We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
This was predictable. As men have greater genetic variation than men, the upper and lower tails of the IQ scale have more males. Women dominate the middle. (The joke was "Men are a genetic breeding program carried on by women." Mostly true." Some ethnic and racial groups score higher on g-factor intelligence as well, so astrophysics has long been dominated by Jews and northern Europeans. More recently, Northeast Asians and the supper castes of India have become prominent as well, for the same reasons.
Therefore, as a field that requires an enormous amount of IQ at entry level, it was chockablock full of the wrong people. There has been no mercy shown, however, for the disability rights of the high percentage of ASD in the group. Along with abandonment of persecuted women who don't qualify as Western elites, the viciousness displayed toward the Aspergery men is instructive.
I don't think there is any way this survives in the West beyond a few more decades. China and India will become the center. What could go wrong?

You are correct about the male-female IQ spread of the bell curve. There are more male idiots and more male geniuses. With regard to geographic distribution: India, no. (Eastern) China and Japan, yes.
Man, typos. Mea maxima culpa. I am supposed to be making dinner and was hurrying. Please be kind and insert the "end parentheses" and take the "s" off of supper. Whew.

So far we've had the strike (some participated), the Particles for Justice letter (I haven't had the heart to look to see who signed), but I haven't heard of enough faculty turnover (and department growth isn't happening) to see if wokeness has hit hiring.
It's time Elon Musk put earth based astronomy out of business. Small telescopes on 30,000 Starlink satellites would turn astronomy into a big data problem and provide much better asteroid early warning to boot. For anyone wanting a really big telescope, he can have Starship put one on the far side of the moon by the middle of the decade. The information would be better and the silliness would stop.
