Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Hackers steal $130 million from Cream Finance; the company’s 3rd hack this year
People prepping for the end of the world love cryptocurrency. You know, money that only works if everything on the internet does. Good luck with that. Forget “Best” or “Sincerely,” This Email Closing Gets the Most Replies The first shall be last and the last shall be first and "Best" shall be last. Why the U.S. Navy Never Built Titanium Submarines Like Russia
Yeah, but titanium submarines sure helped the Russians beat the Afghan navy pretty quick. Anyway, the US Defense department also seems to be based solely on the "money is no object" procurement plan. Wait until we're totally soviet to find out what that really means. You won't have to wait long.
The original Flight of the Phoenix was a great movie. The remake, not so much. China limits construction of 'super high-rise buildings'
That's the 21st century in a nutshell. The Great Competition to Give Away Money
The headline describes venture capital investment as "giving away money." That's the 21st century in a nutshell. Why The Metaverse will be Bigger than Facebook and Google Combined
I'm sure guaranteed basic income and phony empty box refund claims from Amazon will make this wonderful new world possible. Solid-State Batteries Rev Up Electric Cars, Boost Grid Storage
Not really a battery per se. It's a (super)capacitor. Supercapacitors are the only thing that will make electric cars really viable. They'll figure it out eventually, and think of all the money you can make running a superfund recycling site for Tesla batteries when they do.
I once heard someone whose medical coverage didn't cover dental work describe teeth as "luxury bones." Home Values Soared in 2020 -- but So Did Property Taxes
I'm sure towns and cities will use this extra money wisely, by investing in the additional police officers needed to arrest all the citizens who attend school board meetings, for instance. That's truly the Christmas spirit, isn't it? I suggest Germans follow Groucho Marx's advice in these matters: Don't join any group willing to have you as a member. Have a great Tuesday, everyone! Best, Roger. Oops

Property values in my small county dropped 25% after a 2017 hurricane. That year we raised the tax rate to keep the revenues level. Since then we've gradually reduced the tax rate as the property values recovered. Our reserves, reasonably strong before the storm, recovered and increased, so this year we gave a delayed cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) raise to all county employees. I wanted to limit it to the Sheriff's Department, which was having trouble recruiting and retaining staff, but the compromise was to extend it to all county employees, but to use some of the excess reserves to pay for it, while lowering the tax rate to counteract 100% of the increase in property valuations.
Our property taxes are quite high, not because the county rates are so high but because of Texas's nutso school tax system. Over half the taxes we pay here go to the school system. Under our "Robin Hood" rules, much of that gets sucked out of the county and used by the state, even though our school-age population is rather poor. It's what happens in a county split between comfortable retirees or vacation-home owners vs. locals, with almost no industrial tax base (all tourism). I can't imagine Germany setting aside certain people as pariahs and vermin without the same rights as the decent people in society could ever have any bad repercussions.
I’m sure you’ve seen the meme: The time change is coming, be sure to set your clocks back to 1939!
It beats me why humanity is so obsessed with centralized power. Give me some big government, please! Life is so much better with the FBI looking over my every move. Facebook and Twitter correcting my impure thoughts. The gulag ain’t so bad. The food and sleeping conditions are a bit lacking, but hey, freedom is for the deplorables. The irredeemables. There must be some hope for me, it’s why they locked me in this jail, right? Tyranny today. Tyranny tomorrow. Tyranny forever! Yea! Utopia is here. Jerryskids: I can't imagine Germany setting aside certain people as pariahs and vermin without the same rights as the decent people in society could ever have any bad repercussions.
Yeah. They don't only discriminate against muggers and murderers, but they actually segregate them into confined areas. (You are conflating ethnic and religious discrimination with valid attempts to control contagious disease. In this case, the person being excluded has the keys to their exclusion in their own hands.) You're conflating valid attempts to contain a virus (still at 99% survival rate) with tyranny.
There is a better way. QUOTE: Tallahassee, Fla. – As a result of Governor Ron DeSantis’ leadership and our data-driven approach free of mandates, the State of Florida has one of the lowest COVID-19 daily average case rates in the last 7 days per 100,000 residents in the United States. Hackers steal $130 million from Cream Finance; the company’s 3rd hack this year: Soooooo, Cream Finance got creamed?
Re Harvey Kruger would approve. Boeing should hire that guy post haste to fix their 787 quality problems. He knows how to make stuff, which none of the financial weenies in Boeing's headquarters have a clue about.
And just like that! Damaging statues became a crime!

It's been a crime, e.g. https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/four-men-charged-federal-court-attempting-tear-down-statue-andrew-jackson-lafayette No worries. The George Floyd statue is a perfect statue to represent African Americans. He was a thief, a rapist, used a gun illegally to rob people in a home invasion, beat a women, fraudulently abused welfare and took a deadly cocktail of drugs which killed him and other African Americans successfully blamed that death on the police. Perfect! example of an African American today. Please keep the statue up and put the Trayvon statue right next to it since they were both criminals and so perfectly represent their race.
zakly correct. 2 perfect examples of the violation of:"Thou shalt have no other Gods before me". Hell-bound trains await.
Ooh, Metaverse! The ultimate rabbit hole for anti-social geeks and their loser fanboys to dive down, never to return. More real-world goodies (like hot chicks! vintage wines! steaks!) for the rest of us. I call that a future win-win.
