Re Setting your computer's clock back: You will probably find that you have trouble connecting to your email sever and most websites because their certificates will look wrong on your end, or yours will fail authentication at the server end.
Speaking of epic merch, when Texas A&M at San Antonio first opened, I suggested the chupacabra as their mascot.
Alas, they chose something else. Why do dogs tilt their heads? They can't believe what they're seeing. Es stupido!
I have no interest in Facebook. Just imagine what will happen when Musk opens a satellite campus on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
A dog tilts it's head to hear or see something better. But also as a "tell" to induce the object of interest to make a move.
Tucker Carlson is actually doing it. He is investigating who was behind the Jan 6 riot and the unconstitutional treatment of innocent people simply because they spoke up about the Nov 3 real insurrection. What do we know so far?
That the demonstration was invaded with left wing BLM and Antifa activists dressed in black block so that they wouldn't be identified. That the FBI placed instigators, NOT informers, but actual instigators to make sure the demonstration became a riot. That the capitol police were instructed to let the demonstrators in so that they could later be charged with trespass. That 99% of those charged with a crime did in fact do nothing wrong. Tucker better be careful. Remember Epstein didn't kill himself. Civil war is coming. https://kunstler.com/clusterfuck-nation/you-know-what-they-sayin/
Which side are you on boys, which side are you on? I'm on the side of the people who aren't playing your mental fantasy war where you get to put on camo and pretend to shoot federal employees.
Or maybe it's Just Me. I'm a Captain-Lieutenant Commodore in the Army of We The People. What's your grade, son? To the fellow on crutches who stole my camo jacket.
“You can hide, but you can’t run” H/t borepatch I’m down for the WTPeople Army by the way. Good answer Cowboy just guessed wrong about me. What if the civil war comes and I didn't mention it does that make me a better person in your mind, Son!
But spewers gotta spew so you do you. I think it will be a combination of things including runaway inflation, a crashing economy and higher taxes on the middle class. Yeah, yeah! I know it is unpatriotic to notice these things... Son! But I just can't get past the feeling that it's gonna happen and the crazy left/Democrats/socialists are doing it n purpose. You know what I mean, Son? Stop poasting drunk, kid, you can't handle your cough syrup.
Maybe its Just Me, but you're either incoherent or a paranoid conspiracy freak. It's just you!

Not sure the head in the sand approach to our problems is going to work for you. What is clear some 20 months and a stolen election after the "two weeks to slow the spread" mantra is that everything is worse. Literally hundreds of thousands of small businesses and many large businesses have gone bankrupt. 40% of Americans are having serious financial problems. Some 7 million jobs are gone. hundreds of thousands are being fired for not taking the covid vaccine. At the same time a totally insane Democrat congress and administration is dramatically increasing taxes and dramatically increasing the printing of money. Inflation is sky rocketing and Janet Yellen thinks it is now big deal and will magically stop in a few months. If you don't understand that this is a shit show and the worst is yet to come you just aren't paying attention. About 51% of the population is mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore. And the Democrats are ignoring them in their seal to push through massive Venezuelan style socialism. Do you really see anything at all on the horizon that is going to fix this shit show???
I have a suggestion for the Biden administration. Now that we know the Jan 6 riot was a false flag and those people arrested were innocent I have a suggestion: Instead of giving $450,000 to each migrant pardon these poor mistreated patriots and give them each $450,000 for the harm you caused them and give the illegals a ride back to their home country.
Smothering Zoomers with a pillow.
Ah, if we only had a time machine. RE MUSK UNIVERSITY
There will be no comprehensive lectures, but professors will touch on the high points. Since I read about this experiment in high school my question has always been this: How does an intelligent being gathering chemicals into a glass and exposing it to heat, pressure, and electricity prove that life arose without intervention by a creator?

Science doesn't deal in "proof" in the same way as mathematics. Given a theory of abiogenesis, an entailment would be that complex molecules can form spontaneously in plausible primordial conditions. Various experiments have shown that nucleic acids, amino acids, and lipids can all form under plausible primordial conditions. This supports but doesn't prove the theory. "Why do dogs tilt their heads?" What I want to know is why they shake their heads until their ears flap? Do they have an itch? Do they do it to announce their presence? Do they do it to warn other dogs?
